Haunted house scaring the shit out of me

Deliberately OTT title and I’m not into the paranormal but I’m getting freaked out in my house.

We’ve lived here 10 years. The house is only 20 years old. Built on marsh land.

A year or so after we moved in weird shit started happening. Stuff moving around, noises, dog going nuts in certain rooms, doors opening by themselves etc. DH got freaked out by it and started getting angry at me everytime I mentioned it. He outright refused to discuss it but admitted he had seen and heard the same stuff as me.

Then it all stopped. Nothing happened for years. All good.

Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall. The dog (different dog) flew over me barking and growling, all heckles raised. Back door was locked, there was no way anyone could have got in without me (or the dog) hearing the front door. I sent the dog around the whole house - nothing at all. I put it to the back of my mind but ever since the noises have started up again - footsteps on the first floor, doors opening and closing, muffled voices

DH has heard it too and is laughing it off saying the ghost is back but he too is randomly sending the dog into rooms and upstairs before him and telling me not to be stupid when I mention it. It’s seriously starting to freak me out.

It happened again 10 minutes ago … the sound of the floorboards creaking upstairs in the pattern of footsteps - DH looked up and muted the TV - then the sound of something being moved. I said “You’re not telling me you didn’t hear that?” And he said “I’m not getting into this shit again” and turned the TV up.

it’s a detached house, we don’t have neighbours. WTF is it??

Lots of Saxon burial grounds in the fens.
Also sacrifices to the peat bogs.

The ghost could have been there before the house was built.
Id be gridding out my garden and doing a bit of archaeology.

Please don’t do this. If an amateur destroys the context of any finds then the site is verging on useless for proper study.

The fact that it came and went, then came again after a long period of peace would comfort me in the conviction that it has a logical explanation. The different "phenomena" may have different causes. It's either a coincidence that they happen to appear at the same time, or they're linked (all caused by the same thing, such as the weather), or you're only now noticing some of them because you're already on edge and primed for fear and anxiety.

If if makes you feel better, do some little rituals. Sage is always a popular suggesting, or go through the house and politely ask for peace and quiet. If the problems persist, I'd look more closely for mundane causes.

HoundHound · 31/07/2022 23:06

You need to stop talking about it and try to ignore it. You are giving it energy which makes it stronger.

jibbe · 31/07/2022 23:10

Tell it you don’t like it and you want it to leave your house. I did this to the present house I’m living in after paranormal activity and it worked for me

Mamapep · 31/07/2022 23:10

A lot of classic haunted house ghost stories have been attributed to low level carbon monoxide poisoning causing auditory/visual/sensory hallucinations including touch and smelling phantom smells. Get it checked out/buy some carbon monoxide alarms if you don't have them already.

StoneofDestiny · 31/07/2022 23:13

There will be a logical explanation for everything. Ghosts don't exist - but imagination plays a big part in spooking us.

PixellatedPixie · 31/07/2022 23:14

No rational scientific investigation has ever found any evidence of ghosts of any kind. If you caught something unexplained on film you could become rich and famous! 🤣

But seriously, if dead people were able to haunt living people then evildoers like Nazis who escaped persecution would’ve been riddled with visitations!

How the fuck does that work?

Hopefullysoon2022 · 31/07/2022 23:16

If its come back now,has something happened to trigger it.
Death,babies.
But stop talking about it in the house,it gives it strength.

Best thing to do is get the priest in,bless it and hopefully thats the end of it.

I’m not an “amateur”?!

"Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall."

If you were looking at your phone how did you see something behind you? Had you heard something that made you look round at that moment?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/07/2022 23:20

If the dog is going bonkers it's because it can hear rats/movie in the walls and attic. Our cat goes loopy when he hears one. It's been very dry recently,if you're on marsh land the house will be settling.

are you in the north west ? Small city ?

CarrieMoonbeams · 31/07/2022 23:24

I find these threads fascinating, because unless you've experienced something like this yourself it's so easy to exclaim "bullshit"!

And then something similar happens to you, and you'll be trying to figure out a logical explanation, and when you try to discuss it with other people there are always some who say "bullshit"!

I'm the first to admit that although I'm a bit of an old hippie, I was always sceptical around ghost stories ... until it happened to me.

OP all I can tell you is what worked for me. I said out loud "Yes, very funny, thank you, but can you please stop now, I don't like it." It did stop, mostly.

CounsellorTroi · 31/07/2022 23:25

This is something else. I’m willing to accept it could be subsidence and will mention that to DH but it doesn’t explain the shadows and voices. Now stuff being moved around.

You didn’t mention voices in your OP or updates. Can you elaborate?

IrisVersicolor · 31/07/2022 23:29

So you need to find a ghost healer - someone who can figure out the source/s of the disturbance and release it. You can have the house blessed if you’re religious but it doesn’t tend to make any difference. Generally church don’t know they’re doing beyond invoking their faith. Sometimes they can make it worse.

Try and ignore it and not to give it too much energy - entities can feed off your energy.

Most of all - don’t be scared - it’s annoying, but it’s not dangerous.

Apologies, I see you did mention them.

For anyone laughing at me - I didn’t immediately get on the phone to ghost busters as soon as I heard a creepy noise! I’m not a “woo” type person and I’m not easily spooked. Christ I’ve stayed in “haunted” castles before today, turned the lights out at night, put weird noises down to the fact that the building is 100s of years old and slept soundly.

This is something else. I’m willing to accept it could be subsidence and will mention that to DH but it doesn’t explain the shadows and voices. Now stuff being moved around.

You say the previous owner dropped the price and then accepted lower etc - could it be he had trouble selling because of the clay and flooding issues?
It actually could just be down to this as previous posters have said with the heat lately too?
If it is something more spooky try saying out loud every time you hear or see something etc “please don’t do this again” or “you don’t live here, please move on” even just “not now”! Whatever you feel more comfortable saying - but the more you say it out loud the easier it will become AND more normal hence less scary. IF it is anything spooky, while unnerving they really can’t hurt you x It’s strange that you’ve had nothing for so long and then it’s started again so has anything changed recently before it started again?

PixieLaLa · 31/07/2022 23:32

Burn sage, lots of!

Hollywolly1 · 31/07/2022 23:35

I wonder could your house be on a sink hole

girljulian · 31/07/2022 23:38

I grew up in a haunted house. It didn't bother us hugely. We lived in a very rural area of the north east where belief in ghosts was more the norm than not and they were essentially considered a pest, like having rats. There was an old man who sometimes came into my bedroom; he would go away if I told him to. However, there were also mice that skittered along the skirting boards in the dark and they did not go away! The thing you mention, about seeing something out of the corner of your eye and hearing it touch the walls, I'd really be thinking about mice or rats.

If it is ghosts, tell them to go away.

CbaThinkingOfAUsername · 31/07/2022 23:38

I'd be putting it on the market and staying elsewhere till it was sold and I'd found somewhere else.

Infrasound - sound below the limit of human hearing, which can be felt but not heard, can also do this.
