What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

Mines alot more light-hearted sorry!! I actually believed until my late teens/early 20s that a haggis was a fluffy little 2 legged creature than roamed the Highlands of Scotland and was lured out to be hunted by people playing bagpipes!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I blame bagpuss!! 😂😂

I had a colleague who thought 9/11 was an inside job. I think that's the craziest I've seen in real life.

I literally just saw someone online who thinks that formula is poison and if you can't breastfeed you should give "homemade formula" based on raw milk.

@Trying20

Sexual reproduction in humans occurs via fusion of one small and one large gamete (anisogamy). "Sex" refers to one of the two reproductive roles in this process. Individuals that have developed anatomies for producing either small or large gametes, regardless of their past, present or future functionality, are referred to as "males" and "females", respectively. It is not possible for a human having developed the anatomy for production of small gametes to then change their anatomy to produce large gametes. Humans CANNOT change sex.

You clearly disagree. I would very much welcome hearing your views on how humans can change sex.

@Trying20

When other species such as clownfish change sex how do we know they have changed sex? Is it their internal feelings, cause they sure as shit can't tell us? Is it their lipstick or high heels?

Or is it that they change from producing small to large gametes?

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 21:52

You can disagree with it all you like, but there are plenty of scientists who have stated transgender people have brains more similar to the gender they believe they are.

If you mean sex, then this research is poor has a small sample size, and most importantly didn't also test gay and gender-non-comforming people (eg effeminate gay men or "tomboys") who don't ID as trans. We would need to know if this supposed similarity to the other sex is part of the general bell curve, or also corresponds to other conditions too, to know if it is relevant. It also didn't take into account the possible effects of hormone treatment.

However, if you do nonetheless think it's true, or if further, proper research does show that it's true, then you wouldn't support self-ID right? Because there would be a scan that could show if you were really trans - and you wouldn't want people faking it for nefarious reasons like cheating in sport or harassing women., and you wouldn't want people who weren't really trans mistakenly going through transition, using up resources and then detransitioning - right? So people could just have the scan and that would decide whether they were trans. So why do people who believe this want self-ID? I've never understood this.

What arena would you think it was appropriate to explain your views then? I'd really love to hear them. Shall I start a new thread for you to do so?

Yes I'd love to join that thread to listen to what @Trying20s thoughts are on this too

Sorry @Trying20 I'm not trying to single you out other than you have basically said you do have some in depth thoughts on this, I'd also love to hear from others who have replied in the same vein as you

Rainbowshit · 04/08/2022 22:04

@Trying20 I refer you to the regardless of their past, present or future functionality
part of my post.

Because their reproductive function is not functioning correctly or not being used does not render a human sexless. And even if it did it would STILL not have changed their sex from male to female now would it?

That some people believe it’s possible for people to change sex.

Oh, and DM once told me she thinks cats are humans reincarnated…like, WTAF Mum…

MightbeMaybe · 04/08/2022 22:06

Cross posted.

@Trying20 what you are talking about is the infertility of a man or woman (or same sex couples being unable to fertilise each other to reproduce) but they both are based in biological sex. It's a completely different thing and of course no one is saying that same sex couples or those that are infertile or become so due to eg hysterectomy are somehow lesser in their sex.

Rainbowshit · 04/08/2022 22:08

So your whole explanation is that because some humans might be infertile then there's no clear definition of sex therefore humans can change from male to female. Would you agree with that summary?

This ^ much better put than my attempt.

A distant relative believes you must never wear bare feet in the kitchen as you will get electrocuted by the fridge.

Grin Whereas for me it's because I might stand in cat vom.

Or in our last house you might stand on snails in the dark, we seemed to have Olympic standard gold medalist snails in getting into places.

Of course they have. 😂😂😂 and we can all see exactly why.

If you have to suggest that because your swimmers are not fertilising eggs then defining sex by reproductive role is not appropriate then you really are totally lost. 😂😂😂

Thought of this thread after a discussion today, that all disinformation, trolls, baiting articles/sm posts are just from the right wing.

The fact there is documented evidence of signal boosting divisive left leaning opinions (some I have seen repeated verbatim on MN) was dismissed. Political tribalism has become the new religion.
