What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

October is the cruellest month . . .

I thought that was April?😊

That is a common belief if your partner is from an eastern faith / origins.

Evangelical christians

I think that @thedancingbear is busy with the dictionary

Your last three posts have comprised simple personal insults. You are making the debate toxic.

other people read these posts, you know

@mam0918 actually there’s a grain of truth in that hairdressing story - tiny cut pieces of hair actually can implant into hairdressers’ skin! It’s called pilonidal sinus, and is found especially in the hands and between the fingers — sometimes also called barber’s disease.

It certainly doesn’t grow into new hairs, but the hair pieces can literally penetrate the skin and cause painful sores that don’t heal without a lot of treatment. It’s rare these days but still is a thing, so her anxiety about it isn’t as odd as it sounds!

I never go barefoot indoors-I've had both cat and dog hairs work their way into my soles before now; and they're very painful

theclangersarecoming · 04/08/2022 20:40

thedancingbear · 04/08/2022 20:07

But it’s the polarisation of the debate - one side insult the other side’s views as batshit and/or bigoted - that has made it so toxic

Plenty of people have posted on the thread that religion, including transubstantiation, Covid denialism, voting Tory (or Labour) and antivax beliefs are batshit, but there aren’t hordes of antivaxxers from the Covid board getting on the thread to tell us all off for being “boring”, “toxic” or whatever, I notice. Or Brexiteers jumping on to argue about Brexit. It’s only on the changing sex issue that suddenly the thread is full of disapproving posters trying to police others about the topic.

Which is quite the indication that there is something uniquely odd about this set of beliefs, which is setting off some kind of special reaction. We’ve all heard more than enough about Covid, Brexit and Tory/Labour party politics, I’m sure; but it’s only one issue that’s being policed with disapproval and finger-wagging. Why so? Could it be that it’s a little bit too close to home to point out the religious, manifestly “magical thinking” basis of the whole ideology?

If you think gender ideology is toxic because women (shock horror!) want to discuss it, do you say the same about any other political or religious discussion? Do you pop into the Covid board on the regular and do a bit of finger wagging at the posters there?

The moon does influence the tide

I think you’ve misunderstood what the poster actually wrote.

She was saying that years ago her when her husband was a kid, his teacher was explaining about people holding unscientific beliefs and included the example of the moon influencing the tides as an incorrect belief.

In other words, the teacher didn't realise that the moon did in fact affect tides and thought it was part of superstitious folklore.

A friend of mine about 10 years ago excitedly informed me that humans will evolve soon and lose our little fingers, because no one uses them whilst typing anymore.

🤷‍♀️ I didn't even know where to start....

thedancingbear · 04/08/2022 19:33

Why don’t you just post the word ‘trans’? We all know what you mean, and it’ll save you typing it all out again.

Because I didn’t need to, I was describing a batshit ideology, not any particular people - I have nothing against trans people, it is the ideology that so many find batshit crazy, and too many people go along with it because they haven’t actually thought through how crazy “born in the wrong body” actually is.

That more and more people are turning away from religion and belief in God's existence , despite witness how bad the world is turning.

I’m confused. Which bit is a batshit belief?
Turning away from religion or believing in a mythical being?

Have you misread? Not sure what the sexual offences act has to do with homosexuality.

The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 decriminalised sex between men (albeit over the age of 21).

It was the defining step forwards in Gay Rights.

That’s crazy. It was obviously the Queen.

Rainbowshit · 04/08/2022 21:01

@Trying20
I don’t agree that believing you can change sex is batshit and think you’re a bit batshit for putting it in the same category as fairies. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You clearly think the belief that humans can change sex is rational. Please explain how you came to that conclusion?

At what point in "transition" would you say someone's sex has changed?

NelStevHan · 04/08/2022 21:01

I worked with someone who was brought up in a religious sect and he believed that men are supposed to be the ‘headm of the family and make all decisions that women and children follow - but he was to be benevolent and take their wishes under consideration as their protector or some
wu b bullshit. Fairly normal
and quite sweet otherwise, although he was 23 and honestly believed all of this. He was also a virgin so got married at 23 to someone who was the fringes of his church,
mainly to get laid we all thought.
he very patiently put up with any teasing around this and always had a counter argument to anything anyone said about his beliefs.

Orangello · 04/08/2022 21:03

You can't prove God doesn't exist the same way they can't prove God does exist.

Did you know there's a big but invisible unicorn orbiting the sun just between Mercury and Mars, controlling everything we do and hearing all our thoughts? You can't prove there isn't.

That Stevie Wonder isn’t really blind, he just wears sunglasses and pretends.

Re the coffee, don’t bulletproof coffee people put butter in it? So cheese isn’t too far a stretch, assuming it’s soft. Obviously you wouldn’t put Parmesan in it. Unless grated.

What do you mean by "bulletproof coffee people"? 🤔

Both are real. (Bearded dragon)

SuperCamp · 04/08/2022 21:09

Okay - by your approach, I think your views on trans right are batshit and you can’t decide whether or not I’m allowed to think that

Trying20: you don’t know what her views on trans rights are. You know her views on people who think the DNA in every cell in your body can change from XY to XX.

And many of the people who believe this are not even trans.

Rainbowshit · 04/08/2022 21:09

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 20:08

trans rights is quite clearly in the ‘debate’ territory

But there is something disingenuous going on here IMO because no one has said it's batshit that trans people should have rights - the same rights others have, to be from persecution and prejudice and discrimination etc. "trans rights" has not come up on this thread. It is gender ideology that is being called batshit. That you can change sex, that you can have some kind of genuine female sexed self born in a male body or vice versa, that a child who rejects gender stereotypes is magically the opposite sex and needs corrective treatment. It is the impossible, magic, transubstantiation-like aspect of the ideology that is being called batshit. Not "trans rights".

Absolutely this. ^^

Salome61 · 04/08/2022 21:11

A friend believed all babies were born with blue eyes and they changed colour as they grew.

CuntAmongstThePigeons · 04/08/2022 21:11

Came on to say the belief that you can change sex but I can see many other people got there before me.

Those criticizing people saying it seem to think that saying you think gender ideology is batshit is the same as saying you think trans people are batshit or trans rights are batshit. That's patently not what people are saying. And what you're failing to take into account is the many trans people who DONT believe in gender ideology, who don't think they actually change sex. There's plenty of gender critical trans people who see it as purely a medical issue. Not this quasi religious movement (cult)

Also center parcs, I too was in my late twenties before I realized the dome was all a lie.
