Neighbour hates our hot tub

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 10:08

We only bought our hot tub yesterday and set it up, kids been in it this morning from 8:45. Neighbour was round within 30 minutes she thinks it’s an absolute joke it’s too noisy she can barely hear herself think apparently. She is so much younger than us but miserable as hell!

she is quite nosey and is always on the street when any drama is going on with any of the neighbours so I kind of expected it.

of course I wouldn’t put the bubbles on at night (as much as I’d like to) so have told the kids only in the day.

we will probably only use it a few times a week.

Aibu what do I do?

It’s usually the cheaper, inflatable/portable models that people find tacky. The built-in, permanent ones maybe not so.

No, they are all tacky. Perhaps they are ok for a weekend, but otherwise no.

They are that type of gaudy, ostentatious spending that shows a lack of class; coupled with being environmentally damaging; and showing a “suck it up neighbours” attitude by the bulk of their owners. They don’t bother me, you just know they are owned by a certain type of person.

SavingsThreads · 02/08/2022 19:55

Fair enough @Youcancallmeirrelevant! Just different quotes or something! We pay 300 just for the twice yearly service!

I couldn’t give a shite if people thought they were “tacky” your so called “tacky” is another persons gold.

The word “tacky” is so crass and such an I’ll mannered put down it makes hyacinth bouquet look common!

OP enjoy your hot tub and use it at will and ignore the miserable twats, life is far too short to think that a tub full of water is uncouth!!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 02/08/2022 20:15

Clearly they bother you, if they didn’t you would have a judgemental opinion of them or assume that only specific groups use them due to your own narrow minded opinion.

We have one, both career professionals, work long hours, rarely socialise in our home, have two teens who also rarely at home… yet we have one as our nephew needed one for his physio therapy during lock down, which our teens boys use now and then.

Our neighbours have one as they have a severely autistic child who loves water and this was the best option that could give him enjoyment during lockdown.

Keep your judgmental comments to yourself as frankly your taking out your arse!!!

InChocolateWeTrust · 02/08/2022 20:47

I never understand people who think hot tubs are noisy. I know lots of people who have them including neighbours. 80s housing estate so not massive gardens and I can barely hear it? When I can it's just a minor hum, it's very inoffensive.

The sounds of people talking/laughing etc are like any other normal garden noise.

You have to be fairly lower class to take an interest in how others spend their money.

DH family are rich as croesus, very upper class/old money and have hot tubs galore because they like them & give not one fuck what anyone else thinks.

UrsulaPandress · 02/08/2022 20:51

Hell is other people.

Vikinga · 03/08/2022 00:02

How is it tacky?? To enjoy being in the water in your garden with it bubbling up? Everyone I know from all walks of life enjoy it. One of my friends needs it as a relief for her chronically painful hips.

Loics · 03/08/2022 20:03

@Sleepregressionqueen just FYI this has been picked up by a lazy journo, article just appeared in my FB feed.

Murdoch1949 · 03/08/2022 21:24

Blimey lots of fun police on this thread. Of course your children can use the tub, my caveat would be on timing, say 11 am to 9 pm. It’s your garden, your tub, it’s up to you.

GrumpyMummy123 · 03/08/2022 21:31

I don't care about how fashionable or not hot tubs are. But God they are noisy!!!!

Our neighbors got one and it sounds like a generator is constantly going - like a really really loud fridge against our fence all day everyday. It was really really annoying and spoilt our peace.

When they/family were in it they were definitely noisier than just playing outside, lots of chatter and laughing etc. I don't mind that so much, it's more the constant hum that drove me nuts.

That's right. Your bubz, your roolz.
Who else could possibly matter?

Don’t you mean, your tubz your roolz 😉

StClare101 · 04/08/2022 03:29

I hate them because people tend to yell over the top of the noise and I really don’t want to hear entire conversations.

Purple52 · 04/08/2022 10:38

Ignore her!

but more particularly old are your kids and are the “bubbles” air or water jets?

we’ve had our hot tub long before they were fashionable (2004) and it came with a lot of safety research.

air bubbles help lower blood pressure and promote relaxation in adults - in children you can quite literally get air bubbles in the blood which can be fatal.

our children are only allowed water jets, not bubbles.

