Haunted house scaring the shit out of me

Deliberately OTT title and I’m not into the paranormal but I’m getting freaked out in my house.

We’ve lived here 10 years. The house is only 20 years old. Built on marsh land.

A year or so after we moved in weird shit started happening. Stuff moving around, noises, dog going nuts in certain rooms, doors opening by themselves etc. DH got freaked out by it and started getting angry at me everytime I mentioned it. He outright refused to discuss it but admitted he had seen and heard the same stuff as me.

Then it all stopped. Nothing happened for years. All good.

Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall. The dog (different dog) flew over me barking and growling, all heckles raised. Back door was locked, there was no way anyone could have got in without me (or the dog) hearing the front door. I sent the dog around the whole house - nothing at all. I put it to the back of my mind but ever since the noises have started up again - footsteps on the first floor, doors opening and closing, muffled voices

DH has heard it too and is laughing it off saying the ghost is back but he too is randomly sending the dog into rooms and upstairs before him and telling me not to be stupid when I mention it. It’s seriously starting to freak me out.

It happened again 10 minutes ago … the sound of the floorboards creaking upstairs in the pattern of footsteps - DH looked up and muted the TV - then the sound of something being moved. I said “You’re not telling me you didn’t hear that?” And he said “I’m not getting into this shit again” and turned the TV up.

it’s a detached house, we don’t have neighbours. WTF is it??

a dog flew over you? change your meds if you're seeing things or suffering from memory loss.

about creaking floorboards, perfectly normal in the evenings temperature changes wood expands, contracts thus making the sounds you heard.

was your house built on an old indian burial ground?

PixellatedPixie · 01/08/2022 10:23

I do agree that we don’t know about everything in the universe. There are probably other intelligent life forms out there but ghosts as described by people on this thread are a very old European myth that follow all the rules laid out by our culture. If you went to other parts of the world the rules would be different. The problem also is that many of the rules contradict each other. Why would someone get a Catholic priest to do an exorcism if they aren’t Catholic for instance? If they really believed that Catholic priests can communicate with spirits then do they themselves follow Catholicism by the absolute book? Where are the spirits of all the children who were abused and murdered by the Catholic Church? Do they really “listen” and obey the Catholic priests. It’s all a fairytale.

As I said, scariest part here is my logical partner who does not believe in the paranormal is starting to be freaked out. Only yesterday we were sat downstairs and three glasses on back of upstairs unit smashed, no idea how they moved.

There are many boring and mundane explanations for spontaneous glass breakage including thermal stresses and flaws in the manufacture of the glass.

Wasn’t there a museum somewhere that has a vase in a glass case that would move every night so they set up a camera etc? It turned out it was something like the vibrations caused by roadworks or some such thing.

ScentOfSawdust · 01/08/2022 10:25

I’d be more worried that your house was built on marshland. I’m surprised you could get insurance

Nah @Miffee I've changed my mind. I'd hate to be so ridiculously closed minded to the point I make myself look ignorant & basically just bitter. I mean, WTAF would it be so important to you to shoot down others experiences as didn't happen, just because you've chosen not to believe or haven't had such experiences. That's plain weird

Trouble is, we have no proof that ghosts don’t exist. We can prove things do exist, but it’s a lot harder to prove that anything doesn’t. It’s just a belief, either way. The evidence of PO’s eyes and ears is suggesting that they do. Simply making the statement “Ghosts don’t exist”, with no evidence to back it, isn’t scientific.

You can't just say 'we have no proof they don't exist' like it could be 50/50. And there is massive evidence which points to them not existing and nothing in favour of them existing other than the testimonies of fallible people. We don't know everything about reality but any new theory needs to agree with the current laws established.

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 10:26

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:06

You're right, but Isn't that just auditory & vibrational @CounsellorTroi ?

Infrasound? No, it can make you see shadows out of the corner of your eye too. And induce a feeling of fear and unease.

FlippinOmicron · 01/08/2022 10:26

Some years back on Mumsnet there was a thread about noises a poster heard in her home. She was scared.
Eventually the thread ended because it became a matter for the police. I sometimes think of that poster and wonder what the outcome was. Was there someone living in their attic ?

That is interesting actually. Would that also explain though how they moved from back of unit to middle of kitchen floor. That is the bit that scared me as nothing I googled seemed to explain that. Would love a rational explanation honestly as I hate being here alone at night when partner is working.

Thatswhyimacat · 01/08/2022 10:29

As a PP said, ghosts as we describe them actually cannot exist unless the laws of physics are wrong. I'm sorry, but your senses are evidence of absolutely nothing, human perception is notoriously unreliable, in fact our brains are actively designed to make us see things that aren't there. Think of false memories, think of sleep paralysis, think of seeing faces in a piece of toast, all things that once upon a time were thought to be woo until we worked out the perfectly rational explanation for them.

