Smoking in outdoor dining areas should be banned - AIBU?

Sat outside a lovely cafe by the canal in the sun, lovely except for the wafting of some ladies cigarette smoke across the table. i probably am a bit unreasonable but I just hate smoke when eating. Seems a shame that to enjoy outdoor dining I need to suffer smokers second hand smoke. So...

YABU - Suck that second hand smoke up
YANBU - There should be no smoking where food is being enjoyed outdoors

It's common decency not to smoke around people who are eating, but saying that they probably think because they're outside it doesn't affect anyone.
I'm an ex smoker and can walk past someone now and if they're smokers I can smell it. I can't believe I used to smell like that, so I do feel for people that have never smoked.

I wish it was banned in public spaces. On Sunday we were having lunch out and sat on the terrace area. Our food had just arrived when 2 men sat at the table next to us and immediately started chain smoking. The restaurant was full so we couldn’t move. We ended up leaving most of our food and just going as it was disgusting.

Doorways are also horrible. Especially people blowing vape smoke right in your face.

I think smoking outside the home and dedicated smoking shelters should probably be banned at this point.

That’s never going to happen while this is the case:

total tobacco tax receipts for the last complete financial year, 2021 to 2022, were £10,277 million, which is £313 million (3.1%) higher than the previous financial year

ChampagneCharlieIsMyName · 08/08/2022 18:49

I’m not a smoker, but I’m in no position to tell, others how they should live.
that’s it!
what makes you think you are so far superior that you can tell others how they live?

Sometimeswinning · 08/08/2022 18:50

I hate dogs around food. Can we ban them in public spaces? Worst thing ever is when I'm having a picnic and one comes over!!

Moonshine5 · 08/08/2022 18:53

I don't smoke and I completely respect the reasons and understand why bans are in place; however we live in a free country and smokers are outside all the time just because it's BBQ weather and non smokers want to eat outside. I think smokers should be considerate but not banned.

Bonjovispjs · 08/08/2022 18:56

Smoking is the reason I never sit outside pubs/restaurants anymore which I used to love to do, it's so gross having to breathe in that filth, I actually have to hold my breath when I walk past someone smoking, it's that vile🤮

Florenz · 08/08/2022 19:00

Do they what they've done in New Zealand where anyone born after 2008 is banned from smoking.

Presumably you’d be happy with your income tax going up to replace the lost revenue?

So for the 3 weeks decent weather you get in the Summer you want to ban smoking in the smoking areas of pubs and restaurants because it suits you to sit outside, but the rest of the year whether it is lashing rain, snowing or minus five degrees outside you are ok with smokers standing outside in the same area because it doesn't affect you. This conversation comes up every year about this time - once there is a bit of decent weather.

lamest argument ever 🙄

Blossomtoes · 08/08/2022 19:10

True though.

vegang · 08/08/2022 19:12

YANBU - was out for lunch today with my 15 month old asleep in the pram, sat outside and a man sat right next to me lit a cigarette and where he was holding his cigarette smoke went right into DDs pram and there was nowhere to move so I had to leave, so gross

SexyLittleNosferatu · 08/08/2022 12:24

You are unreasonable. Smokers have already been forced outside in all weathers. You aren't coming to any harm for the 60 minutes or whatever that you are sat there, you just don't like the smell which to be honest is tough.

😂no they haven't. They choose to go outside in all weather's. No harm will come to them if they didn't smoke for the 60 minutes or whatever they are sat there.

And I can't tell you the amount of nice meals out I've had ruined by people's screaming / puking / snotty faced kids. Can we ban them while we're at it? Wink

In doorways too. You often have to walk through a plume of smoke to enter say a shopping centre or high street shop. Also people walking along pavements while smoking - usually cigarette held down at toddler eye level when not in their mouth. Smoke speaking along the length of the path.

Smoking in doorways is banned as part of the indoor smoking ban

Fimofriend · 08/08/2022 19:22

YANBU, It is practically impossible for people with asthma to eat in a pub garden. Why do the smokers always spread out? They could sit in the same corner of the pub garden and let the rest of us have a chance to eat without their stench.
Smokers always get shocked when I say that for me eating next to a smoker or eating next to someone pooping is equally vile. But it is.

thefizz · 08/08/2022 19:24

Some of you are so far up your own arse you are coming out of your mouth.

I actually thought about adding this but as a parent to 3, 1 of which falls slightly within the category I couldn't do it!!! But yeah I'm all for this!!

Just tax alcohol a bit more.

Sunnyqueen · 08/08/2022 19:49

Yabu, it's outside in public. Don't be so precious, they have just as much right to smoke as you do not to.

Not happening, too much taxes will be lost.
