2 year old having shellac

I’m in the nail bar. It’s a hot humid afternoon. This place of stinks to high heaven of nail glue. Among the various women and nine year olds having their holiday nails done, is a 2 year old, sucking a dummy, having shellac nails done. They’re using the plug-in file on her tiny nails. The mum is here and argued with the salon owner who said she was too young, got really shitty and in her face to have it done, so it’s happening but the poor nail tech doesn’t look happy about it.

AIBU for hoicking my judgy pants and saying toddlers shouldn’t have shellac (damage to tiny nail beds, toxic chemicals, sexualisation of children as reasons off the top of my head)

YABU - it’s fine to shellac babies
YANBU - children should be seen and not shellac’ed

YANBU.

There should be a test you need to pass to procreate.

Perpop · 27/07/2022 14:51

What the actual….

YANBU.

The child is starting to cry so the mother now has her gripped sat on her knee so her little hands can reach the CND lights 😥

I have no idea why the nail salon didn't ask her and her mother to leave

Going to be a lot worse when she has it taken off…

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/07/2022 14:52

Of course not but the technician shouldn't have agreed to it. She should have been kicked out for getting in a member of staff's face not bloody pampered to

Plmoknijb123 · 27/07/2022 14:53

I would report it as child abuse.

PyjamaFan · 27/07/2022 14:53

I can't believe the salon owner and the nail technician agreed to it!

Absolutely crazy behaviour.

I agree.

Mally100 · 27/07/2022 14:53

What an idiot. She should have been kicked out.

edwinbear · 27/07/2022 14:54

That's awful. DD wanted hers done aged about 8, I did ask the salon (hoping they would say she was too young) and they said def too young, the UV light is damaging to their soft nails. Yeah, I'd judge too, babies don't need shellac.

10HailMarys · 27/07/2022 14:55

If you're going to the kind of nail bar that will put shellac on a toddler, you really need to find a different nail bar, because no decent salon would do that in a million years.

GlitteryGreen · 27/07/2022 14:56

This is crazy, what about getting it taken off?!

I don't think there's anything wrong with children having a bit of polish alongside their mum getting her nails done, but shellac is mad.

Annoyedwithmyself · 27/07/2022 14:56

The nail tech should really have stood her ground. This would be worth losing the mother's custom over. A toddler's hands are too tiny and wriggly to safely use an electric file on. She could really injure her and end up liable. Is it a legit salon? Ecen if there wasn't a policy, I can't see many properly trained nail techs wanting to risk their livelihoods like that. I would judge the parents too. Let her have them painted if she really wants but why do something that damages the nails?

poorbuthappy · 27/07/2022 14:58

I believe the same law is applied to the UV usage for shellac as it is for tanning sunbeds. So no. Not legal. Tbh I'd be reporting the salon

Blueberrywitch · 27/07/2022 14:58

Please write a scathing review!!

JustJeans · 27/07/2022 14:58

I would be reporting this loudly on my phone to the police. Actual abuse of a child happening right in front of you.

Lemonyfuckit · 27/07/2022 14:59

Yikes that is pretty awful to think of and also when they are soaked in acetone to be removed.....YADNBU

CakeCrumbs44 · 27/07/2022 14:59

That's insane and the salon should have stuck to their guns and said no. I would consider reporting them if there is some sort of regulatory body (I don't know if there is for beauticians). If they're willing to pander to one parents totally unreasonable requests, what's next?

Plumtreebob · 27/07/2022 14:59

Bit of normal polish at home playing around - fine.
Shellac - definitely not! I wonder if the family are known locally and that’s why the owner backed down. I still would be looking for a new salon though if I were you.

Hm2020 · 27/07/2022 14:59

I’ve seen mothers ask them to paint a little ones nails because they’re asking and so the kid doesn’t kick of when the mums having there own done but not shellac fgs I did used to silently judge baby’s being brought In to the fumes but used to think maybe they’re so desperate to have one thing for themselves nice and no one to leave baby with with but shellac for a 2 year old is definitely too far !

RedRobyn2021 · 27/07/2022 14:59

Oh my god, that's awful

Annoyedwithmyself · 27/07/2022 15:00

This might actually alert me to the nail bar being a potential people trafficking front. Staff shouldn't be that afraid to refuse service.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/07/2022 15:01

I actually feel badly for the poor nail tech who has essentially been forced into this by an owner who absolutely should have dealt with this differently and told the customer to leave. I would also stop using that nail bar immediately and tell them why.

This is all sorts of wrong.

Figgygal · 27/07/2022 15:01

How disgusting
Can't believe the salon are doing it
Can you report to trading standards?
