To throw this food shopping away???

Cffee · 03/08/2022 13:54

I ordered my shopping from Morrisons via Amazon prime and one of the bags had a massive fly in it.
I know flies are everywhere etc but that's pretty gross I think? It was stuff like berries, milk, hot dogs etc but I don't have any anti bac wipes and the idea of eating food that a flies been crawling and pooping and whatever else all over seems pretty grim, Aibu tk throe ther bag of shopping away?
I do have a tendency to over react so interested what others would do
(I don't particularly have the money to be throwing bags of shopping away but k also don't want us to get sick, and I don't have any anti bac wipes in to give it a wipe over)

To throw this food shopping away???

Vegetables will have flies crawling all over them when they are out in the field though 😕

xogossipgirlxo · 03/08/2022 15:01

Wipe the shopping, you wash fruit and veg anyway. No big deal. Even if you don't see fly on your next shopping, you don't know if it wasn't there.

Not to mention some pickers who keep poor hygiene standards like not washing hands after the toilet.

I think some people are being a bit ( if correct) harsh , its very hard with ocd to think logically
but my DD who has intrusive ocd was taught tactics ...to think through the ocd thought and then think through the alternative narrative and then draw line under it .
so take an item out of bag..lets say an apple ( unwrapped) your ocd is saying ' it could have fly poo on it, if we eat it we will get sick, and probably be in hospital and maybe die'
wipe it with warm soapy cloth, dry it and then say ' what if we eat apple and we dont get sick...it is clean and safe' then put it in fruit bowl and move to next item.
once all done you go and find something else distracting to do so you do not ruminate over the 'but what if we eat the apple and get sick ' thoughts.

please dont waste the food, and good luck with the ocd

lurker69 · 03/08/2022 15:05

just wash it it will be fine. its just as likely to have had flies on it in the store!

Cffee · 03/08/2022 13:57

Some of it, the fruit was just in punnets with the big holes in.
I dunno if I'm being silly but I do have OCD so I definitely know that my reactions aren't always the same as what others would be

Fruit grows in fields that have flies and goodness knows what else all over them. Just wash it before you eat it. You are being ridiculous.

TheHumanSatsuma · 03/08/2022 15:07

Enormous over reaction

Simonjt · 03/08/2022 15:09

Simonjt · 03/08/2022 13:58

Fruit is famously grown in a fruit free environment…

Obviously the second fruit should have been fly 😊

FlorenceStar · 03/08/2022 15:14

I hate to break it to you, but you've eaten hundreds maybe thousands of bugs in your life and you've not died. You've consumed many things that flies have crawled all over and you've not died. You've eaten things grown in horse poop that bugs have crawled, shat, and shagged all over. You've not died.

Throwing away a whole bag of perfectly good shopping would be a ridiculous overreaction, and a selfish waste. If you don't want it, for God's sake go and give it to someone who would appreciate it instead of binning it. So many people are struggling to afford food at the moment and here you are contemplating wasting an entire bag over a fly. Must be nice to be able to afford to be so ridiculous.

TeapotTitties · 03/08/2022 15:18

FFS this place gets worse by the day.

What on earth did people do before they could ask silly questions on the internet?

As others have said, just wash the fruit and get on with it.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/08/2022 13:56

It’s a fly, what’s to stop one being in your kitchen and landing on things!? Why on Earth do you need to clean the outside of food packets.
I’m aghast at the food you’re willing to waste. Awful.

This
Exactly this

Well before they could ask questions on the internet they couldn't do a food shop on the internet so didn't have to worry about their bags being delivered with flies in them

MercurialMonday · 03/08/2022 15:23

It's the OCD messing with your head.

You can just wash it - and fruit and veg should be washed anyway unless it is says it has been. It doesn't need anti bac wipes just running under a tap with possible washing up liquid.

It grew in fields without any cover at all 🙄. You really don't want to think about what it's touched already if you're freaking out about a fly on the outside of the packaging.

I'm sure people encountered plenty of flies on the walk back from the corner shop; flies are not a new phenomenon.

Ugzbugz · 03/08/2022 15:28

Absolute madness. Everything you buy has probs been touched by a fly or someone who hasn't washed their hands after the toilet or a wank etc.

Stravaig · 03/08/2022 15:30

It's one single fly, which might have rested its delicate wee feet, antennae or mouthparts on the outside packaging for a short time. The groceries (and you) will be absolutely fine. Rinse the fresh produce, if you wish to - it probably won't be the only insect to visit them. The berries might also have been darked on, and sometimes fairies scatter dream dust as they flutter over the fruit groves. The fly was only hoping for sweet dreams tonight.

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/08/2022 15:30

Chouetted · 03/08/2022 13:57

Wash them. You need to wash the berries anyway.

This ⤴

Just wash it. get some of that stuff people use to disinfect baby things if you must - rinse it in a mild solution and then rinse in clean water.

Don't you think flies walk all over food when it is in the fields? They've probably tap-danced all over your strawberries.

If you don't want it offer it to a relative or neighbour, at worst, compost it - do NOT put it in the bin.

You know flies will likely have touched the fruit whilst it was being grown?!
Don't waste food, please.

God Almighty!

I'd forgotten about the Darking! 😳

Burn the food OP. Burn it with fire!!!

(Sorry - I couldn't resist)

i said in my post that I can't afford to be throwing it away, I'm a single parent to a disabled child I have full understanding of that. I have ocd like I said.
"must be nice" to not have a debilitating mental illness that makes you act ridiculous

Neighbours87 · 03/08/2022 15:33

You don’t need to throw anything out but if you must clean it a damp j cloth with a bit of washing up liquid will be far more effective than anti bac wipes

Montysauras · 03/08/2022 15:34

Do not throw the food away but you are also not being unreasonable to a certain extent. I also have OCD and those intrusive, deafening thoughts can be very powerful! But you will be fine and well done for not just throwing it away ❤️

WinterMusings · 03/08/2022 15:38

Therealpink · 03/08/2022 13:57

Are you 6? Come on.

@Therealpink if you can't have some tiny bit of empathy with someone who suffers from OCD & admits she might be over reacting, could you not have least just moved on? Why be nasty??

@Cffee The packaged food will be just fine. Decant it into home containers, throw the wrapping away & wash your hands. With the berries etc, surely you're washing them before you eat them anyway? (& a fly isn't your biggest problem).

it's not pleasant, at all, to find a dead fly in your shopping, but you will be fine x

DrDetriment · 03/08/2022 15:38

People are being a bit harsh here OP. You are clearly very mentally unwell to have this reaction. What treatment plan are you on for your OCD? Rather than asking MumsNet it would be better to talk through this example with your doctor or therapist.
