What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

1000 replies

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:

I thought this would be a light-hearted thread about funny things people believe. Again, multiple posts about the trans issue. If you were in a pub and this conversation came up, would people use it as an oppertunity to bang the drum? Is your whole life like this? Give it a rest ffs. Just for one thread. I'm very glad that mumsnet is not reflective of real life in this instance.

Actually it is coming up all over the place for me. At my sports club, at a gathering with friends the other weekend a friend was saying how her other friendship group have all come out as identifying as T*RFs. It was discussed at a family gathering recently.

These conversations ARE happening. All over the place. As much as you folk would like to shut everyone up it's not working.
This is a big big issue.

AlwaysAuntie · 04/08/2022 18:09

I've heard of a few conspiracy theories from various people, but one that stands out the most is that the Queen passed away awhile ago and there's a lookalike attending Her Majesty's engagements.

Blueberry111 · 04/08/2022 18:10

That more and more people are turning away from religion and belief in God's existence , despite witness how bad the world is turning.

Give it a rest ffs.

People are bringing it up because they think it's a very obvious batshit belief of the moment.

When people on this thread disagree that a belief is batshit, they have pointed that out and explained why it's not batshit. Why don't you do that?

Shaking your head, tutting at the transphobia and telling us to shut up isn't an explanation of why we're wrong, FYI.

Why aren't you tutting about the flat earther-phobia, religious-person-phobia, homeopath-phobia etc? Because you know thinking a belief is batshit/untrue does not equal hatred.

Thinking humans can change sex at will, and that it's a good idea to encourage distressed, autistic, gay and gnc kids down a pathway of lifelong hormones and surgical changes, despite the fact that somehow (especially if you're an adult male) you can change sex just by saying so, is something i would describe as batshit. But if I'm wrong, explain why, with evidence and logic. The funny thing is no one ever does. Having a belief that you can't (r refuse to) defend with science and logic, yet think everyone else should agree with, is... well batshit.

Look, I get it. It's a big issue for you. Climate change is my own personal hobby horse and I feel very strongly about it. But I don't bring it up all the time. I could but won't do any good and I'll just bore people.

MightbeMaybe · 04/08/2022 18:12

Sirius3030 · 04/08/2022 12:29

No it isn’t. There are animals that change sex. Doubtless one day biological science / genetic engineering will make it feasible in other animals. Take that how you will.

Ah the ole "frogs can do it!" argument. Problem is that we are humans not amphibious creatures with the ability to change sex at the moment.

An old friend went COVID conspiracy crazy, Bill Gates, NWO, the vaccine made to make us infertile or just straight up kill us off. No amount of sensible discussion would sway her and in the end I had to ask if we could stop talking about COVID entirely, she would get herself so raging angry about it and it was incredibly uncomfortable on top of being utter bat shit sadly.

Supersee · 04/08/2022 18:13

@Trying20 thinking humans can change sex is pretty batshit. The others you mentioned are batshit.

The difference is not believing the former is getting people sacked from jobs, threatened with rape and doxxing, putting vulnerable women at risk in prisons, women's hostels and rape centres, and denying women places on sports teams amongst others.

So ram your 'ya boring'. People screaming transphobe at any mention of stating fact against belief are beyond boring.

SweetcornFritter · 04/08/2022 18:16

I have debated with Young Earth Creationists who believe that the Earth is 6000 years old and that every word of the Bible is true, that Noah filled an ark with a pair of every species of animal on the planet including every species of dinosaur. There is a forum somewhere where these people hang out and ridicule the beliefs of non-YEC people who say that the earth is millions of years old. They have an answer for everything and are very well informed yet also completely mad.

thedancingbear · 04/08/2022 18:18

Trans people blah blah yawn

Crankley · 04/08/2022 18:19

Fully agree the idea of Labour being successful in government is really batshit, they barely fuction as an Opposition Party.

I knew someone who insisted the world is 6,000 (as opposed to approx 3.5 billion) years old. I asked her to explain fossils going back millions+ of years - she said 'God put them there'. Hmm

Aiionwatha · 04/08/2022 18:23

There have been various posts about politics, flat earthers, antivaxxers, lizard people, science… why are people’s views on trans off limits?

