To not understand drag queens at libraries?

Just recently, there seems to be lots of news stories about drag acts reading books for children at libraries. I don’t understand what this is meant to do. Is it supposed to lead to acceptance as the children get older?

Not to mention scary looking for the poor kids!

BlackForestCake · 27/07/2022 16:58

actors in blackface were taking away opportunities from black people

I am fairly sure this was not the core of opposition to blackface.

We got rid of blackface because it was racist mockery and humiliation of black people. Not because it wasn’t real black people performing.

frazzledali · 27/07/2022 16:59

the idea is to promote diversity, help foster a love of reading, have fun. I'm glad it exists, I took my kids to something similar when they were younger.

Culture war hysteria is tedious.

I can’t see that drag is anything other than parodying women to ridicule them. I can see it might appeal to certain male fetishes but I don’t think it’s appropriate for children’s story time in a library.

👍🏻

Do they all also refer to women as Fish? And have slogans such as 'Charisma Uniqueness Nerve & Talent'?

No, but that slogan is linked to one drag franchise and the 'fish' thing isn't 'all' drag queen either. Many of them don't agree with the term and it's been (rightfully) stamped out of more mainstream drag.

jeaux90 · 27/07/2022 16:20

If they wanted to promote diversity and tolerance they could have the reading done by any amount of people from the different protected characteristics from the equality act.

But no, they chose drag, an adult entertainment, often over sexualised parody of women. Disgraceful.

I agree with this

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/07/2022 17:41

Its fucking ridiculous, I have no other words.

Im so pleased my kids are grown up and don't have this crap thrown In their face, well apart from my youngest going into Yr 10 who still has to have the stupid assemblies and lessons at school about the million different genders etc.

SpilltheTea · 27/07/2022 17:42

My sister took my niece to one of these and she thought he was a man dressed up as one of the stepsisters in Cinderella.

In my borough I have never seen any other story times (apart from a general librarian run one)
have you got any posters advertising the others? do they advertise them as ‘refugee story time’ etc?

I was horrified to see the posters for DQST in my borough. We are a very normal non woke Tory borough. No idea which imbecile thought it would be a good idea. I will be speaking to my local councillor.

people talked about the origins of it. As far as I know at least one of the founders or perhaps a founder in another country is in prison for a child sex offence.

incidentally the main performer for this tour advertises himself as autistic/ having adhd. Neuro diversity story time would be far more beneficial in encouraging acceptance.

I always find when judging drag queens the easy question to ask would be would a woman dressed like that/made up like that be welcomed into libraries as a role model to children? pretty sure the answer would be a resounding ‘no.’

NotawickedSM · 27/07/2022 17:50

It makes me uncomfortable to be honest. It's seedy.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 27/07/2022 17:52

They will tell you it’s to promote diversity but oddly drag queens appear to be the only type of diversity promoted. Huge amounts of publicly & resources are not dedicated to having people from African or Chinese or travelling communities reading to children. Ditto people with disabilities, women who’ve succeeded in non stereotypical roles, or carers but i guess they’re just not fun! Or stunning! Enough

StopStartStop · 27/07/2022 17:53

Davyjones · 27/07/2022 15:43

Is it to break down boundaries from children and desensitise them to sexualised material?

I was wondering the same thing.

yes 100% otherwise no-one would care about people "blacking up" for parties etc as they're not taking away a work opportunity!!

for the benefit of those praising this. This is the kind of person who is involved in this (please note this not the performer on this specific tour)

Yazo · 27/07/2022 18:02

Just a bit of fun and colour, why not. Not many men are out there reading stories and giving up their time, so if a man wants to put on a frock and read one it doesn't bother me. Or same for trans women etc.

ParsleySageRosemary · 27/07/2022 18:02

God knows. What happened to the proper traditional storytellers libraries were promoting? As part of promoting literacy?

As usual nowadays it’s some ideological bullshit that an upstairs middle class fool or councillor has decided needs to be imposed on people in order to promote themselves. Exactly the opposite of what libraries are there for.

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 27/07/2022 18:02

that's such a good point about whether women dressed like this etc would be welcome, just had a look at the youtube channel and I guess some libraries would welcome a woman dressed like this doing a storytime, I'm guessing others wouldn't

Personally I'm holding out for Massive Butch Story Hour.

Jaxhog · 27/07/2022 18:08

We have one in our library too. Surely the primary criteria for reading should ability to make the story entertaining, not the readers particular kink.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 27/07/2022 18:12

I'm just curious what people think about modern drag?
There is a huge trend towards androgyny. No fake boobs and not staying they are female, some performing with body/facial hair etc. They are still bashed with the term womanface because they wear makeup, wigs, feathers, sequins, heels, bodysuits etc.
Do you (the general you) consider this to be womanface?

PickleSarnie · 27/07/2022 18:16

I don't understand the point of having some bloke in womanface doing a misogynistic parody of actual women. What benefit to the children is there? Although it's clear its not actually about the children tbh. It's all about the bloke in a frock. I actually have been to drag queen nights in gay clubs before and, despite my opinions, have found them hilarious. But they are for adults in clubs, not kids in primary school.

Some would argue that it's increasing children's exposure to diversity. But how is having (usually) white men dress up helping diversity.

And actually if I was part of the LGB community I'd be royally fucked off that, after decades of fighting for representation and equal rights, drag queens were what was chosen to represent such a broad and varied group of people.

Yazo · 27/07/2022 18:17

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea tbh I find the term womanface really offensive. As someone with black ancestry, drag and blackface are not the same thing and people who have previously not really given a shit about racism using it to bash trans people is appalling. Trans hatred is disgusting and the comments on here only add to why our children need to grow up to be nicer people.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 27/07/2022 18:17

‘Personally I'm holding out for Massive Butch Story Hour.’

and this is the point - it just wouldn’t happen.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 27/07/2022 18:19

Yazo

Can you explain why it is so different in your eyes?
blackface is oppressors dressing up as those they oppress to mock them.
womanface is exactly the same, or are you going to pretend that women haven’t been oppressed by males?

I'm bored shitless with the whole fucking bunch of them. If I never see one more bloke pretending to be a woman, body hair or not, it will be too fucking soon. I wish they would all fuck off and leave kids alone.
