just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

that feathers are alive.

When I met my dh he didn’t believe in dinosaurs, thought they were a myth, like dragons. He grew up in a country that didn’t seem to teach much about evolution or natural history at school!

I heard a guy on the radio in debate with an oncologist. He was arguing that drinking your own urine was a more effective treatment for cancer than chemo, and said he would advise anyone in chemo to stop, and drink their own urine instead. The oncologist tried to stay calm but ended up being pretty short with him.

Some batshit beliefs are harmless. Others kill people.

My mother swearing down 100% and actually seriously believing it, that there are 13 months in a year. She said each month has 4 weeks, and 4 times 13 is 52... there are 52 weeks in a year, so there are 13 months in a year.

No amount of black and white proof, multiple calendars shown to her, and mentions of all months but one having 4 weeks and 2 or 3 extra days, would make her say or believe any different. Crazy!

Dh once taught a year 10 history class. He did a basic periods of history timeline on the board one day and one of the 14/15 year-old boys asked "So when did all the stuff in the Lord of the Rings happen then?". There was a pause while everyone waited for him to say "Nah - only kidding!". But nope... he actually meant it .

I have a lovely friend who believes all the usual conspiracy stuff like covid being man made and released on purpose and that and the vaccine are really population control, she believes in ‘putting it out to the universe’, homeopathy etc, but urine drinking is the latest crazy thing she’s come out with.
Apparently urine contains the cure or antibodies to pretty much all ailments. She was very annoyed with me when I asked why it’s expelled from the body as a waste product.
The very worst thing she’s come out with so far though is that Big Pharma are using legitimately bought ‘products’ from abortion clinics and using it in various medicines for anti ageing with full government knowledge and backing 😵‍💫

When talking about the American election (none of us were American) that Biden is an actual peadophile and Hillary is part of some child sex trafficking ring. The only response I could generate was ‘right, that sounds bad’. Until then I didn’t realise real, seemingly sane and functional people believed that kind of thing.

Well that’s just so that they can check with someone who presents convincingly as male, but is actually female, whether or not they could be pregnant.

That sign is actually sensible, and recognizes that gender identity does not trump sex I n healthcare.

There are so many people taken in by this that don't make the connection between Jews in general and the manufactured objects of their hate all "coincidentally" being Jews.

Much of the conspiracy theory rabbit hole is not openly racist or anti-Semitic and it's only when you're quite far down it that this part is made more apparent

Yeah I have a colleague who believes that. He is also a covid denier. And believes that the Jews control the world via Soros. (He does not know I am Jewish, as although we are friendly colleagues that is something I keep extremely private having suffered alot of anti semitism in the workplace in the past).

I actually really like him. He's great company and a very supportive colleague despite being utterly batshit. So I tend to just think live and let live and hope his more extreme views don't spill over into any real life consequences.
