Neighbour hates our hot tub

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 10:08

We only bought our hot tub yesterday and set it up, kids been in it this morning from 8:45. Neighbour was round within 30 minutes she thinks it’s an absolute joke it’s too noisy she can barely hear herself think apparently. She is so much younger than us but miserable as hell!

she is quite nosey and is always on the street when any drama is going on with any of the neighbours so I kind of expected it.

of course I wouldn’t put the bubbles on at night (as much as I’d like to) so have told the kids only in the day.

we will probably only use it a few times a week.

Aibu what do I do?

If OP bought it for her kids, then it's for her kids, surely?!
Kids aren't meant to stay in hot tubs for more than 5 minutes as they can't regulate their body temperature the same as adults. Add in all the diseases you get from them they're actually not very safe for children at all. So they most certainly are not a kids toy.

Hot tubs in small gardens next to neighbours houses/gardens are very anti-social. Our neighbours had one and it made an electrical buzzing/droning noise constantly and was on power 24 hours a day. It was next to our fence and patio and their teenagers were in it often and very noisy with their mates.
The couple used it in the evenings with friends when it was hot- glasses of wine, music and loud conversation and laughing.
If it had been at the bottom of a very big garden away from the houses it would have been fine- but it wasn't and we hated it. We kept our garden doors shut because of the electrical droning/buzzing - even when the neighbours were out the droning was unbearable.
Our garden isn't tiny - about 70 ft long and 40 ft wide- but the gardens are all side to side so wherever it was it upset either us or the neighbours on the other side.
Fortunately it was a short-lived fad and they decided it was a bit naff and a waste of money and got rid of it.

8.45 is a bit early. My DH had just gone to bed after a night shift then. However, I’m afraid she will just have to suck it up. You’re allowed to live your life.

Loics · 01/08/2022 10:24

I'm not sure... My friend has one, well not a proper hot tub, one of those Lay Z Spa ones. She also has neighbours and I don't think it causes any problems. Then again, she doesn't have young kids that will be noisy in it.
They're really not my cup of tea and I wouldn't use one myself, DP wants to get one installed at some point but if they do hum/drone away when on I'm not sure I'd even like listening to our own one!

Hoppinggreen · 01/08/2022 10:24

We have one but our garden is large enough that it’s nowhere near anyone else’s house so can’t disturb the neighbours and we are careful how we use it.
They can be anti social in small gardens and if they are full of kids. They are really meant for young kids in any case
I think as long as you do your best to use it considerately it’s ok

GrazingSheep · 01/08/2022 10:27

What age are your children?

SwelegantParty · 01/08/2022 10:28

My neighbour getting a hot tub would be amongst my worst nightmares - anything that produces a constant low level hum is unbearable to me. Thankfully she's very considerate and wouldn't dream of such a thing.

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 10:28

@Goldengoosey no but I’d love one 🤣

she doesn’t work though so I don’t understand why she is so fussed, she hasn’t got anything to get up for.

To be honest I turned it off at night as I worried about the humming.

I have a hot tub, a lazy spa Hawaii. Had one for 5 years. My kids and now nephews LOVE it. I only adore the bubbles on for 2-3 minutes max, every hour or so. The temperature plummets others and then it costs £££ to heat it back up. For my DNs I keep it at 35c (30c in a heat wave) and they are allowed in it from 10-5 midweek, and 11-4 weekends. But the bubbles are only for 2-3 minutes every hour. They are NOISY. My DH and I use the hot tub in the evenings and we never use the bubbles.

To reduce the constant "hum" put Insulation under the tub and pump. This reduces costs too.

The orbit can not legitimately complain about your kids using it as a packing pool. You BOTH have rights to enjoy your garden and home. Hers doesn't trump yours any more than yours trumps hers . By asking your kids to use the bubbles sparingly you are showing consideration.

viques · 01/08/2022 10:31

Once you get your electricity bill you will be turning the hot tub into a frog pond.

CakeCrumbs44 · 01/08/2022 10:17

Maybe the neighbour could build a sound proofed shed for herself to sit in.

That would be harder to organise!

wow just because she doesn’t work doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to get woken up to kids screeching and a hot tub rumbling away before 9 in the morning. Your very inconsiderate. Use it at considerate hours and have respect for those around you and you might get on a bit better.
the novelty of it will wear off when you realise how much cleaning is required but as a side note you shouldn’t turn it off unless you want to empty and refill it because one nights enough for the thing to grow tadpoles 🤣

Branleuse · 01/08/2022 10:35

i think as long as its not on constantly then she is being unreasonable.
If she comes round again about it then just tell her that youre sorry that she finds it noisy, but you have checked and its well within accepted noise levels for daytime, so hopefully we can have a little "live and let live"

You can set the temperature on them and treat the water in the same way you treat water in a swimming pool.

They are fine.

JorisBonson · 01/08/2022 10:36

How close is the hot tub to your neighbours house?

The temperature thing is only an issue if you’ve got the hot tub set to high - 39 or something. We have a hot tub and it’s never above 37 (usually 36, in hot weather we drop it to 32/33). 37 is body temperature so if it’s fair weather and not too hot outside then it’s absolutely fine for children to be in. You don’t say that it’s unsafe for kids to be in the bath for longer than 5 mins.

What diseases do you get from them? Fine if they’re poorly maintained but they’re really easy to keep clean and the risk of disease is very low

girlmom21 · 01/08/2022 10:37

she can barely hear herself think apparently.

Tell her you're glad you've been able to help her get rid of the voices in her head

AngelsWithSilverWings · 01/08/2022 10:38

We have a hot tub but we never use the bubbles as it's so loud that you can't hear each other speak over the noise of it. I'd never have mine on at 8:45am out of courtesy to our neighbours.

The humming of the filter isn't an issue as we have placed it well away from our neighbour's house.

We barely use our's now anyway due to the cost of running it - we haven't heated it since the Easter holidays and just keep the filter running to use it as a dipping pool when the weather is hot.

SheWoreYellow · 01/08/2022 10:38

It’s not the using it that’s the main noise issue, IME, it’s the periodic humming as it heats up. This is really loud. We have loved a hot tub on holiday, but would not consider one at home as we have nowhere to put it that wouldn’t be audible from our neighbours’ garden.

I have sympathy for your neighbour I’m afraid.

FrownedUpon · 01/08/2022 10:39

Hot tubs are awful & definitely antisocial. 8.45am is also far too early. Have some consideration for your neighbours.

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 10:40

@Thatboymum she has kids the same age we are all up early.

HesterShaw1 · 01/08/2022 10:40

DP's neighbours rented one during Covid and they couldn't do their usual trips abroad. Noisy Linda would sit in it, just a few feet away through the fence at all hours of the day and night yelling into her mobile phone over the noise of the bubbles. We were about to plot murder when their contract came to an end and they resumed their cruises and trips abroad.

Just a neighbour's perspective, OP.

anniegun · 01/08/2022 10:41

I would hate a neighbour with a hot tub making noise at that time

Sswhinesthebest · 01/08/2022 10:42

It was far too early in the morning!