Lovelyricepudding · 04/08/2022 18:25

I see it has been mentioned already - the batshit belief that humans can change sex. Or that 'intersex' is some sort of hermaphrodite rather than a disorder of sexual development in individuals who are either male or female. Just because someone on the Internet says they have two penises and three wombs doesn't make it true. And just because someone takes hormonal drugs and has cosmetic surgery doesn't make them change sex. Nor is medication advancing to a point where people can.

Lovelyricepudding · 04/08/2022 18:27

Also the crazy belief that men artificially lowering their testosterone levels someone makes it fair for them to compete against women.

ClaudiusTheGod · 04/08/2022 18:30

Franca123 · 04/08/2022 17:33

A friend believed in indigo children - like a generation of people who have an indigo halo surrounding them. That they are chosen and unique and special. Obviously she was one of them!

But the most batshit is that men become women when they decide they are a woman.

That belief seems to have died out now. I think the indigo children just grew up to be pretty ordinary adults.

LakieLady · 04/08/2022 18:30

Myownpapillon · 04/08/2022 11:49

That jam is made by fruit bees

That is really a rather lovely bonkers belief.

In this world view, are there different types of bee making different types of jam, or do they make the different types by visiting different sorts of flower?

Jetstream · 04/08/2022 18:33

There is an asexual whelk, from memory. could be a dog whelk. There are lots of cases where endocrine disruption causes sex changes in animals. Usually it’s due to pollution or, for example, Estrogen ( from the pill)not being adequately removed by processing in water treatment plants. In fact there was a case in Kildare a few years ago. The fish in a waterbody were all female. Turns out the above happened. They used fine sand to remove the estrogen and fish returned to male and female.

Ringmaster27 · 04/08/2022 18:36

Apart from my quite controversial thoughts on genuinely believers in organised religion (thank you Catholic upbringing 🤨👍🏻), probably the most batshit came out of my Nana’s mouth. She had a shit fit as I was drinking a can of Diet Coke while breastfeeding DC3. Apparently the bubbles in the drink would make my milk fizzy and give the baby wind 😂
I politely pointed out that if I’ve got fizzy bubbles in my blood, I’ve got way more pressing concerns than my baby having a stuck burp 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂

UniversalAunt · 04/08/2022 18:36

A KS2 child I know well has told me unprompted that she has been taught in UK primary state school that a baby’s sex is assigned at birth & they can change that later.

Sex & assigned - her words.

At her age, I was taught the fundamentals of sex education & how human reproduction takes place, that’s plenty enough for Y5.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 18:39

It seems like it's a big issue for you to the extent that you feel the need to try to shut down people who mention it, but you don't do that with other topics. Trying to shut up or shame people for discussing it is boring, especially when you don't provide any evidence or argument to show why we're mistaken. But on you go.

And I wouldn't mind at all if someone raised climate change a lot. It's important and threatens us all. Gender ideology is also important as it is causing a lot of harm and risk. Again, go on, explain why not. I asked you to and you just came back with sneering that it's a big issue for me and I'm being boring. Try again?

Creasedtshirts · 04/08/2022 18:42

That powdered baby milk makes people gay.... I wish I was joking! 😑

Some people genuinely believe a Kier Starmer-led Labour government would actually be better than the current one.

Just because something is terrible doesn't mean an alternative is necessarily better.

It absolutely definitely would - this is definitely not a batshit belief. A batshit belief is that the Tories are a decent government

'Asexual' means reproduce without sex - so cloning themselves. Many plants do this eg strawberries produce plantlets, and some animals (aphids reproduce early in the season by pathnogenises - they are all female to start with then have male young and start producing sexually). Asexual reproduction is risky as if one individual plant/animal is vulnerable to a disease then all are. Interesting all this might be it has nothing to do with mammals including humans which cannot change sex

Rightsraptor · 04/08/2022 18:45

That humans can change sex.

thedancingbear · 04/08/2022 18:46

It's the fucking shoehorning into everything, and the way the anti-trans proponents seem unable to think or care about anything else.

It's the way every single thread the subject could possibly apply to gets railroaded onto this single subject. Some of us actually want to enjoy the website, and this thread was so obviously meant to be light-hearted.

And fwiw, I don't think people can change sex; the behaviour of some of the TRAs is disturbing; and I share concerns about men (which is what they are) in women's sport, some single-sex spaces etc. But I don't think it's the only fucking thing happening in the world that matters.

The thing is that it is so lovely to have a space where we can say it
