Haunted house scaring the shit out of me

Deliberately OTT title and I’m not into the paranormal but I’m getting freaked out in my house.

We’ve lived here 10 years. The house is only 20 years old. Built on marsh land.

A year or so after we moved in weird shit started happening. Stuff moving around, noises, dog going nuts in certain rooms, doors opening by themselves etc. DH got freaked out by it and started getting angry at me everytime I mentioned it. He outright refused to discuss it but admitted he had seen and heard the same stuff as me.

Then it all stopped. Nothing happened for years. All good.

Then, a couple of weeks ago I was messing on my phone and behind me I saw a shadow go past in the hallway out of the corner of my eye and heard it brush along the wall. The dog (different dog) flew over me barking and growling, all heckles raised. Back door was locked, there was no way anyone could have got in without me (or the dog) hearing the front door. I sent the dog around the whole house - nothing at all. I put it to the back of my mind but ever since the noises have started up again - footsteps on the first floor, doors opening and closing, muffled voices

DH has heard it too and is laughing it off saying the ghost is back but he too is randomly sending the dog into rooms and upstairs before him and telling me not to be stupid when I mention it. It’s seriously starting to freak me out.

It happened again 10 minutes ago … the sound of the floorboards creaking upstairs in the pattern of footsteps - DH looked up and muted the TV - then the sound of something being moved. I said “You’re not telling me you didn’t hear that?” And he said “I’m not getting into this shit again” and turned the TV up.

it’s a detached house, we don’t have neighbours. WTF is it??

I think you have an infestation of rats. They can grow to large proportions and make the kind of noises you describe. It would also explain the way the dog reacts.

I would be contacting rentokil before an exorcist.

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 09:54

If just you you sees the shadow people... get your B12 checked, these types of peripheral vision hallucinations are a symptom

These sorts of hallucinations cab also be induced by infrasound as I mentioned above. There is a lot we don’t know about how environmental factors affect our perceptions.

I am usually a very scientific factual person, but this would freak me out.

I do believe that 'things' can linger. I viewed a house before, and instantly had a bad vibe, filming the house tour for my reference, downstairs toilet felt freezing cold in the middle of the summer. My DP would not go into the sittign room as she was randomly freaked out, didn't know why, and left the house.

On replaying the video back, when I filmed the downstairs toilet, there was a shadow in the mirror and the recording went fuzzy.

Literally having goosebumps typing this.

Was a house from a deceased estate, and it is on my dog walk, been sold 4 times since we viewed it 6 years ago.

This is the only time I have eperienced a feeling outisde of explanation, and opened my mind to it.

So, personally OP I would be gone!

As I said, scariest part here is my logical partner who does not believe in the paranormal is starting to be freaked out. Only yesterday we were sat downstairs and three glasses on back of upstairs unit smashed, no idea how they moved.

There are many boring and mundane explanations for spontaneous glass breakage including thermal stresses and flaws in the manufacture of the glass.

You'll probably no longer have the video but if you upload it I could probably give you an explanation.

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:06

You're right, but Isn't that just auditory & vibrational @CounsellorTroi ?

MangoBiscuit · 01/08/2022 10:06

Sounds more like the house shifting/settling. We're often very good at linking together random occurences and spotting patterns that aren't actually there, so the shadow across the wall that set off the dog could have been a flying insect, and you startling made the dogs reaction worse.

But cover all your bases. Sit quietly one evening, and say out loud that it's scaring you and could it please stop and leave you alone. Then if it is a ghost, it should do just that. But it should also help settle your mind a bit so you don't startle as much at the house creaking / insects setting the dog off / whatever else.

SammySammySammytheBetterfly · 01/08/2022 10:07

@leisurelystroll

There are many instances of hauntings that only stopped once the house was excersised and blessed by a Catholic priest sanctioned to perform those duties. Judge if you will but it worked. Look at the Smurl family.

I would recommend a Catholic priest even though they’re rarer in England because the Church of England has strayed pretty far from Its origins, especially with its priests. I don’t think it would have the power to perform something like that.

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 10:09

Thatswhyimacat · 01/08/2022 08:58

I love the idea in these scenarios that a pet is somehow proof of a haunting.

You, an intelligent human, have been spooked by an unknown shadow or a mysterious creaky noise, yet a dog barking is somehow proof that it's definitely a ghost and there's no way the dog is also just reacting to a random noise it heard. A cat will chase a laser pointer across a room trying to catch it and yet we're like oh, the cat is definitely seeing something that we can't. It's so funny.

On the one occasion I saw something that would be considered woo on here - a closed door leading to another room rattling - the dog was completely unfazed. Hadn’t seemed to notice anything out of the ordinary.

