What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

What do you mean by "bulletproof coffee people"?

A friend believed all babies were born with blue eyes and they changed colour as they grew.

I don't know about other races but most white babies are born with blue eyes that change are they not?

BiscuitLover3678 · 04/08/2022 21:16

Oh this is disappointing. I was hoping for some interesting conspiracy stories, not the standard trans debate. 🙄

I knew a guy who was convinced that the NHS specifically hired people who were ready to kill off black people to reduce their population. I understand ingrained societal racism and that there are big issues here but I didn’t agree that the nurses were deliberately trying to poison his gran!

I also followed someone on instagram who was all pro breastfeeding and supporting mums, all lovely, but very very anti vax. She also believes the government made up covid to try and control the population. Can’t put a vaccine in her body. Tattoos and piercings and everything else are fine though apparently . 😂

RobinHumphries · 04/08/2022 21:16

I was once told I was wrong for believing in evolution

in the early part of 2020 I was told Covid didn’t exist…. It was just a way of resetting the world’s economy. There’s (apparently) three ways of resetting the world’s economy, war, a natural disaster or a plague. COVID would be all over in a few months and magically the economy would be ok again

🫣 are you my friend 😬😬

NelStevHan · 04/08/2022 21:17

Friends parents who retired to Spain about 20 years ago came back especially to vote for Brexit to get ‘their’ country back. They genuinely believed they would hang in to all the rights as Brits abroad because they had residency.
Turns out that’s really not true…

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 21:18

The advert line could be something like “It’s like Centre Parcs but the dome is real”

I would defo go.

I found this, which has the original advert and then a lovely Wish You Were Here section. I maintain the way the advert is filmed is very deceptive! I very much enjoyed watching the 1994 promo video though. If I can go in 1994, I will go!

That President Assad of Syria is a kind and gentle man who is just misunderstood by the rest of the world.

(The 'friend' who shared that view is no longer my FB friend)

My DH knows / knew his wife, they trained and then worked together in Deutsche Bank.

She was apparently perfectly normal back then, no signs of genocidal tendencies at all.

NelStevHan · 04/08/2022 21:19

‘I don't know about other races but most white babies are born with blue eyes that change are they not?’

no, they or not! It’s down to genetics so could be brown, grey, blue, black even… though a newborns eye colour often does change

ddl1 · 04/08/2022 21:20

I think 'soul realignment' therapy is pretty batshit, though I know one or two people who swear by it. It's defined on one site as a 'Multidimensional Advanced Method of Healing by Accessing Information from your Akashic Record'. On another site: 'Soul alignment is essentially aligning your energy vibration with the vibration of your soul. Being in soul alignment is the same thing as being high vibration! This is because when you align yourself with your higher self, your soul, you're aligning with the high frequencies that the soul vibrates at.'

I don’t agree that believing you can change sex is batshit and think you’re a bit batshit for putting it in the same category as fairies. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You clearly think the belief that humans can change sex is rational. Please explain how you came to that conclusion?

At what point in "transition" would you say someone's sex has changed?

You can disagree with it all you like, but there are plenty of scientists who have stated transgender people have brains more similar to the gender they believe they are. Yes there are still arguments about this and of course mumsnet is the expert in alternative research, but there is still more research and evidence for this then, I don’t know, the queen being a secret lizard. 😂 It’s silly to pretend you don’t know that.

NelStevHan · 04/08/2022 21:23

I know the earth is only 6,000 years old nutters… had to stop one from telling my children that the Giants Causeway was built like that and the rocks are hexagonal because god wanted it that way.
this was in the geology exhibit at the entrance to the Causeway.
bible bashing idiot. Everyone knows that Fionn MacCool built it, why else is it called the Giant’s Causeway??🤔

Look, I get it. It's a big issue for you. Climate change is my own personal hobby horse and I feel very strongly about it. But I don't bring it up all the time. I could but won't do any good and I'll just bore people.

But this thread is asking for exactly this sort of thing.

Religions, homeopathy, bodily humours, flat Earth, people changing sex, they are all crazy, but most don’t intrude into normal, adult life. Even the major religions tend to be a bit reticent about demanding non-members subscribe to their beliefs.

Is there any other similarly crazy view that’s to the fire in modern society in the U.K.?