Purple52 · 04/08/2022 10:43

Sleepregressionqueen · 01/08/2022 11:32

Her kids are normally out in the garden before mine! 8:45 is fine everyone is up. It’s not the time anyways it’s the bubbles that she doesn’t like.

Invite her kids round ….. she’ll probably say no …. But then at least she’ll get constant grief about how unreasonable she it! 😂

MrsRonaldWeasley · 04/08/2022 11:07

Jeez! What’s with all the hot tub hatred?? 😂 I’m not a fan personally because I don’t like sitting in water… don’t find baths relaxing etc… but they are no more antisocial than my neighbour cutting their grass with a noisy mower or people sanding and drilling in their garden (this is my husband, sorry neighbours). As long as it’s not too early in the morning or late at night it’s just part of life living amongst other people. Live and let live!

The hot tub isn’t for your kids and they shouldn’t be playing in it.

Is it as far away from your neighbours as possible?

What if she bought it for her kids to play in it?

singingintheshower · 04/08/2022 11:26

We've had a lazy-spa hot tub for a few years now. My hubby loves using it at the weekends - he's in for hours listening to music (headphones) or reading etc/glass of wine. I find it boring tbh & too hot - we turn temp down in summer months & use as a paddling pool. He doesn't use the bubbles that much. Ours is very quiet & we don't have it turned on all the time either. Occasionally our teenage kids might use it. Not much though. I wouldn't let them use it early mornings or late at night. My neighbours have loads of family/friends round every weekend and play loud music that I can hear in my house/lots of loud talking etc when my patio doors are open. It's annoying but I wouldn't say anything. Their dog barks a bit too. Another neighbour's dogs always bark about midnight - she must let them out for their last toilet etc - that's woken me up a few times. I want to get a rescue dog in the future though so I try not to complain in case my future dog also barks a bit. Neighbours with loud music used to have a trampoline & let their kids on at 7 am (years ago) - now that was bloody annoying!! Next door also have a firepit very near my patio (thank god they haven't used it yet this year!!!) that drove me crazy during lockdown as I had to keep all my back windows & doors shut! those things are really anti social plus not good for your health at all!

Madmama10 · 04/08/2022 11:27

YANBU hot tubs can be loud with the bubbles on but you won't be having them on all the time. Kids make noise end of. Usual rules apply re unsociable hours. I have a hot tub so does my adjoining neighbour. The neighbour on the other side hires one occasionally. I don't have any issues with noise from either neighbour. However I wish the neighbour 2 doors down would finish his garden off as the noise from his angle grinder is very annoying 🤣. However I won't be complaining as you never know when I might want to make some noise!

lanthanum · 04/08/2022 11:59

www.phta.org/safety/public-safety/hot-tub-safety/

This suggests that your kids shouldn't be in it for more than 15 minutes at a time...

Flutterbybudget · 04/08/2022 13:30

Buy a drum kit and put it your garden to entertain your kids 🤷‍♀️
seriously, it’s YOUR garden, I’d put a time limit on how late the kids can play loudly in it, but other than that I’d be using it whenever I wanted to, for as long as I wanted to.
I just wish I could afford one tbh.
8am isn’t particularly early either.
pits Summer, people tend to be in their gardens later, usually with some volume of noise as well. Either music, or loud talking, my neighbours have a pond with a. fountain and that hums permanently.

bjkmummy · 04/08/2022 15:36

Nope - not unreasonable at all. My neighbours just had a weekend hire of one turn up. We are now going to have a weekend of absolute hell of the adults drunk in the garden to 4am, the kids in their rooms banging our bedroom wall - it will be hell. One night I don't mind as everyone has a celebration at some point but all our gardens back onto each other so many neighbours now in for a weekend of hell. We will get it worse due to them sharing our party wall. I've actually booked a local hotel for Sunday night so at least I can then escape. I even took a parcel in for them yesterday and no mention of hey it's the party from hell all weekend about to happen, sorry if you get disturbed. Last year's was just utterly awful hence why I am now utterly dreading the weekend ahead

Is it as far away from your neighbours as possible?

Hot tubs are regularly issued by Family Fund for disabled children as they're hugely beneficial for both physical needs and sensory. They are not just for adults at all. How rude!
