What would you think if this was your cafe?

I was so embarrassed today! DP thinks it's fine but I don't! He thinks it was ok as we ordered more drinks.

So, today my DP and I went to a cafe with my DMIL and DP's nephew. We all ordered a drink. DP has finished his drink then ordered another. DN finished his drink and said he was going to get a drink from the bakery next door and asked if anyone wanted anything. DMIL said she'd have a tea. So DN got them and they both sat at the café drinking their drinks from next door! DP was still drinking his drink and as I'd finished my drink I ordered another too. I felt so embarrassed. But hoped the fact DP and I still had drinks from the cafe counted for something!

There were other tables free and all are the same size, but I still don't think it's on! Should I apologise next time we go in? We go in there regularly!

That's really rude

OwlBasket · 08/08/2022 19:25

Gosh. I’m surprised he wasn’t asked to leave.

FindingANewLifePlan · 08/08/2022 19:26

Yeah, very rude!

No. It really didn't. Can't believe you're trying to put a positive spin on this.

Seriously rude. A lot of places say you can only consume food and drink bought there. I can’t believe nothing was said to DN that it was inappropriate

Poppyseed14 · 08/08/2022 19:28

I'd have been mortified OP. Bit cheeky. Reminds me a bit of a time I was in a Nandos and a family came in. 2 adults and I think 3 or 4 kids. All the kids had KFC with them. They not only ate it but also helped themselves to the free refills. They were really rough looking so nobody said a word.

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 19:29

I would have asked them to leave.

TwoMonthsOff · 08/08/2022 19:31

is it just me that’s Confused why didn’t they get drinks from the premises they were in 🤔

FawnFrenchieMum · 08/08/2022 19:39

Whilst it’s not something I’d personally do, having bought six drinks in the cafe, I’m not sure it’s as awful as everyone is making out.

Was the drink DN wanted something they didn’t sell? Getting a tea from next door is weird though!

PuttingDownRoots · 08/08/2022 19:42

Thats really wierd.

We have a lovely independent cafe locally. They have regular trouble with college students buying takeaway coffee and snacks from the convenience shop next door and using their outdoor seating.

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 19:44

It is as awful as people are making out. If it was my cafe I would have told them to leave.

thefizz · 08/08/2022 19:49

Had they run out of tea and drinks in the place you were in?

Something odd about using a different premises, can you explain why OP?

1FootInTheRave · 08/08/2022 19:51

They are disgustingly rude.

MoodyTwo · 08/08/2022 19:53

I think it depends on the reason why they didn't drink the cafe tea ... if they had ran out I can't see a problem...

Any other reason and it was rude ... it's like when mothers pull out a drink for a child , when the place does squash and fruit shoots

Floralnomad · 08/08/2022 19:56

Very rude . If it were my cafe I’d have asked the MIL and nephew to leave .

bellac11 · 08/08/2022 19:59

Why did the mother in law ask him to get tea, surely the cafe did tea?

Didnt anyone say to your nephew 'you need to order the drinks from here, you cant bring drinks from elsewhere'

At the end of the day he is responsible for himself, its not your fault.

I think people these days dont really know the etiquette of things.

lunar1 · 08/08/2022 20:01

I'd have left if I was with them, absolutely no way would I sit there while they did that. I'd be mortified!

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/08/2022 20:03

If it was a regular every day occurrence I’d probably say something but I wouldn’t have bothered if it was just a one off.

Blinkingheckythump · 08/08/2022 20:05

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it was cheaper from the bakery?

I've sometimes ordered a drink and meal somewhere and when finished the drink had a mouthful or two of the bottle of drink I had on me, I wouldn't buy a drink if I only wanted a mouthful. But I wouldn't dare go get a drink somewhere and bring it back to the first place

nomistake · 08/08/2022 20:06

Why did they need to get drinks from the place next door?

FictionalCharacter · 08/08/2022 20:06

One of you should have told the nephew that it’s not OK to buy a drink somewhere else and then sit drinking it in the café.
Did your MIL realise he was going to get the tea from next door?
I don’t think I’d apologise when you go back, the cafe owner might not even remember, but I’d tell the nephew not to do it again.

It doesn't matter whether they fancied something the cafe didn't sell or not!
Honestly!

TwoMonthsOff · 08/08/2022 20:07

@Blinkingheckythump
I agree….probably saved a massive 45p !

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 20:08

A cafe is a business. Not somewhere to provide seating and facilities for someone buying a drink from elsewhere.