If the bishops in the House of Lords were demanding that they be allowed to go into schools to promote a literal belief in the ascension and in sinners going to hell then that’d dominate conversations.

As it is it’s trans beliefs that are doing this, with their ideas of a gendered soul, and all the other unevidenced religious doctrines.

Whynow2021 · 04/08/2022 21:25

That anyone, who is not white, is less than.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/08/2022 21:26

That the symptoms of what are now known to be autoimmune diseases are caused by the presence of an image or representation of elephants and are absolutely nothing to do with an arsehole of an immune system.

(FIL and his sister)

DP didn't have much fun as a child with severe Psoriasis. His father just about got persuaded that UV treatment was OK because 'it's just electric sunshine, MrDPDad'. But other than that, no treatment.

That Psoriatic arthritis doesn't exist. Not heard of it before, so it can't be real.

(MIL)

That Psoriasis, in the absence of any malevolent pachydermal imagery (because it was already banned from the house due to the Grandfather's history of magical induction of illness), was caused by the unfortunate six year old getting lost when playing, as the Psoriasis appeared for the first time at an unspecified point in the year following those five minutes before he worked out he was just the other side of a hydrangea and found his way back to the right garden.

(FIL, MIL and DP's Auntie)

That the BCG contained diseased badgers. (FIL - an OG antivaxxer)

That autoimmune disease simultaneously doesn't exist, as it's all in the mind, and is also real when a doctor says so but is caused by the power of your thoughts because you want to be dependent upon benefits and trap your partner into being a carer out of pure spite. Or your parent wants you to become dependent upon benefits as an independent adult, thus accounting for you having a diagnosis before you're old enough to know what an immune system is. And taking paracetamol means you're a drug addict.

(My ex. It's what his parents taught him, apparently)

That having a diagnosed autoimmune disease affecting your joints means that you can't possibly have another autoimmune disease that's more inconvenient in terms of needing to not have wheat, gluten, barley, oats or milk and you're just a faddy eater who will get over it if every meal for the next 14 years consists of at least two of those things.

(My mother)

That there's no such thing as arthritis in anybody under 70 and anybody claiming to have it is clearly lying to excuse poor attitudes at work and obesity, so must be referred to Occupational Health so they can establish that the employee is lying and can therefore be fired.

(An ex Headteacher. Previously a PE teacher to boot)

That autoimmune diseases are caused by;

Eating nightshade vegetables
Your blood being acidic
Drinking orange juice or having any acidic foods with the exception of apple cider vinegar, which, despite being literally acidic, turns into an alkalising agent once consumed
Eating animal products
Not eating animal products
Not eating enough animal products
Eating too many animal products
Not eating the right type of animal products
Eating the wrong type of vegetables
Eating cooked food
Not eating enough fruit
Not eating nothing but blended fruit
Eating all of the above if not produced in the most expensive manner possible
Vaccinations
Not having a strong enough immune system so that it needs to be 'boosted' by consuming vitamin C in industrial quantities
Constipation
Taking part in exercise or physical activity
Not taking part in exercise or physical activity
The strain of being overweight or obese on the non weightbearing joints even when the person has had a diagnosis since they were a two stone preschooler.
Thinking sad thoughts.
Not having faith in a supernatural being, the exact nature of which can vary
Eating more than once a day
Not fasting regularly
Drinking alcohol
Not drinking alcohol

(Assorted health, wellness and diet gurus that make a shit ton of money from flogging books and media features on their 'magic secret cures' and their worshippers)

That more and more people are turning away from religion and belief in God's existence , despite witness how bad the world is turning.

Tes because back when more people were religious everything was fine and dandy in the world. 🙄

This ignorant post.
You can't prove God doesn't exist the same way they can't prove God does exist.
Get an education - not just what's in your curriculum.

But given that there is literally no evidence at all that any god exists, asserting that not only they do, but that you know what they want is definitely very strange.

Even if research proves that trans people's brains are more "similar" to another gender (hint, it doesn't) it still does fuck all to ACTUALLY change your sex. It's silly to pretend that it does.

The batshit Italian restaurant owner in Brussels who refused to serve me strawberries because they would cause my baby to have red birthmarks. I was 7 or 8 months pregnant at the time. Never went back.

When my twins were born I commented that they had blue eyes and the midwife told me all babies have blue eyes they may change.
