What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

1000 replies

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:

Has anyone said that they once believed that Centre Parcs was in a massive dome that covered a huge site, and you just stayed within the dome all the time? I confess I didn't realise it wasn't for quite some time Grin the early adverts gave this impression

I believed that untilI read your post just now.

I'm disappointed.

I also knew that transgender people would be mentioned too. Many of you, sure are predicable (and wrong).

In what way are we “wrong”? Is there a “right answer”?

If so, please share.

I also think that by coming onto a thread and listing the idea as “batshit”

You cannot actually change biological sex though. It is just as batshit as believing any number of improbable things. You can't decide for other people whether they can believe something is batshit or not. Believing that Brexit was a good idea is not batshit in the same way, because the EU isn't a scientific mandate.

But it’s the polarisation of the debate - one side insult the other side’s views as batshit and/or bigoted - that has made it so toxic

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 20:08

trans rights is quite clearly in the ‘debate’ territory

But there is something disingenuous going on here IMO because no one has said it's batshit that trans people should have rights - the same rights others have, to be from persecution and prejudice and discrimination etc. "trans rights" has not come up on this thread. It is gender ideology that is being called batshit. That you can change sex, that you can have some kind of genuine female sexed self born in a male body or vice versa, that a child who rejects gender stereotypes is magically the opposite sex and needs corrective treatment. It is the impossible, magic, transubstantiation-like aspect of the ideology that is being called batshit. Not "trans rights".

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 20:08

And you add to that toxicity.

Well he may have a point.

The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 was very close to the introduction of women in capri pants as introduced by Audrey Hepburn, and the hipster trousers and bell bottoms introduced by terrible ‘free love’ hippies.

Or else it is a fantastic illustration of the difference between cause and correlation.

Have you misread? Not sure what the sexual offences act has to do with homosexuality.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 20:11

Okay - by your approach, I think your views on trans right are batshit and you can’t decide whether or not I’m allowed to think that.

Absolutely. But some opinions are more rooted in fact than others. I can have a view that Paris is the capital of Spain, but it's not equally rational to the one where it's in France.

(Equally, you can think I’m batshit. And that’s fine and I can’t do anything about that. We can both agree to differ on it and walk away, which is what I think we should do.)

Happy to! Stop telling people what to post though, and we're all good.

My husband had a teacher [admittedly many decades ago] who told them that people used to believe lots of unscientific superstitious nonsense, for example they thought the moon influenced the tides.

More recently my daughter did A-level biology with a girl who thought chickens fed baby chicks on milk. Because chicken breasts.
This young woman went on to become a primary school teacher.

The moon does influence the tide

That humans have the right to bring into existence, torture and then murder animals for a meal

But they do have that right, so it’s not a crazy belief. Do you mean that you prefer that they don’t, or are you really saying that there is something that stops them having the right?

The OP uses the word “batshit” in her question so is it surprising that people have used it in their answers?

If the OP had asked: “What’s the worst experience you’ve ever had in a restaurant?” and people use the word “worst” in their responses, they’re not polarising the debate.

Along with “derail”, please check the meaning of “polarise” in the dictionary, or try not to use words you don’t entirely understand when criticising other posters.

Lovelyricepudding · 04/08/2022 20:12

I thought this was gonna be a really funny thread about genuinely batshit stuff like lizard cults and fairies,

Believing you can change sex IS genuinely batshit stuff like fairies. It appears repeatedly because a lot of people agree it is batshit. I am not sure why you think one is batshit and the other not?

Indian civilization came before Greek civilization.
Western civilization is actually Greek civilization so it's amazing that some countries lost that knowledge.
There's a mythical story in India about a king - the king of the world - he had 4 sons - the king tested his sons and said which one of you will give me my youth back? (As in swap ages)
Only the very youngest agreed.
The King cursed the other 3.
The one that stands out is - to one son he cursed he said you will be the King of the uncivilised Yanavs.
Yanav is an old word to mean the people that inhibited what we know call the west. Greek civilization father of modern western civilization.
So on that story alone I'd say the Greeks got their info from India as well.
This story is thousands of years old - 4000 odd.
As you know the Gregorian calendar is a business calendar for other parts of the world and they have their own timelines etc. @BlossomsOnATree

I can’t find the responding post to mine. I don’t believe that a man or woman would take such an extreme decision on a whim. It must be horrendously tough mentally and physically to do it. Plus very expensive as I imagine the medication is not cheap. Then there is potential side effects down the line.
My point is that there is an environmental reason or it is a biological one. As you and others are saying biologically changing gender cannot be done then it must be environmental.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 20:16

I think there was a mumsnet thread about it a while back and it dawned on me then. "What it's not all in a dome? Some of them must be in a dome, that's the point of them isn't it?!"

FrancescaContini · 04/08/2022 20:16

The OP is asking for an OPINION. There’s no right or wrong answer. You can say what the hell you like. It’s risible that some posters are arguing about what other people are writing.
