Dd dad walked out on us in January. We are both doing well.

dd now wants a tv in her room, but I feel like she is a bit too young to be in her room all the time. i often give her free reign of the living room and tv and go to my room to watch tv

Aibu? At what age did you child have a tv in their room?

for context Dd has a phone and gaming platforms which she is allowed in her room

@StreetwiseHercules I didn't say watching TV causes ADHD but that it can be related to symptoms associated with ADHD, like attentional problems and impulsivity. This view is reinforced by findings showing that changes to the frontal cortex are associated with excessive screen time - a brain area implicated in cognitive and behavioural control issues.

As for crime rates declining, have you been to London recently? Young men mindlessly and viciously stabbing each other over absolutely nothing. It's so bad the Metropolitan Police have lost control.

Children will imitate what they see on TV and become desensitised to the violence in something like Squid Games. The problem certainly isn't confined to TV watching, as another poster said, that's now being replaced by more modern technology.

Love what Roald Dahl wrote in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

'They sit and stare and stare and sit
Until they're hypnotised by it,
Until they're absolutely drunk
With all that shocking ghastly junk.
Oh yes, we know it keeps them still,
They don't climb out the window sill,
They never fight or kick or punch,
They leave you free to cook the lunch
And wash the dishes in the sink -
But did you ever stop to think,
To wonder just exactly what
This does to your beloved tot?
It rots the senses in the head!
It kills imagination dead!
It clogs and clutters up the mind!
It makes a child so dull and blind
He can no longer understand
A fantasy, a fairyland!
His brain becomes as soft as cheese!
His powers of thinking rust and freeze!
He cannot think - he only sees!'

Have you actually read these studies?

'So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in it's place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall...
...They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something good to read.'

There's also lots of evidence that too much screen time is bad for eyes, but more so for children as they're still developing. Specsavers say:

"Digital eye strain is a very common condition that occurs from prolonged screen time. Spending too much time focusing on digital devices means your child's eyes may become fatigued and sitting too close to screens can also strain their eye muscles. Light glare reflecting on digital screens can also make this worse, causing children to strain their eyes even more...It may even contribute to the development or progression of short sight (myopia)."

Yes. Nobody's saying there's a definitive answer, but there are lots of indications that warrant research.

Add that to what is seen in schools.

Add that to trends that are seen.

StreetwiseHercules · 09/08/2022 12:36

They would say that, wouldn’t they? What a load of nonsense.

@SnowdropsInSpring There's no helping some people.

Well, with the Roald Dahl quotes - DD1 is also the absolutely biggest bookworm going who can get through umpteen books in a day and has been down at the library most days this holiday since I started letting her go there alone... so I don't think the TV in the bedroom's impacted that much.

I have tried to explain that the summer reading challenge at the library is NOT to try to read the entire library over the summer!

@CoffeeWithCheese Well done, you are clearly not my target audience.
