What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
Lovelyricepudding · 04/08/2022 18:50

So dancingbear you agree the belief that humans can change sex is batshit too?

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/08/2022 18:53

A friend posted on FB that the Ukrainian army was made up of Nazi satanists. With a photo of a muscle man tattoo'd with devilish designs.

I de-friended. I know that in war truth is the first casualty and all, but that is just sheer bollocks and offensive. I feel sorry for many of the soldiers on both sides bus no one needs these lies spreading around. I thought she was quite an intelligent lass as well.

I wouldn't quite go as far as batshit: to make it true, for me, you need to distend the meaning of words to the point where they lose their meaning. And some of the consequences of treating men as women are not acceptable, we can agree on that.

But it seem like if you're not full-on 'trans people are out to erase women and this is the main social issue of our century' then you are the enemy. That's knocking on towards batshit territory too.

Look, I get it. It's a big issue for you. Climate change is my own personal hobby horse and I feel very strongly about it. But I don't bring it up all the time. I could but won't do any good and I'll just bore people.

I would like the Green Party to concentrate on climate change rather than implode with all the trans rights talk.

I am a biology teacher that taught ecology topics. I can’t believe the Green Party many members are so batshit as to think sex can change in humans. It can’t. Stop spending time on that and eroding women’s rights. I want the old Green Party back.

I know someone who swears blind that dinosaurs never existed. That the skeletons in museums are 'just a pile of old bones that they've found, and put together to look like something'.
The same person also insists she saw a unicorn at a horse show. A 'real live one'.

That is such an adorably ridiculous combination of ideas to hold!

I don't understand all the people who refuse to believe in dinosaurs because they "aren't in the bible." The bible doesn't contain a complete list of all animals.
(I recently looked up a breed of tree and the information online included the fact that the tree was mentioned in the bible, so clearly it doesn't contain a list of all plants, either!)
I know there are a few small sects who don't believe in evolution, so think fossil evidence of this is planted by the devil.
And / or who think the world is only a certain number of years old, so geology, fossils and carbon dating etc which show it is older, must be lies.
And we only know about dinosaurs from fossils, so I can see their logic.

But are there really people who say dinosaurs are not real, just because they weren't in the bible?

That more and more people are turning away from religion and belief in God's existence , despite witness how bad the world is turning.

I vote for this post for one of the most batshit.

Although I have seen some corkers of mumsnet recently. Apparently the Scottish government are covering up witchcraft and people are regularly being raped by ghosts.

bloodyplanes · 04/08/2022 18:57

That there is a god wizard in the sky who watches over us all. All the while children die of cancer, get abused, murdered etc! Religion is the root of all evil.

I know someone who genuinely believes in chemtrials. It wouldn’t surprise me if she was a flat earth we Tbf… we don’t speak much…

Ive a family member with a PHD in biology who only found out recently that Narwhals are real

I am also a person who only found out embarrassingly recently that Narwhals are real - I'm a proper grown up and everything

It's the fucking shoehorning into everything, and the way the anti-trans proponents seem unable to think or care about anything else.

It's the way every single thread the subject could possibly apply to gets railroaded onto this single subject. Some of us actually want to enjoy the website, and this thread was so obviously meant to be light-hearted.

And fwiw, I don't think people can change sex; the behaviour of some of the TRAs is disturbing; and I share concerns about men (which is what they are) in women's sport, some single-sex spaces etc. But I don't think it's the only fucking thing happening in the world that matters.

The 'anti-trans' are just saying what you've just said!

I agree - especially when people say "at least Boris knows what a woman is" to insult Kier Starmer - Boris barely knows what a person who didn't go to Eton is - what he does know is how to read which way the wind is blowing - whether or not he believes it - and that applies to all Tories.

Do the people who have said we shouldn't talk about certain topics realise they have just allowed us all to talk about it even more. 😂😂😂

When are you TRAs going to learn that we just are not going to be told to be quiet.

thing47 · 04/08/2022 19:05

That someone with Type I diabetes got it from eating too much sugar as a child.

And that a diabetic who faints, collapses or has a fit requires insulin; they don't, they require sugar. (OK so that's not batshit, but it's wrong, and potentially very dangerous).

Oh, post all you like. Free speech is important.

but by decrying everyone who doesn’t think trans is the only important social issue of our time as ‘TRA’, you’re making my point for me.

A friend's elderly uncle claimed that women wearing trousers contributed to an increase in male homosexuality, citing as evidence that he never saw may male homosexuals before women started wearing trousers.

Well he may have a point.

The Sexual Offences Act of 1967 was very close to the introduction of women in capri pants as introduced by Audrey Hepburn, and the hipster trousers and bell bottoms introduced by terrible ‘free love’ hippies.

Or else it is a fantastic illustration of the difference between cause and correlation.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 19:10

And fwiw, I don't think people can change sex

Yes, that's why people are mentioning it here. Look at the title of the thread.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 19:10

a) it's not anti-trans. Lots of trans people don't believe gender ideology either. Not believing an unevidenced ideology is not the same thing as hating trans people, any more than not being a christian means hating christians.

b) it's a big concern for a lot of us because it is harming us. Harming our freedom of thought, belief and speech, endangering our jobs, taking away women's right to be identified as a sex class and have their own safe spaces and services, and gay people's right to be same sex-attracted, and endangering lots of our kids who are ND, autistic or non-conforming. Of course that's a big deal.

Supersee · 04/08/2022 19:10

Has anyone on this thread said trans issues are the only important social issue of this time? Is it not possible to mention one issue, but simultaneously care about more than one?

This thread is about things people have found batshit.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/08/2022 19:11

I just want to say how much I've appreciated your posts on this thread, Blossom, you have a great way of explaining things.

SuperCamp · 04/08/2022 19:15

GeorgeCat1 · 04/08/2022 17:41

I thought this would be a light-hearted thread about funny things people believe. Again, multiple posts about the trans issue. If you were in a pub and this conversation came up, would people use it as an oppertunity to bang the drum? Is your whole life like this? Give it a rest ffs. Just for one thread. I'm very glad that mumsnet is not reflective of real life in this instance.

But yesterday I read a whole thread on Twitter where Transwomen and their allies were adamant that TW have periods.

They discussed putting frozen tomato and beetroot ‘enemas’ in their rectums, how they get cramps, and absolutely do menstruate.

I am NOT ‘anti-trans’ but on a lighthearted thread about batshittery, TW ramming frozen juice up their arses and experiencing period cramps is the most batshit belief I have personally witnessed.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 19:16

Yes, no is being been challenged to defend flat earth theory because no one has come on the thread and complained about people calling flat earth theory batshit and told them to give it a rest.

If you think mentioning gender ideology is so boring, you could just skip/ignore the post and carry on. But instead you seem to want to sneer and put down people, and wrongly accuse them of transphobia, for talking about it. You're encouraging us to talk about it more by demonstrating the illogical behaviour we're talking about. You want to shut it down but refuse to explain why.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 19:17
