Haunted house scaring the shit out of me

Deliberately OTT title and I’m not into the paranormal but I’m getting freaked out in my house.

We’ve lived here 10 years. The house is only 20 years old. Built on marsh land.

A year or so after we moved in weird shit started happening. Stuff moving around, noises, dog going nuts in certain rooms, doors opening by themselves etc. DH got freaked out by it and started getting angry at me everytime I mentioned it. He outright refused to discuss it but admitted he had seen and heard the same stuff as me.

Then it all stopped. Nothing happened for years. All good.

Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall. The dog (different dog) flew over me barking and growling, all heckles raised. Back door was locked, there was no way anyone could have got in without me (or the dog) hearing the front door. I sent the dog around the whole house - nothing at all. I put it to the back of my mind but ever since the noises have started up again - footsteps on the first floor, doors opening and closing, muffled voices

DH has heard it too and is laughing it off saying the ghost is back but he too is randomly sending the dog into rooms and upstairs before him and telling me not to be stupid when I mention it. It’s seriously starting to freak me out.

It happened again 10 minutes ago … the sound of the floorboards creaking upstairs in the pattern of footsteps - DH looked up and muted the TV - then the sound of something being moved. I said “You’re not telling me you didn’t hear that?” And he said “I’m not getting into this shit again” and turned the TV up.

it’s a detached house, we don’t have neighbours. WTF is it??

Wow …

Can I just say I started this thread knowing that there was more than likely a rational explanation to what was happening and wondered if anyone had any ideas as the thought of the paranormal - however unlikely was starting to scare me.

I did NOT expect to kick off world war 3!! Christ what is wrong with some of you? Getting nasty and calling each other names!?

Ill have to admit I have not been able to even read the full thread as the vast majority of it is just people arguing amongst themselves 😞 so I do apologise if I’ve missed any ones genuine advice.

it’s definitely not rats of mice. I’ve lived with mice before and I know the signs. Rats would make way more noise. I also know the sound of birds in the walls/loft etc as we do get that sometimes too and would recognise it.

We have a working tested carbon monoxide tester.

Both our B12s are on the lower end of normal.

Have read some posts in the local network Facebook page and lots of people are swearing the whole area is haunted (as I post this I just heard a bang upstairs, Dog looked up at the ceiling, did a little growl but that’s it lol). Some people have scarier stories than mine.

Im going to assume it’s something to do with the weather for now.

Finally … to those being nasty about believers … do you also call religious folk batshit crazy etc because there has never been proof of god?)

Perhaps the sceptics could give me an explanation for this please?

I bought a new shade for the landing light above the stairs. It was the sort where you have to unscrew the bulb holder, put the metal ring in, screw the bulb holder back in and then replace the bulb.

I'd barely got downstairs before the lampshade was thrown at me violently, missing me by inches and shattering around me. The bulb was still in the bulb holder which was still screwed in the light fitting. The metal part of the shade that I had put behind the bulb holder was at my feet completely undamaged.

I have never been able to explain that one!

Mate, I didn't call anybody names. I was called names actually but don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

To answer your question, yes whatever I said about "believers" also applies to religious folks.

Why are you assuming I was referring to you?? I don’t know who posted what as I stopped reading them all after a while! All I saw was a lot of arguing back and forth, some name calling, some nasty comments - I have no idea who said what.

On threads like these, the evangelical nature of the skeptics really stands out. As Keats put it: "Philosophy will clip an Angel's wings,
Conquer all mysteries by rule and line,
Empty the haunted air, and gnomèd mine—
Unweave a rainbow"

The rational, empirical sort empty the world of magic. The vehemence with which the atheists and skeptics foam about the events describes is odd. Who cares what people think? So long as they try the rational solutions first, who cares whether the events remain unexplained and scary?

Personally, I am agnostic: open to possibilities and most of all, fond of a good scary story.

The evangelical nature of the sceptic and yet we have not been the ones throwing out insults on these threads. Like you just did.

Was the shade made of glass? If so could it have spontaneously shattered rather than being thrown at you?

You mean you weren't driven off your own thread by the nasty sceptics as was suggested earlier?

Finally … to those being nasty about believers … do you also call religious folk batshit crazy etc because there has never been proof of god?)

What about those being nasty about non-believers? That we are taking the magic out the world, that we are ignorant, that we are the same as people who don't believe rape victims?

BeethovenNinth · 02/08/2022 14:06

Have you recently renovated/moved furniture to unsettle things?!

Yes I was driven off the thread, it all descended into chaos and was no longer of any help to me. Which is a shame as a few people were trying to give good advice.

and yes the nastiness goes both ways. I havnt even read the full thread so I don’t know who said what. All I know is it turned into a scrap which wasn’t my intention

OP… just to say (in case you missed my posts) get a natural gas detector. co2 monitors won’t detect natural gas leaks, which can define an issue with marshland. My brother and his wife went through something similar.

TheVanguardSix · 02/08/2022 15:00

Define? That should read definitely be an issue.

No it was metal and perspex.

Spontaneous shattering doesn't explain how the central metal ring released itself from a screwed closed bulb holder and passed over a bulb that was a wider diameter than it was without any damage to the ring

False memory? You genuinely believe you had fixed it in place, you visually remember it, yet you didn't actually do it.

This sort of thing happens all the time, there are lots of rational explanations other that ghosts. Maybe there was a timeslip, maybe a clash between dimensions, something as simple as some blue light bouncing off a strut.

Fully understand. Most posts are great when they first hit the screen. For about 5 pages at most. I'm so sorry it all put you off reading. :-(

That's a bit grasping at straws!

No I definitely did it.

No one was ever come up with a non paranormal explanation. That was the second incident that happened to me personally at that spot in the house. There is no rational explanation of for that one either.

I have never been able to explain that one!

If this happened to me I would think it was really weird. I would probably obsess about it for a few days telling everybody I know about it. I wouldn't think it was woo stuff though.

The thing is woo doesn't explain anything either. You can scroll through this thread and see woo proponents make all sorts of claims. Ghosts do this, ghosts never do that, there are two types of ghosts no actually ghosts aren't dead people but demons/angels. There is a lot of authoritative posts making utterly contradictory claims. There are no rules, none of it means anything, the rules are whichever explanation you like best, it's fine to change an explanation slightly if it's more to your liking. Chinese whispers are encouraged.

You go off this thread and onto the wider net and it's the same thing and that's because there are very few credible sources for this stuff.

Okay so why no credible sources? Woo believers seem to agree that buildings can be haunted, the hauntings are observable and therefore measurable. Why is nobody credible recording them? Well actually my understanding is that they have but found nothing and mainly lost interest.

TowelChair · 02/08/2022 17:36

Sad that the thread devolved into people getting shitty with each other.

Hate when lazy journalists pick up easy fodder from MN. Maybe we all need to write I HATE LAZY JOURNALISM… BUGGER OFF DAILY MAIL ET AL at the top of each post 😂

bunsnroses. People, be they witches or not were never “hung” - they were HANGED. Only pictures and meat are ever hung.

@crwnhgow The evangelical nature of the sceptic and yet we have not been the ones throwing out insults on these threads. Like you just did.

I notice you enjoy taking offence.

Bandying around words like "batshit" for those who've experienced strange events is literally calling them mad. Dismissing them as insane. If anyone did that to you, then you'd have cause for offence. 😂

No I don't enjoy taking offense. I'm just pointing out that people have been far more hostile to people who don't believe there can only be a supernatural explanation for this than vice versa.
