What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 19:47

I thought this was gonna be a really funny thread about genuinely batshit stuff like lizard cults and fairies, and the trans issue came up in something like the third comment.

I do see what you mean (although to me there's not much difference bewteen believing in fairies and believing that a man saying "I'm a woman" makes him a woman - they're both magical thinking). It means it descends into a gender ideology argument - but only because people posted to try to shut it down, so the arguments started. If they hadn't, it would have just been among the list of batshit things.

Also some other topics have appeared multiple times, and some of the "batshit" things have been disagreed with or disproved. The difference is those posts engaged in a genuine discussion or debate. The ones responding to gender ideology being batshit instead just sneered and told us not to talk about it.

That reason she's fat is because she drinks too much diet coke.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 19:42

the thread was trans-derailed from the first page

And you're adding to it, aren't you.

By that token, so are you.

if you don’t want this thread to be about trans, stop posting.

You’ve misunderstood the meaning of “derail”. The OP asks us to answer a very simple question. If every poster up to this point, page 22, answered - as I did - “that people can change sex”, they haven’t derailed the thread. They’ve simply answered the question.

Is there an unwritten rule that the OP actually wanted every poster to give a different answer - ?

You can moan about posters giving the same answer but we don’t care. We’re answering the question. Your point is actually pointless.

I actually believed in 2008 that Obama's election would prove that all Americans, no matter their race, could achieve the nations highest office - and all would be well.

I was shocked and disappointed how Obama, and his wife, divided the country racially.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 19:50

I'm largely ambivalent. It's up to you. It looks like you want it to be about it more than anyone. As long as you can put us gender critical women in our place.

It’s true that a curved glass object and paper in the sunlight could start a fire. maybe they got confused…

Re flat Earth, what don’t get is why it matters. If the Earth was flat well then it would be flat, why would anyone need to pretend it wasn’t and trick all the sheeple into believing it’s round?

@BlossomsOnATree

It's westerners that hold this belief maybe these particular ones are holding onto their pride that their ancestors couldn't have got this wrong. Whereas, in what is now India and other nearby countries since their civilization it's always been considered that the world is a sphere.
I think it's a pride thing.
(India being a more ancient civilization)

Jim Morrison feigned his own death and is still alive somewhere parading under the alias of Mr Mojo Risin.

The only tangible reality is that which can be seen, felt and experienced through the limits of human perception.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 19:59

TSIFT that's interesting - though some ancient Greeks also knew it was round.

There does seem to be a strong element of superiority about a lot of the conspiracy theory beliefs. It's not just about the belief itself, but being of the special class that knows the truth and isn't the sheeple.

That they don't want to be an organ donor because they don't want to feel anything or see anything from the new recipients eyes.

Ooh I love this one. It's kind of profound!

There was a show in America which told the story about a heart recipient tracing their original family as in the family of the heart donor via what they dreamt - so who knows?!
The hospital came onto say that they didn't give the information as they don't have it themselves.

I agree - it's beyond horrible and hurtful to say something like that, particularly to someone who has been so traumatically abused.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/08/2022 20:01

@Bergamotte, in the early days of fossil discoveries, people used to say they’d been put there by the Devil, to ‘maze men’s minds.’ (Presumably meaning to make them disbelieve the Genesis story of creation.)

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 20:01

Has anyone said that they once believed that Centre Parcs was in a massive dome that covered a huge site, and you just stayed within the dome all the time? I confess I didn't realise it wasn't for quite some time Grin the early adverts gave this impression

That the covid vaccine would turn us all into robots. My neighbour told me this without a trace of irony. She was absolutely convinced that this would happen.

I just backed away slowly.........

I have a friend who sent me a link to a YouTube piece by Rachel Elnaugh, a batshit crazy anti-vaxxer who said the vaccine would be full of nano bots so the authorities could control us. Friend believed RE was really onto something.

I also knew that transgender people would be mentioned too. Many of you, sure are predicable (and wrong).

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 20:05

I also think that by coming onto a thread and listing the idea as “batshit”

You cannot actually change biological sex though. It is just as batshit as believing any number of improbable things. You can't decide for other people whether they can believe something is batshit or not. Believing that Brexit was a good idea is not batshit in the same way, because the EU isn't a scientific mandate.

The belief mentioned is that you can change sex. It is not possible for humans to change sex. Fish can change sex, and can also breathe underwater naturally. Humans can do neither of these things. It's a belief exactly in line with the one you mention.
