To throw this food shopping away???

I ordered my shopping from Morrisons via Amazon prime and one of the bags had a massive fly in it.
I know flies are everywhere etc but that's pretty gross I think? It was stuff like berries, milk, hot dogs etc but I don't have any anti bac wipes and the idea of eating food that a flies been crawling and pooping and whatever else all over seems pretty grim, Aibu tk throe ther bag of shopping away?
I do have a tendency to over react so interested what others would do
(I don't particularly have the money to be throwing bags of shopping away but k also don't want us to get sick, and I don't have any anti bac wipes in to give it a wipe over)

On a positive note, you achieved the very rare 100% agreement on voting!

OfficiallyBroken · 03/08/2022 14:21

Well done for recognising that your initial instinct wasn't necessarily rational.

I always wash fruit before eating it...because it's famously grown in environments were bugs abide plus I don't know who's touched it and what their hygiene is like

Everything else should be in containers/wrapped.

Even without the fly you were previously happy to accept shopping from an uncontrolled environment. You don't know who has handled all the tins/cartons/packets before they reached your shopping bag. You don't know what their personal hygiene is like. This was all an acceptable risk for you before ordering - a fly wandering round in your shopping bag is not going to ruin your food any more than random hand hygiene would.

Just treat your shopping as normal, you'll be OK.

It would be even better not to panic though, @Cffee as I’m sure you know that it’s better for you not to listen to the OCD.

sotired2 · 03/08/2022 14:22

Sorry in the kindest possible way due to your OCD please just put shopping away and as others of said wash the fruit.

seven201 · 03/08/2022 14:22

Not that it's necessary, but if it means you won't throw it away, you could put a little bit of washing up liquid on a sponge and give it all a wipe over.

Some of it, the fruit was just in punnets with the big holes in.
I dunno if I'm being silly but I do have OCD so I definitely know that my reactions aren't always the same as what others would be

I understand what you mean here - I don't consider myself picky, but it does freak me out to see (for example) open punnets of raspberries sold in places where there are flies around. Mushrooms, too. But honestly - I know there will have been other things fgoing on with dirt, flies, etc. that I did not see so if I buy these items, I know I'm going to have to clean them no matter what!

You did ask if you'd be unreasonable to throw the WHOLE bag away, and I'd say yes. I'd take each item case by case - even something like peaches or mushrooms, I'd probably just clean. In a colander in the sink with warm water full-strength from the spray attachment is my preferred method (you can end with cold water if you want) then pat dry with dishtowels or paper towel.

How many flies and other bugs touch your fruit/vegetable before it makes it to your home? In the field, in the packaging in store, whilst loose in the store?

HoppingPavlova · 03/08/2022 14:25

I live in a country where flies and BBQ’s go hand in hand. Flies land on the food here and there while you are not looking, you just shop them away. If we never ate food flies had been on we’d starve to death 😁.

And rodents!

Remembering39862 · 03/08/2022 14:29

I don’t have any experience of OCD, but I do have a hatred of flies that borders on a phobia, so I can guess how you might be feeling.

As others have said though, wasting food is not great. If you still aren’t comfortable keeping the food after using one of the cleaning options suggested by pp, download the Olio app, where you can offer it for free to others locally. That way, at least it won’t be wasted!

Annoyedwithmyself · 03/08/2022 14:30

Think this through- the fruit is likely to have been touched by flies whilst growing or being packed. You can rinse it.

The fly does not have access to the packaged goods inside their containers. You can rinse them off if you like, but again, flies will have touched the outside of your food containers at some point in the production and transportation process, even if not these particular ones. It has done you no harm.

Itiswasitis90 · 03/08/2022 14:35

I think people are being unfair to OP, she clearly states she as OCD.

Everything will be fine, just wash the fruit like you would normally before eating - though i doubt the fly would if fitted through the holes. Everything else is in containers so its untouched.

Littleduck80 · 03/08/2022 14:38

All this stuff will have been transported in lorries and kept in warehouses that aren't exactly medical grade up to the point of delivery to your house.

You can wash the fruit. I always do as let's face it when fruit is in the field it can have all sorts on it. So wash the fruit and the stuff in packets will be fine.

I hate flies and I've got a great big one flying round me now so I sympathise but you will be fine.

apintortwo · 03/08/2022 14:42

Can't you wipe down the packages with watered down bleach and sanitise the fruit?

pinkstripeycat · 03/08/2022 14:42

If you keep fruit in a fruit bowl flies will land on it anyway. Wash your fruit before you eat it

NCHammer2022 · 03/08/2022 14:45

Please don’t bin it. If you really can’t manage to eat it due to your OCD find a way to give it to someone else, preferably someone who needs it. What a waste.

Poppinjay · 03/08/2022 14:45

It's great that you felt able to question your intrusive thoughts and ask for the perpective of others.

It's not so great that so many people had to be rude or condescending but some people can't resist an opportunity to make themselves feel superior.

Soap kills bacteria very efficiently so you don't even need to rely on anti-bac wipes but the fly is unlikely to have left large numbers of pathogens on the packaging or the berries.

Don't throw the shopping away. Eat it as normal and then, a week from now, look back and remind yourself that you did it and nothing bad happened.

Bonjovispjs · 03/08/2022 14:46

Love that you've included a pic of the offending fly😂

Xpologog · 03/08/2022 14:50

Fruit : put water in a bowl ( large mixing bowl, fruit bowl or washing up bowl) Add a glug of vinegar ( malt or white ) or a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice. Add fruit. Leave for 5 minutes. Remove fruit and dry gently on clean tea towel or kitchen paper. Acidity of water will kill anything.
Everything else will be fine.

MagneticRubberDucks · 03/08/2022 14:51

I hate flies so would be equally grossed out.
Also still wash my shopping

berries are very easy to wash,
min a big bowl of water (or just in the sink) put a few tablespoons of white vinegar and a teaspoon of salt, tip the berries in, give them a good mix and leave to sit for 20 mins.
rinse and pat dry and they are good to go.

everything else can be washed down in hot soapy water, no need for antibac, hot soapy water will do the job.

EternalPoinsettia · 03/08/2022 14:51

Totally bonkers idea!

Derbee · 03/08/2022 14:56

Eerrrm, your fruit has had thousands of flies on it already. As for the other items, presumably Morrisons hasn’t unwrapped your hotdogs etc before delivery?!

thaegumathteth · 03/08/2022 14:58

OP I have OCD and honestly I know what it's like to not be able to remember what a rational response would be. This would be a MASSIVE over reaction.

FatBettyintheCoop · 03/08/2022 14:59

I’m sorry that you’re suffering with a horrible debilitating phobia, OP.

I strongly recommend finding a good hypnotherapist who should be able to resolve your phobia completely in one to two sessions. (Not all hypnotists are equal so you need to find one with extensive experience and an excellent reputation.)

Seriously, it will be the one thing in life that you’ll never regret doing.
