just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

It's really a shame @Trying20s thread was shut, it was doing a very good job at letting people see the Olympic level mental and verbal gymnastics some people will go to. I thought it was pretty educational and think it should have been left up for posterity.

I'm unsurprised that my (GC woman) thread was removed within 4 posts but when @Trying20 started a thread from the opposite perspective it ran to 11 pages before being shut down - clearly the ideology subscribers are a bit faster at reporting than the GC lot. It was an interesting social experiment so thanks to Trying for allowing the comparison!

Between @Trying20 repeatedly insisting that there is no clear definition of sex and that we cannot say it is impossible to change sex if we don't specify what changing sex means, and another poster insisting that "reproductive transplants are possible" but refusing to explain what they mean by that, it was gloriously bonkers.

But what do you expect when the actual government legislates to give male people the right to be female people and vice versa?

There is a pretty clear definition of sex, and sex isn't a spectrum, by any normal scientific or statistical meaning of the word.

However, race is hard to define, doesn't technically exist and is a spectrum. Yet that still doesn't mean that a white person is black - even if they cosmetically alter themselves in a convincing way. In fact that would rightly be considered insulting and racist.

Age, disability, weight etc are also all much more of a spectrum than sex is. And yet that doesn't mean you can just identify as something your not in relation to them an expect to be taken seriously.

So all this sex is hard to define, sex is a spectrum blah blah doesn't prove or imply or lead to anything. Even if it was true, it doesn't mean identifying as something you aren't makes you that thing.

I am sorry I missed that thread! Did their proposed definition apply across plants and animals (large immobile gametes vs small motile ones)? Or did they get stuck on humans?

I think it's interesting to note that Trying20's thread was a majority of people saying sex is immutable and defined by the large/small gamete, DNA & chromosomes.

I think I counted 2-3 posters including Trying who were arguing that sex is fluid and human biological sex can be changed or at least I presume it would be if they could even define what sex was in the first place.

Real shame it was removed.

I was going to mention the "in the future we don't know what might be possible stuff" including the AIDS bit but then I am starting to feel a bit like people will think I am picking on @Trying20 when I hope he knows I really am not.

I do think it's clear from the thread just how important biology lessons/ hard, provable science can really be in a society.

Did they also state that sex is a western concept? That one always strikes me as particularly racist considering how advanced the ancient Chinese were including in areas like agriculture where a knowledge of sex is a prerequisite.

@BMW6 - the fact that men no longer wear naice hats as standard (as opposed to baseball or woolly hats - not sexy lads) is largely down to JFK. He had a full head of hair & without a hat (& with the sunglasses you red without a hat) he looked younger & cooler than Nixon, who was his chief rival. His success & perceived coolness created a lightning fashion craze to dump hats.
Ladies big hair at the same time made hat wearing tedious & a balancing act so they swiftly followed the blokes in dumping them - much to my personal sadness as I love hats
