What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
Coyoacan · 04/08/2022 17:07

There are some really fucking crazy ideas out there, changing sex is tame. Dinosaurs being tame, the earth being flat, the Queen being a lizard? Nah, that’s normal. Let’s go for the trans lot again. Ya boring

Well actually, the people who believe that is possible to change sex are teaching our children that in school and confused adolescents are getting an awful lot of harmful medical treatment in the belief that they will be turned into the opposite sex. So it may be boring to you, but this is deadly serious stuff.

Whereas the rest of your list is batshit, but harmless batshit.

And for the record I am not transphobic. I am phobic of corrupt doctors, teachers and politicians and would like to protect all their victims

SweatyLaBetty · 04/08/2022 17:10

A family member 100% believes that drinking your own piss will cure you of cancer.

She believes in aliens too. And lots of conspiracy theories.

Oh one that blew my mind at the time.

My best friend studied hairdressing and her teacher made them wear long sleeves, trouses, full cover shoes and glove (I dont have an issue with the uniform just the belief as to why) because she fully believed that if cut hair landed on you it would implant into your skin, grow and you would become hairy... she taught this to the class as 'science'.

I had to explain to my friend how rejection and the immune system works and that its litrally impossible.

And pointed out if it did work bald men would just be rubbing their heads of barber shop floors lol.

@mam0918 actually there’s a grain of truth in that hairdressing story - tiny cut pieces of hair actually can implant into hairdressers’ skin! It’s called pilonidal sinus, and is found especially in the hands and between the fingers — sometimes also called barber’s disease.

It certainly doesn’t grow into new hairs, but the hair pieces can literally penetrate the skin and cause painful sores that don’t heal without a lot of treatment. It’s rare these days but still is a thing, so her anxiety about it isn’t as odd as it sounds!

Barber’s disease:

(I’m not a hairdresser, but a friend of mine had a slightly different type of pilonidal sinus which is how I learned about it!)

ilovesooty · 04/08/2022 10:52

Yes. I'm one of them

I would hardly describe it as a 'batshit' belief either.

I'm also one. The batshit belief I've encountered is that Boris Johnson would make a good PM.

My mother believes that once you get to 93 you are exempt from any kind of law. I’m not sure what she’s planning to do in her new life as a crime lord.

I love this!

A friend doesn’t believe in blue whales. Just doesn’t think something that big can exist

I once knew a science teacher with this view she also refuses to go to the GP or have any vaccinations - as we would be injected with a ‘chip’ she was absolutely crazy. She refused to answer emails at home believing the internet was tracking her (maybe there is some truth in that!) but yes the world is flat and she also believed she would be taken by the ‘aliens’ as she was superior - she wrote a book about it - if I remember rightly

My lab partner and friend on my medical course has a mentality which wierdly a lot of people in the medical field do where it 'doesnt apply to us just others'.

My friend fully supports and now works for a cervical screening company, she is very open and loud about advocating for every woman to get her smear done... however my friend has never had one herself because 'its embarrasing' and 'only my boyfriends allowed down there'.

I just dont get it.

I also knew someone who job included him leacturing people on smoking but was a heavy smoker himself and he would actually use the phase 'do as I say not as I do' and 'what I do in my private life is my business'.

Sometime being educated does mean people make smart choices.

Beekeeper here. That is sort of true. Bees take nectar from flowers, store in their stomach, then regurgitate it back in the hive

Thank you. I didn't know.

but this is a case of a 'spelk' not a transplant... the sores and absecess is exactly what I explained would happen due to the immune system but developing hairy hands like cousin IT does not.

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 04/08/2022 17:31

@MissConductUS "Birds Aren't Real" is just a parody Conspiracy Theory. Some guy invented it to make a point about how nutty conspiracy theorists are.

Tulipomania · 04/08/2022 17:32

That President Assad of Syria is a kind and gentle man who is just misunderstood by the rest of the world.

(The 'friend' who shared that view is no longer my FB friend)

Franca123 · 04/08/2022 17:33

A friend believed in indigo children - like a generation of people who have an indigo halo surrounding them. That they are chosen and unique and special. Obviously she was one of them!

But the most batshit is that men become women when they decide they are a woman.

Sunfriedegg · 04/08/2022 17:34

That defending women’s rights and knowing biological facts is transphobic.

It’s not teachers. RSE is often outsourced to private organizations, who are able to use the lessons to spread their politicized views. The government is, I believe, starting to look into this after evidence of the sort of things being taught was submitted to them.

anybloodyname · 04/08/2022 17:36

Sorry if this has been said already ! My adult - educated - sensible daughter told me back in 2020 that my Covid came from the 5 g masts that were popping up all over

Some people genuinely believe a Kier Starmer-led Labour government would actually be better than the current one.

Just because something is terrible doesn't mean an alternative is necessarily better.

Are we living in the same country?

A fishfinger would do a better job than this current government. And a much much better job than Liz Truss

The whole Illuminati stuff. If anyone mentions it tell them to stop immediately or bundle them headfirst into the nearest cupboard. It's nearly as bat shit as the powers of Aloe Vera.

To be fair, we have an Aloe Vera plant and the goo inside the leaf/frond does seem to work really well on burns. It really calms burnt skin down and stops it from hurting which I was surprised about because I thought it was an old wives tale.

GuyMontag · 04/08/2022 17:38

I used to work for a fairly sleepy local authority department in a team that had little contact with the public due to the nature of our jobs. Somehow though people had got hold of several direct dial numbers and used to ring us to complain about other random parts of the local authority. We had a few frequent fliers with unconventional but vehement beliefs - eg that Jimmy Cliff is a Nazi, that my boss was a paedophile, also some freemen on the land types. There was one guy who quite often rang me to tell me that the moon landings were faked, but I've also met people in my personal life who thought this. And I lost a couple of friends to covid conspiracy theories - they deleted anyone who didn't share their Facebook rants on the subject.

SisterRuth · 04/08/2022 17:39

The world used to be black & white and it tuned colour in the 1970s.

Coyoacan · 04/08/2022 17:39

An organised cult of teachers creating gender shifting adolescents through propaganda in schools is high on my list of “most batshit things I’ve ever heard”

Well if you want to make up straw men to fight against, whose stopping you, but the idea of an organised cult of teachers is all your own.

jetadore · 04/08/2022 17:39

The thing about the changing sex/men becoming women thing is no one actually thinks it’s true, even the people who claim it’s true it don’t really believe it, that’s why they’re so vocal and defensive about it.