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:29

@PixellatedPixie catholic priests use accredited spiritual mediums experienced in exorcism in these circumstances. The exorcist is a load of bollocks. The base theory & resolution is actually the same the world over. All roads lead to heaven as my DM would say

Justkidding55 · 01/08/2022 10:30

The subsidence is an interesting theory. The only thing is you’d see cracks, doors would start to not fit in the frames properly and skirting board would start looking as if they don’t reach the floor ect. But the timing is definitely interesting that we’ve had such extreme weather just as it’s come back. I’d definitely per-sue this line of enquiry.

I did building works in my house when we moved in and three smells started to appear that came and went in seconds. A cigarette smell (non smoking household) and a old lady perfume smell in the attic which was sons room and I found more creepy than the cigarette smell. The other smell was this rotten smell as we split the bathroom into two. We had three plumbers out and none could smell it or find a reason for it but they even refitted a part in the connecting pipes that was supposed to stop any backflow smells. Was still there.
the woman before me had lived there 38 years and the people before her about 20 apparently and it had a very lovely energy in the house when I veiwed it. Everyone was clearly happy there.

anyway I went around the house and told the ghosts who I was and that I loved the house and that we were building another bathroom blah blah as we had kids ect ect and I meant no harm. I just asked it/them not to disturb or scare me or the kids. It gradually faded in a few days.

the only thing now is that when I met my new partner we were sitting there in the evening and
He suddenly said he could smell cigarettes. I couldn’t smell it at all! He wasn’t scared though at all.. just found it weird. He now smells it occasionally when he’s here but I or my kids never do. I think it’s just keeping an eye on who is coming to the house and I find it quite comforting.

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 10:30

If ghosts could walk through walls, how would they be able to stand/walk on solid floors/move solid objects? Doesn’t make sense.

PriamFarrl · 01/08/2022 10:30

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 10:09

On the one occasion I saw something that would be considered woo on here - a closed door leading to another room rattling - the dog was completely unfazed. Hadn’t seemed to notice anything out of the ordinary.

I grew up in a house with a ghost and a fuck ton of cats. Not one cat gave a single shite about the ghost.

Its not weird at all. What's weird is hearing some glass break behind you, or hearing some noises upstairs, or finding something that wasn't where you thought you'd left it, and thinking it's a frikin ghost that did it. Then you expect other people to take you seriously.

You are being 'shot down' because you are encouraging others to be delusional rather than rational.

Justkidding55 · 01/08/2022 10:35

@CounsellorTroi

Spirits are energy. As we all are. there are many different forms of energy and many ways to use energy. Energy can be converted into force, sound, light.. all sorts.

Wrt the laws of physics - science is a method of analysing the phenomenal world - it has nothing to say about the noumenal world.

As I have already said the whole spiritualist movement was started by a couple of young women who were faking it all. It all got out of hand and by the time they confessed to it all being made up it had gone too far.

Thatswhyimacat · 01/08/2022 10:37

If Isaac Newton was a ghost he'd be haunting you all so badly right now.

If ghosts could walk through walls, how would they be able to stand/walk on solid floors/move solid objects? Doesn’t make sense.

The idea with ghosts walking through walls is that those walls weren’t there when they were alive. They are following routes that they took in life.

That's awfully convenient. So if ghosts are not of the senses, how are you seeing them and how are they smashing shit up?

Your posts really are spiteful. Why the outpouring of venom towards somebody who holds a different opinion to you on a subject that is (1) known to be controversial and (2) not exactly the most important issue that the human race is facing right now? You must be very invested in paranormal stuff being real if you are resorting to personal attacks.

The umbrella term “ghosts” actually covers a wide range of phenomena.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/08/2022 10:39

I lived in a flat that had odd things happen, but with hindsight I am certain we had CO1 poisoning. I would get terrible headaches, especially when I sat near the gas fire. Flatmate and I were very young, and carbon monoxide wasn’t as well publicised as it is now. I feel lucky not to have died !
However I have also stayed in a house where we could al hear footsteps, and loud banging upstairs, and where things disappeared and then reappeared. I wasn’t there long, as part of a group who all experienced things and who were all sceptics . I can’t explain what happened in any rational way .

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:40

Infrasound? No, it can make you see shadows out of the corner of your eye too. And induce a feeling of fear and unease.

Interesting, I'll have to look into that a bit more. I do agree many hauntings have very rational explanations & that's even where a good spiritual medium/exorcist will start first

Fear & unease hasn't been my experience of woo though, it's a difficult to describe sensation that only comes with genuine "woo" I kind of know my shadow people & flies weren't woo as it felt very different & it turned out to be medical & went with treatment.

Footless centurions marching through a cellar wall on the other hand I've experienced those buggers & they have legs, but no feet had me feeling it & then some, my hair literally stood on end for the few seconds it lasted
