Haunted house scaring the shit out of me

Deliberately OTT title and I’m not into the paranormal but I’m getting freaked out in my house.

We’ve lived here 10 years. The house is only 20 years old. Built on marsh land.

A year or so after we moved in weird shit started happening. Stuff moving around, noises, dog going nuts in certain rooms, doors opening by themselves etc. DH got freaked out by it and started getting angry at me everytime I mentioned it. He outright refused to discuss it but admitted he had seen and heard the same stuff as me.

Then it all stopped. Nothing happened for years. All good.

Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall. The dog (different dog) flew over me barking and growling, all heckles raised. Back door was locked, there was no way anyone could have got in without me (or the dog) hearing the front door. I sent the dog around the whole house - nothing at all. I put it to the back of my mind but ever since the noises have started up again - footsteps on the first floor, doors opening and closing, muffled voices

DH has heard it too and is laughing it off saying the ghost is back but he too is randomly sending the dog into rooms and upstairs before him and telling me not to be stupid when I mention it. It’s seriously starting to freak me out.

It happened again 10 minutes ago … the sound of the floorboards creaking upstairs in the pattern of footsteps - DH looked up and muted the TV - then the sound of something being moved. I said “You’re not telling me you didn’t hear that?” And he said “I’m not getting into this shit again” and turned the TV up.

it’s a detached house, we don’t have neighbours. WTF is it??

We had similar in a house lived in when I was 8 absolutely new build, we were first in it, I am even 25+ years later still convinced it was haunted.

Derrymum123 · 31/07/2022 22:43

Just go into the room and ask it to move on. I had a house like this in the past. Acknowledge them and ask them to leave. They do. Failing that, ask your local priest to bless the house.

ConfusedLove · 31/07/2022 22:44

I’d be gone like a skateboard on a hill

I hate to break this to you, but someone is living in your house.

An alive someone.

There is literally nowhere for them to hide. If they were here, the dog would flush them out, believe me.

But wouldn’t all the houses around here be experiencing the same thing? They were all built at the same time

Possibly. But maybe not everyone has immediately scared themselves to death by thinking it’s a haunting!

Mice?

Or, Christopher Ecclestone?

Gas or subsidence, I too would get a building expert, sounds pretty terrible building

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 31/07/2022 22:44

Contact your local Church of England vicar. Every diocese has somebody who deals with these matters and they will help you. It is less uncommon than you think, I was told when enquiring for a friend.

Good luck.

I wonder if it may be interesting to.. or worth having a look into the land / areas history?

It was marshland/farmland used by monks. Sheep farming I believe. An old monastery was around here but not where we are … about 20 minute walk away

set security cameras in the hall & an upstairs room
check for mice / rats / birds in the attic etc.
subsidence and movement of the clay is very likely
remember ghosts do not exist.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 31/07/2022 22:48

I would be trying to communicate with them. You know the whole "show me that you're there, make a noise". But then I don't have to live in the house afterwards like you do 😙Dh is terrified of ghosts so if this happened in our house he'd move out immediately.

SofiaSoFar · 31/07/2022 22:48

There's no such thing as 'haunted', FFS!

The OP is definitely experiencing paranormal activity in her property. It exists 👍🏻

And the earth is flat, too.

You’ve not witnessed it with your own eyes I’m assuming? Which is fine, but I have.. all of my family members have and my friends when visiting. Just because you have never witnessed it - doesn’t mean it didn’t happen hun 😂

Anywhereelse · 31/07/2022 22:52

I’d contact a local church and see if a priest can visit and bless the house etc. Also get a surveyor to assess the property and land.

I’m on the fence about the supernatural but I’d be very unnerved by this. I can’t see how subsidence can cause moving shadows, doors opening and closing, and your dogs going mad over a pidgeon’s ‘footsteps.’

Kinell. It's Derek Acora.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 31/07/2022 22:53

My grandparents house was like this. It became very very creepy to be in. He worked for a building firm who built the whole estate and there'd been nothing but fields there before.
It was weird from the start. My mum was terrified growing up in that house - the sound of coins being tapped on her bedroom window, the feeling of being pushed down the stairs so she'd have to run to escape, 'people' leaning over her in the night. When she met my dad the doors would slam in his face if he entered the house.
I distinctly remember the pictures swaying on the walls when we went over to clear out the house after my grandparents had died. My mum couldn't sell that place fast enough. It was a beautiful large detached house with the most wonderful garden - shame it was creepy as fuck.

We had trouble in some of our other houses too. I've lived in mine about 18mths and things have started to happen recently :(

elizabethdraper · 31/07/2022 22:55

Get carbon monoxide alarms in all rooms

NrlySp · 31/07/2022 22:56

Are you Catholic? Ask your local priest to bless your house. Give him dinner and a donation (£30 should do it) in return

Goawayghosts · 31/07/2022 22:57

For anyone laughing at me - I didn’t immediately get on the phone to ghost busters as soon as I heard a creepy noise! I’m not a “woo” type person and I’m not easily spooked. Christ I’ve stayed in “haunted” castles before today, turned the lights out at night, put weird noises down to the fact that the building is 100s of years old and slept soundly.

This is something else. I’m willing to accept it could be subsidence and will mention that to DH but it doesn’t explain the shadows and voices. Now stuff being moved around.

Hallamus · 31/07/2022 22:58

I honestly wouldn't 100% rule out something "paranormal" not necessarily in the sense of a soul haunting the place but a kind of energy echo maybe...I'm not a credulous person in most ways but I do wonder sometimes if this happens.

If your DH won't discuss it with you I would be starting a conversation about moving.

Hallamus · 31/07/2022 22:59

I think it's telling that he is not saying 'old house, creaks happen' but is getting annoyed and defensive and doesn't want to talk about it. If you're both getting that vibe it's different from just one of you.

NippyWoowoo · 31/07/2022 23:03

Ghosts, like the Easter bunny, do not exist.

There will be a logical explanation for this.
