What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
Sartre · 04/08/2022 16:22

That the Queen sucks children’s blood like a vampire because she’s a shapeshifter. That Joan Rivers knew Michelle Obama was a man and was about to tell the world so was killed. That the Earth is flat and the countries we believe are at the bottom of the planet are actually at the top. The only reason we think Africa is lower down, for example, is because we view African’s as inferior. That a set of elite Jews run the world.

This was my best friend from childhood, we are no longer friends.

viques · 04/08/2022 16:22

I used to work with someone ( who is now the executive head of a consortium of schools) who told me quite seriously that since swallows never need to land apart from in their nests they don’t have legs.

waves to Gaz.

mam0918 · 04/08/2022 16:23

I encounter morons all the time who believe bizare shit.

Someone tried to tell me that the 80s was 50 years ago just the other day, I pointed out I was born in the 80s and Im not even anywhere near 40 yet, I then got told I must be wrong about both my age and the decade I was born in lol.

Yeah because that make more sense than you just being shit at maths mate.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/08/2022 16:24

A friend of mines ex husband believed he could raise the dead with his group of Christian evangelists if everyone had enough faith. So far they haven't managed it. God must not be impressed with the massive ego of this guy.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/08/2022 16:26

That boy and girl twins could be identical

Unicorns were real

(these people early 20s)

They the Covid vaccine would put a chip in your ear and was somehow managed by Bill Gates

(Hairdresser in 50s. They had it smartly enough when they realised they’d have to isolate if their kids got it)

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/08/2022 16:31

When I was little I thought that girls/women just woke up one morning and decided 'tis the day to be pregnant!' sort of like virgin birth but without the god/angel Gabriel bit (disclaimer: was brought up catholic, but obviously put my own stamp on certain of the beliefs).

My mum - possibly unconsciously - thinks that saying 'take care' in an ominous way at the end of visits/phone calls will prevent anyone in the family coming to any harm. In the same way she would tell me gloomy stories of babies who had come to grief when DS was little - as in, if I tell you it won't happen to him.

Had to tell her to stop in the end as it wasn't helping my mental state at all.

Thearex · 04/08/2022 16:33

Another one for the cure for cancer being suppressed so that Big Pharma can profit from the current treatments that are used.

The same lady also believes that the covid vaccine is being used to control the general population and if you have had the vaccine you are 'a government sheep'

My sister refused to believe that Narwhals were real- she thought I was taking the piss!

My DH believes that about dog saliva. Gross. he talks about when he had an infected toenail and essentially handed it over to the dog and the dog fixed it. Way before my time thank God.

I had two patients do that. One had used magnesium sulphate paste on it too and given a puppy diarrhoea from licking it off.

I wonder if she was, sort of anyway, very loosely, mixing up her swallows with swifts.

exceptmeandmymonkey · 04/08/2022 16:36

During lockdown, my street set up a whatsapp group and nearly everyone joined. It was my first experience getting to know my neighbours outside of the odd friendly wave.

There were tons of conspiracy theorists who believed, for example, that covid was brought from China to the US on a train marked "COVID" because Obama wanted everyone to die. I unsubscribed from the group.

I have boy/girl twins and their paediatrician told me this! She also told me that the firstborn twin is the youngest. 🤔

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/08/2022 16:42

@Crayfishforyou I wish reiki did cure prolapse. That would help my mum right now. The band thing didn't work so looks like an operation may be needed and she's worried as she's a full time carer so is putting it off.

SanFairyAnnie · 04/08/2022 16:48

That people born with a disability must have done something in a previous incarnation to deserve it.

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/08/2022 16:49

tanstaafl · 04/08/2022 11:33

Flat earth. There’s a meme with a flat earth and a cat on top.
The message says
If the earth was flat , cats would have knocked everything off by now.

Brilliant, and also undeniably true.

I'm not sure about the whole Lizard/queen theories but cats are most certainly our masters and mistresses. Unlimited biscuits and cuddles - they've thought long and hard about how to become our rulers.

MissConductUS · 04/08/2022 16:49

That birds aren't real. Apparently, they are advanced drones created by the CIA.

mam0918 · 04/08/2022 16:50

Oh one that blew my mind at the time.

My best friend studied hairdressing and her teacher made them wear long sleeves, trouses, full cover shoes and glove (I dont have an issue with the uniform just the belief as to why) because she fully believed that if cut hair landed on you it would implant into your skin, grow and you would become hairy... she taught this to the class as 'science'.

I had to explain to my friend how rejection and the immune system works and that its litrally impossible.

And pointed out if it did work bald men would just be rubbing their heads of barber shop floors lol.

MissConductUS · 04/08/2022 16:51

Oh, and they recharge their batteries by perching on power lines. Clever, that. I can't imagine why they keep emptying my bird feeder of sunflower seeds.

MumofSpud · 04/08/2022 16:51

I was once told when pregnant that wearing black clothes was bad for the baby!

KisstheTeapot14 · 04/08/2022 16:54

Fruit bees making jam and hibernating reindeer. OMG people are weird and funny.

I once knew a science teacher with this view she also refuses to go to the GP or have any vaccinations - as we would be injected with a ‘chip’ she was absolutely crazy. She refused to answer emails at home believing the internet was tracking her (maybe there is some truth in that!) but yes the world is flat and she also believed she would be taken by the ‘aliens’ as she was superior - she wrote a book about it - if I remember rightly

babyjellyfish · 04/08/2022 16:58

Beachsidesunset · 04/08/2022 10:48

That people can change their sex.

This.

TheBikiniExpert · 04/08/2022 17:01

One of my son's teachers doesn't believe in evolution- or vaccinations.

babyjellyfish · 04/08/2022 17:06

Sirius3030 · 04/08/2022 12:29

No it isn’t. There are animals that change sex. Doubtless one day biological science / genetic engineering will make it feasible in other animals. Take that how you will.

How is this relevant to humans?
