What’s the most batshit belief you’ve ever known someone to hold

Ifyouwannabe1 · 04/08/2022 10:46

just met up with a long time friend (lovely, but utterly away with the fairies) who honestly believes the earth is flat as well as a whole host of other similarly crazy things. It got me thinking what’s the most batshit thing you’ve ever known anyone to think?

OP posts:
BaileySharp · 04/08/2022 14:30

That covid was just a conspiracy

jetadore · 04/08/2022 14:31

JemimaPuddlegoose · 04/08/2022 14:14

*Yak, not yank. Putting Yanks in coffee would be morally wrong.

Totally, why waste coffee like that?

BaileySharp · 04/08/2022 14:31

Actually the other day someone on twitter claimed men can ovulate (meaning trans women on oestrogen). Couldn't believe anyone would genuinely believe this

Redbone · 04/08/2022 14:32

Gosh I’ve got so many…
My mum used to think that by shaking up fat coke then it lost all of its calories.
A Uni friend thought that when rowers “catch a crab” they actually have a small Crustacean on the end of their oar.
I know someone who thinks that Tom Hanks is responsible for the abduction and killing of children in the US and that Covid does not exist.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/08/2022 14:32

That despite NHS waiting lists being the longest they have ever been, us paying the highest taxes in Europe, Britain having more children living in food poverty than any other European country, our fuel costs increasing to 30x what they were 3 years ago, inflation likely to reach 13% in the next year, our wages being the lowest in Europe, the government having given £400 billion pounds direct to their cronies......despite all of this there are people who believe the government have done a good job and who intend to vote Tory at the next General Election.

It is the stupidest, dimmest, most ignorant belief I have ever heard.

UWhatNow · 04/08/2022 14:32

Beachsidesunset · 04/08/2022 10:48

That people can change their sex.

Yep true batshittery currently being brainwashed to all of our children in UK schools and universities.

SecretMoomin · 04/08/2022 14:36

Dd has a friend who is starting her medical training this year, who fully believes that a man declaring they are a woman literally becomes a woman - uterus and all.
Trying to explain to her otherwise, and that being born male means you are biologically male for ever was too much for her to take, and she knew better because she’s soon to be a medical student.
The mind boggles - she’s incredibly clever, but what the hell has she been taught to believe that!

Rainbowshit · 04/08/2022 14:36

That transwomen are women.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/08/2022 14:36

Much smaller belief annoyance here.... An ex, very intelligent, well read, well educated, could NOT understand that 2 inches of water on top of rice in a wide flat dish was not the same quantity of water as 2 inches of water in a smaller taller dish. He believed that 2 inches of water, in whatever sized vessel, was the same amount. I had to demonstrate it to him with a measuring jug! The rice was measured by weight by the way - before anyone comes back to tell me about relative quantities.

Me too.
Some very ignorant minds here I’m afraid.
Sad really. But not surprising.

Or Richmal Crompton?

Wait? What?

Richmal Crompton was a woman 🤯

Well this thread has been enlightening!!

I've also met someone that believes in homeopathy. Otherwise quite rational.

I had an ex that believed in homeopathy and all things woo, whilst being a loudly patronising atheist.

He also believed that all women need to survive and stay fit and healthy is lettuce 🙄🙄 He was and still is incredibly fatphobic.

Hereforthedramaz · 04/08/2022 14:38

A very lovely friend of mine is VERY into the healing power of angels, fine her business and I can politely decline all invitations to me and family.

But she's been off to a few of the large "seminars", at one, obviously ahead of the brexit referendum, someone at the seminar gave their testimony of asking God how to vote.
Interestingly he directly replied in a dream and said to vote for brexit.

I dread to think how many people were influenced by that, especially given the people there in the first place!

Aside from that the idea that he isn't worrying about war, famine, and kids dying from horrific illnesses, instead he's sitting around answering questions about UK referendums, blackly amusing!

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/08/2022 14:39

That anyone can change sex.

SummerLobelia · 04/08/2022 14:39

This may have been said already, but I once worked with a colleague (university educated ffs) who thought that because Christmas in Australia, NZ etc was in summer that actually their Christmas was in June. So while we all call the date December 25th, at the exact same time in Australia and NZ they called it June 25th.

It took a ridiculous amount of time to get it through to her that the only difference was the season, not the actual month.

purplecorkheart · 04/08/2022 14:40

I know a person who believes the US presidential Elections were fake that Trump is actually President and has all the powers and that the secret service built a fake White House where Biden is and all the other people there are secret service who just pretend they are members of governent, staff erc.

Genuinely asking - how do humans change sex?
I mean, I know they can’t, but presumably, as that’s the basis of what posters have said, you think saying that they can’t is transphobic - why?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/08/2022 14:42

even in the very early days i distinctly remember Chris Whitty saying that it was a virus that would be with us forever

So do I, x2boys, and you're quite right that the real purpose of lockdowns was to "flatten the curves", even though opinions differ as to their effectiveness in this

However I wasn't thinking of the more reputable professional opinions, but the kind of online mania which insisted that lockdowns would eradicate Covid completely ... after all OP did ask for "batshit" beliefs!! Smile

DevilsVineBlues · 04/08/2022 14:44

That drinking your own pee (multiple times through) is good for you...

That a positive attitude increases the chances you’ll survive cancer.

In reality, attitude is irrelevant. The cancer is being fought in your body by doctors and medicine. Whether you have a sunny optimistic attitude or the opposite has absolutely zero influence on your chances.

Yes, how I managed to restrain myself from punching the co-worker who told me my husband "must have drawn his cancer to him" by having negative thoughts, I'll never know...

My NDN is a flat-earther. He likes to hold forth about it, very loudly, in the garden when he's drunk after one of their interminable parties. DH and I take our tea out there and snigger at him from behind the fence <childish>

There was a girl on my PGCE course who thought wolves were mythical creatures. Blew her mind that they were real. She also asked, without a trace of irony, what happened to the stars in the daytime. We told her God collects them up and puts them in a little box.

I think you'll find that God puts them in a BIG box.

There is quite a lot of them and they need room to twinkle.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/08/2022 14:44

Genuinely asking - how do humans change sex?

Perhaps some think that the lizards - you know, the ones running everything - come along and fiddle with their victims' DNA? Wink

Fluffymule · 04/08/2022 14:49

"Genuinely asking - how do humans change sex?"

The answer is Clownfish. Apparently.

Which I guess is another belief appropriate to this thread.

I was very much in the cautious camp, but that poster was delightfully batshit.

There was another poster who opined that even if you were already purchasing essentials you shouldn't pick up a bar of chocolate or a bottle of wine with your essentialshop as the time it took to get it was time being used for frivolous, unacceptable reasons.

I remember that, too!

I'm actually very pleased I can laugh about it now. At the time, it was just all too grim.

I don't mean saying my name on loop but peppering it through the entire conversation to give a 'personal friendly touch'...it's the one thing that will make me close the purse!
All the usual NLP crap.
As I'm well versed in it I see right through it. I don't mean it in itself is crap, but don't use it on me for persuasion!

Johnson does that. "Interesting question Laura"

I assumed it was taught in smoozing lessons at Eton
