To throw this food shopping away???

Cffee · 03/08/2022 13:54

I ordered my shopping from Morrisons via Amazon prime and one of the bags had a massive fly in it.
I know flies are everywhere etc but that's pretty gross I think? It was stuff like berries, milk, hot dogs etc but I don't have any anti bac wipes and the idea of eating food that a flies been crawling and pooping and whatever else all over seems pretty grim, Aibu tk throe ther bag of shopping away?
I do have a tendency to over react so interested what others would do
(I don't particularly have the money to be throwing bags of shopping away but k also don't want us to get sick, and I don't have any anti bac wipes in to give it a wipe over)

To throw this food shopping away???

I tend to be like this but only if it’s stuff my son will be eating. You are over-reacting but I totally understand. I think I’m diagnosed with ocd amongst all my other diagnoses (anxiety, health anxiety, Asperger’s, depression). I annoy myself!!

You know fruit is grown outside right

Precisely, just thinking about what has been casually wandering over growing fruit is enough to put you off! But we still eat it.

op you don’t need wipes to clean things, kitchen paper and water will do, and has the advantage of not wiping unhealthy chemicals over your food which probably do more harm that a random fly.

VioletInsolence · 03/08/2022 16:45

I threw away four loaves of bread because someone touched one of them with unhygienic hands (she’d been picking up dog poo in a revolting way) and I didn’t know which one has been touched. I also throw things in tetra packs away if they’re dented.

slowquickstep · 03/08/2022 16:47

You do realise don't you that fruit and veg grow outside and there is nothing to stop flies, wasps or bees landing on it or worms touching the root veg that you have been eating for years?

lillipilli · 03/08/2022 16:48

Hi OP, I just thought I’d come in with a bit of support. I have got a huge health and generalised anxiety myself and wanted to say that I understand the feelings you might be experiencing right now (and sometimes we just do continue to have them even though we know it’s irrational).

I have been in that place (and often am) many many times. So I know you are not being ridiculous and it’s the ocd / anxiety talking. So big hug from a fellow sufferer.

That said, I would not worry about the fly. And here is my reasoning. 1) if the fruit is loose, it was loose in a supermarket and a fly or someone’s hands might have touched it already. It’s gross to think about it but it’s okay, wash them with plenty of running water and dry with a clean kitchen roll/ paper towell. If you want to go further, could soak them a little bit too in salty water and then rinse.

  1. other stuff is definitely fine as it is packaged and flies / spiders are everywhere, it’s okay, don’t waste your energy wiping down the packaging.

  2. any veg that goes to be cooked - just wash as normal in clean water, the cooking process will kill anything on it

  3. I would be more worried if it was something like raw meat juices that leaked through fruit - then I would bin the fruit and any food it has spread to, but a tiny fly is not a concern.

you will be absolutely fine and ignore anyone who was mean to you here.

Chazx · 03/08/2022 16:49

I have clinically NHS diagnosed OCD and phobic/ anxiety disorder and one of my "things" is germs and contamination.

Wash the fruit and wipe down the packaging with Dettol or zoflora spary. Then for goodness sake forget about it.😙

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 03/08/2022 16:51

Are you receiving any help for your OCD?

As others have said, wash the berries. The rest will be fine.

Hope you are OK.

handbagsandholidays · 03/08/2022 16:53

Don't worry it's the OCD talking. Wash everything and then enjoy it... there's no need to throw it all away x

@Cffee Try not to worry, If you wash the fruit and veg in some water with some bicarb it'll kill all the nasties if there is any :)

RaininSummer · 03/08/2022 16:57

Pretty ridiculous overreaction OP. Anything not wrapped ot on containers can be washed.

Chazx · 03/08/2022 17:00

Sorry, I'd missed where you said you don't have any anti-bac. I'd give everything a light wash with fairy liquid and then dry/put it away.

x

pointythings · 03/08/2022 17:03

That's incredibly tough, but I hope you will be able to wash the food including the fruit and eat it anyway.

Chazx · 03/08/2022 17:03

Also, please see your GP for a referral to a therapist for the anxiety if you think it is a big issue day to day. Really do try and nip it in the bud before it takes a hold over your actions and thoughts. Having phobias and anxiety is a horrendous way to live.

Crocsandshocks · 03/08/2022 17:05

If you have a dishcloth and some hot soapy water then wipe down the outside of the packets. No need to throw it away. The fly hasn't made contact with the food

ArrangeYourFace1 · 03/08/2022 17:11

utterly unreasonable. Even if the food is not packaged.

Greydogs123 · 03/08/2022 17:20

If it makes you feel better then run a bowl of warm soapy water and wipe over all the packets with a cloth. Take the berries out of the punnet and give them a rinse - you could cook them into a compote to feel particularly reassured.
All the food will be fine to eat. I’m sorry you worry about such things, it must be hard.

Trethew · 03/08/2022 17:21

Have you ever stopped to think how many different fingers have touched your packets of food before it is delivered? And how many of those hands have been washed? And how many hands and insects have touched the fruit or veg when it was picked, and before it went into the package?

XmasElf10 · 03/08/2022 17:24

Rinse the fruit before you eat, don’t worry about the rest it’s in packaging. Throwing away would be massive overreaction.

BellePeppa · 03/08/2022 17:24

Just wash the stuff and anything in containers should be fine. Flies can get into supermarkets and what about outdoor markets?

CallOnMe · 03/08/2022 17:25

I get having anxiety but think about where this good comes from - it grows in the soil or on a bush which has flies around it all of the time as well as worms, slugs, spiders etc etc.

As long as you wash your fruit and veg then you’ll be absolutely fine.

I would be more concerned about who had touched my packaging and how dirty their hands were but if you wash your hands after touching the packets then you’ll be absolutely fine.

Purpleforthewin · 03/08/2022 17:26

Most is covered and fruit and vegetables can be washed, so no need to throw away but if ocd means you can't face eating it and you can afford not to, then pass to a good Bank or post on a local Facebook site, someone will gladly take it off your hands

Morethanthis71 · 03/08/2022 17:29

OP have you got any vinegar? The soft fruit you could put in a bowl and wash in a water/vinegar mix, then rinse under the tap, dry off and then you can rest assured that it is safe to eat.

SeenYourArse · 03/08/2022 17:31

Are you being goady on purpose?! Wasting any Food is unreasonable never mind perfectly good food that needs at most a wipe over with a cloth and a spray of kitchen or bathroom cleaner?
on another note are you seriously trying to say that you have NO clean8mg supplies at all in your home?! Eurgh perhaps they should’ve been on the shopping list too! As obviously nobody needs antibacterial wipes at all just cleaner spray and a cloth!
