What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

1000 replies

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
ClumpingBambooIsALie · 05/08/2022 15:18

'Your position is the most batshit thing I've ever heard, and I'm going to rip the piss out of it by saying so on a supposedly-lighthearted internet thread' = calculated to cause hurt and offence, and not okay.

If you think it's "not okay" to describe someone's position as the most batshit belief you've heard and take the piss out of it by saying so online, why come on a thread called "What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold" when the purpose of that thread is clearly to state that someone's position is the most batshit thing you've ever heard, and to rip the piss out of it by saying so on the thread?

Do you just like to torture yourself by making yourself look at lots of people doing something you don't think they should be doing? Or do you think the feelings of, say, Christians and TRAs are worthy of protection while the feelings of, say, flat-earthers and Icke followers are fair game?

Sunfriedegg · 05/08/2022 15:34

Ooh From the response I got, I do think being offended is the same as positioning as the V for Victim in DARVO. I’m still trying to work the others out , but I think we’ve also had Deny, Anger, possibly is reverse there as well ?

Bythisway · 05/08/2022 15:41

Having gender dysphoria and having treatment for it isn’t the same as saying people can change sex though.

No, but part of that treatment can involve changing some sex characteristics, enough for society (and law in many countries) to treat a person as if they have ‘changed sex’ for most purposes. That is part of the treatment goal.

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/08/2022 15:43

But it isn't changing sex.

Addicted2LuvIsland · 05/08/2022 15:46

There have been so many:

Covid isn't real as in people do not die from it nor can they get sick from it and that the government are trying to control us through the vaccine - yet this person would not visit vulnerable family members such as their grandmother. Also that if you gave a pcr to a mango it would test positive so no point in doing a test and you should do whatever you want because it isn't real.

If you take an uber it is dangerous and they are all rapists

If someone is gay they are a child molester

When talking about people of different ethnicities they say "I don’t see colour". Of course you can see colour. I'm mixed SE Asian and Arab im clearly not a white person. My partner is mixed race - he is clearly not white. We always both have a laugh when people say they don't see colour.

Gosh there are so many I cannot even remember. I will though and I will post them here.

That winning at bingo is a skill and not purely down to chance. My aunty thought this and didn’t understand that it was just good luck when she won

The numbers are obviously luck/chance but I want to say that there is some skill or lots of practice involved in being able to keep an eye on several cards at the same time! I was in awe of the ladies that had many cards, I could just about manage to keep track of two or three Blush

calculated to cause hurt and offence, and not okay.

That's a huge reach. It's simply an expression of disbelief. I do think it's batshit belief, and I do, shock horror, sometimes comment in a light hearted way about some of the more extreme elements of this ideology, of which there are many. I'm not the caretaker of these people's feelings. It's got nothing to do with them that I think their beliefs are silly. I assume, since I find the idea that males can ever become women offensive, as a woman, that you would equally suggest that people shouldn't say it? Otherwise you'd be a hypocrite, wouldn't you.

A totally bonkers one, but l knew someone who, when Sky tv first started, genuinely thought that they transmitted the programmes from a satellite studio actually in the sky.
Very disappointed when they found out that it was just done from a terrestrial studio, like 'ordinary' tv....

☺️ Do you know me? I was put straight pretty quickly but my brain still kept on imagining Sky tv presenters having to commute to the satellite to start work every day....

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2022 15:57

Especially when it's supplemented with lots of whataboutery, dilution of the argument, goal post changing and hyperbole which is where the "Reverse Victim and Offender" bit comes in.

Yes, this thread is a pretty good tutorial.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 05/08/2022 16:00

I guess it's partly because, like the Center Parcs dome, the satellite image was used to advertise it before anyone really understood what it was.

Quite.

Going to take up the cudgels on behalf of those of use who find the statement TWAW insulting and offensive @thedancingbear ?

For the avoidance of doubt it is a batshit belief and also harmful, dangerous and downright misogynistic.

@slowquickstep

As I've pointed out to more than one poster, Veronica knows that. It was the teacher who said it was nonsense. Veronica also replied similarly.

Here's a picture for any flat earthers out there…

Someone was telling me they are sure they had covid before it was recorded anywhere else in the world, pre winter 2019.

Oh I have a work acquaintance like this too! Is determined they had it in October 2019 before any reports from Wuhan emerged. Cannot countenance the idea they just may have had a bog standard non-Covid viral illness. Oh no they are special.
Pa they live and holiday in the U.K. and hadn't been closer to China than the Scottish border the whole year.

SleepingAgent · 05/08/2022 17:33

@Timeforanothername this is getting boring now Grin reread and read Veronica's reply! It was the teacher who was batshit wrong ...

thedancingbear · 05/08/2022 15:09

'I completely disagree with your view. I think it has no factual basis whatsoever.' = fine. People should not, on the whole, be shielded from views they find unpalatable, even if they cause offence. We can agree entirely on that (at least within very wide parameters )

'Your position is the most batshit thing I've ever heard, and I'm going to rip the piss out of it by saying so on a supposedly-lighthearted internet thread' = calculated to cause hurt and offence, and not okay. I don't think anyone has to be kind. But I think we should try to be civil and tolerant.

You're entitled to feel and post differently, of course. I'm not trying to shut anything down.

And yet still you’ve not explained why it was this one, particular, demonstrably false belief that you are getting upset about.

We’re more certain that people can’t change sex than that god doesn’t exist, so why have you picked this one crazy belief out of the others to argue the toss over?

StillHappy · 05/08/2022 17:49

Bythisway · 05/08/2022 15:41

Secondary characteristics. The difference really matters.

babyjellyfish · 05/08/2022 18:04

Since @Trying20's other thread has been taken down, I'd just like to state here for the record that believing that humans can change sex is way more batshit than believing that dinosaurs still exist.

I mean, technically, birds are dinosaurs.

But even if you discount birds, there are vast areas of the ocean that are unexplored by humans. Who knows what might be lurking at the bottom of them?

I'm not saying I believe there are still large dinosaurs on earth. I'm just saying that if one of "dinosaurs still exist" or "humans can change sex" had to be true, it would be the dinosaur thing for sure.
