Neighbour hates our hot tub

We only bought our hot tub yesterday and set it up, kids been in it this morning from 8:45. Neighbour was round within 30 minutes she thinks it’s an absolute joke it’s too noisy she can barely hear herself think apparently. She is so much younger than us but miserable as hell!

she is quite nosey and is always on the street when any drama is going on with any of the neighbours so I kind of expected it.

of course I wouldn’t put the bubbles on at night (as much as I’d like to) so have told the kids only in the day.

we will probably only use it a few times a week.

Aibu what do I do?

Our neighbour recently got a hot tub and it's bloody awful. The hum is constant (24 hours a day) and loud enough that it's the first thing you notice if you open the back door or open a window.

We are in a terrace with very narrow back gardens so there is no escaping it.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 01/08/2022 11:08

Wtf? Why can’t kids use hot tubs? Mine love ours. Our neighbours have one and we never hear it unless they’re using but that’s not much different to them sitting and chatting in their garden. Ours is tucked round the back but dc play in it loads (11 and 14 but we’ve been here 5 years). They have so much fun essentially using it like a warm paddling pool. And as for them being tacky - I’ve decided that if people want to be snobby then fine because clearly we like tacky because tacky = fun. Obviously those who sit silently in their gardens won’t understand that. Kids playing in the garden at 8.45am in the school holidays is a good thing! Some people are such bores!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 01/08/2022 11:10

Sounds like their settings aren’t right if it’s doing that!

Hot tubs are extremely anti-social and selfish. Find other ways of entertaining yourself and your kids. They should not be allowed in houses with close neighbours.

This. Honestly, I'd be so annoyed. 8.45 is too early as well IMO.

She might move, OP. Win for you as you seem to really dislike her.

balalake · 01/08/2022 11:12

Whilst I think you should not have got a hot tub, her exaggeration of the impact makes her look stupid, regardless of her age.

Speak to her and ask if she is OK with you and other adults using it naked just to upset her even more.

AnybodyAnywhere · 01/08/2022 11:13

My neighbours have one 😒. It’s on the deck outside their patio doors, in the corner next to my fence and about 1.5 metres from my patio doors. Made sitting in my back room impossible as the hum is amplified by their decking.

I’ve had them round to hear how bad it is and they agree it’s awful but won’t do anything about it. Yes ‘it’s their garden and they can do what they want’ but I just despair of this ‘fuck the neighbours it’s all about meee’ attitude.
…..and I can’t afford to move to a detached house before anybody throws that one out…maybe those who can afford to run a hot tub and don’t give a crap about their neighbours should move to a detached house 🤷🏻‍♀️

CaptaNoctem · 01/08/2022 11:14

The only plus side I can see to the crazy increase in electricity prices is that hot tubs are going to get very expensive to run especially the cheap noisy ones.

CornishGem1975 · 01/08/2022 11:15

Sorry @brookstar but I didn't pay a fuckton of money to not be able to use my own garden however I want to. As is your right too.

I'd suggest if you can't deal with neighbours living their life and err, having fun, there's more isolated places to live.

Neighbours demands for quiet at all times is just as selfish as those making noise in my opinion.

@Thatboymum she has kids the same age we are all up early.

she doesn’t work though so I don’t understand why she is so fussed, she hasn’t got anything to get up for.

Which one of those is true then? Confused

TaxAvoidance · 01/08/2022 11:17

they need to be under constant adult supervision in a hot tub- so just calm them down a little if they get too noisy?

Er ... Confused

Brendabigbaps · 01/08/2022 11:18

I know how loud my child can be in our hot tub! YABU

TeapotTitties · 01/08/2022 11:18

@butterflied what?

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 11:19

Invite her round to sit in it

butterflied · 01/08/2022 11:19

@butterflied what?

No, I'm agreeing with your question.

Are the cheap ones louder? DP wants a hot tub, but a "solid" one that you have to install properly. He really dislikes the cheap Lay Z Spa type ones.
I still wouldn't use one myself, probably, but wouldn't mind having it if a good quality one won't hum loudly when it's on! We live rurally with no neighbours so wouldn't be bothering anyone else.

Up until that comment i was firmly on your side. You don't get to dictate how she spends her day or decide how early she or late she gets up.

DowntonCrabby · 01/08/2022 11:25

Is everyone getting ads for hot tubs on this thread? Grin

Nanny0gg · 01/08/2022 11:25

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 10:51

@ScreamingInfidelities maybe a bit shitty but it’s the truth. I could understand if she just got home from a night shift. But she’s at home all day.

I'm at home all day.

Next door's dogs bark at 7am when she lets them out.
Is it ok to wake me up because I'm at home all day? Or would it have been better if they were trained not to do that?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 01/08/2022 11:26

You sound awful. Just because your neighbour dosent work, does not mean she isnt being affected by your noisy kids at 8 45 am. Glad I dont live nextdoor to you. Hot tubs are noisy and kids will make more noise when water is around.

TeapotTitties · 01/08/2022 11:27

@butterflied ahh right 😊

minipie · 01/08/2022 11:27

Delightful attitude.

Doesn't have to be quiet at all times. And children playing (at a reasonable hour) is to be expected.

Noisy machinery (hot tubs) before 9am is anti-social

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/08/2022 11:30

Does she object to it being first thing in the morning because she’s on annual leave and wants a lie in or something?

I would probably agree a compromise if so.

Inguess they are quite noisy.

Generally I think live and let live and that people should be allowed to make noise in their gardens. Within reason - loud music and/ or sounds of argument / drunk noise all night is pretty annoying if it happens frequently.

Kids having fun during the day wouldn’t bother me.

If you have neighbours you should be considerate otherwise maybe YOU should find somewhere more isolated to live where nobody cares if you're selfish and inconsiderate.

Thanks to my neighbours selfishness we no longer have any privacy in our garden. They've redesigned their garden so that it now sits significantly higher than the rest of the gardens surrounding their house meaning none of us have any privacy at all. It means WE can't enjoy our own garden anymore because we are constantly overlooked.
It's also an eyesore and as we're in a conservation area it probably should have had planning permission.