Vincitveritas · 01/08/2022 10:09

@Iamthewombat Good old Derek 😆

@Elphame My thoughts exactly 😬

dottymac · 01/08/2022 10:09

😱 oh sh#te I'd be out of there quick smart, your description of Shadows behind you and something scraping along the wall made my stomach somersault 🤮 not today Satan.

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:10

@SammySammySammytheBetterfly

You don't need a Catholic priest, any faith will do. They often work with spiritualists in these situations anyway. I knew someone who did this & worked with various churches around london many times

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 01/08/2022 10:13

It really pisses me off when people dismiss others experiences by saying "ghosts don't exist". How the hell can you be so sure? Why so dismissive of people who've seen a group of Roman soldiers marching at knee level (what was the old Roman road level), or seen a Cavalier appear in a pub as though real and then vanish, or - my relative - during WW2 saw, in his bedroom, the previous tenant of his flat, who had been killed by a bomb up the road two weeks before? (He didn't know this woman but described her appearance and flowery apron to the landlord.) There can doubtless be rational explanations for 'funny feelings' in houses, or glimpses of fuzzy people, or weird sounds, but stop with your ignorant dismissal of other people's experiences.
OP - I would sort out the garden. Get a fork and get some air into the soil so that the rain sinks in a bit more when it does come. Turn the soil over if you can. We're on clay, and our lawn was very compacted. DH dug it and aerated it then sowed new grass seed - problem solved :)
Secondly, as others have suggested, get some sage and do some cleansing. Have a look online for instructions.

This is one of the more bonkers claims I have seen repeated on this thread. Most religions sell themselves on being the "right" one. The ones who know all about matters of life and death and god. The idea that they suspend all this and knock round with spiritualists because Margaret's got an unpredictable dog and a dark shadow it's mental.

Is there any evidence of this or is it just to try and lend legitimacy to "spiritalists"?

You'll probably no longer have the video but if you upload it I could probably give you an explanation.

Sadly was on an old phone, and not moved across.

I imagine there is a logical explanation to it, however, the feelings of dread/cold/fear are hard to explain when in the house.

Only time I have experienced it, and like I say, usually a very pragmantic science based view on the world.

Just an overwhelming feeling, that left as soon as i walked out of the house.

That many house sales in such a short time are also unusual.

Vincitveritas · 01/08/2022 10:15

@SammySammySammytheBetterfly They do indeed have the power, that's a rather large assumption. It's not the people involved who have the power, it comes from Jesus and faith in Him.

Miffee · 01/08/2022 10:16

"Why so dismissive of people who've seen a group of Roman soldiers marching at knee level"

How is this a question?

Why so dismissive of people telling you something impossible has happened??!!

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:17

@Miffee

I feel so sorry for that dreadfully closed mind of yours. Life & death is not so black & white & it can be wonderful to experience

CounsellorTroi · 01/08/2022 10:18

There was a time when science believed the world to flat... science often evolves & moves on.

There actually wasn’t. That is a myth. The Ancient Greeks believed the Earth to be spherical based on their observations.

TheVanguardSix · 01/08/2022 10:18

Just reading back the post on here about bog gas leaks and it's triggered a memory that I'd totally forgotten about, unbelievably.
My brother and his wife lived in an area of the States where there was a years-long natural gas/methane gas leak. By the time they left, they were quite ill.
They were both strung out by years of living in a 'haunted house'... they were convinced that someone was living in their attic (loft) and all sorts that I won't go into, because I've forgotten so much of it. It was clear, in the end, that they were both hallucinating. They stayed living in an area people were leaving in droves. Schools were shut and then relocated as it was too dangerous for the children to return, even when the leak was eventually stopped. It was a real disaster.

I really am beginning to wonder if, living on a marshland, this is what you're experiencing. Get a natural gas detector, OP. A co2 detector won't detect a natural gas leak, which is what you could be experiencing, based on the type of land you're living on.

My meme still stands, however... you could just have a giant cat living in your loft. 😁

No you don't. You envy me. Remember?

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 10:21

There's plenty of other examples @CounsellorTroi. I think you get my drift.

Miffee · 01/08/2022 10:21

RockinHorseShit · 01/08/2022 09:11

There is no such thing as ghosts. It doesn't happen. It isn't real

That's fine dear, you carry on in your ignorance. I actually envy you that as I'd much rather not believe in this shit too, but life experience has taught me otherwise.

This you?

TheVanguardSix · 01/08/2022 10:22

By the way, I don't wish to scare you. It's years later and my brother's health is great. His ex-wife's too (their divorce didn't kill them off either!).
It's worth finding out if you're exposed to a small leak.
I am totally woo... totally believe in all of that. But in your case, I think there is a more natural phenomenon going on. Don't haul in the priest just yet. Haul in the gas company (or get your own detector... not co2... just to reiterate).
Good luck with the giant cat in the loft.
