2 year old having shellac

I’m in the nail bar. It’s a hot humid afternoon. This place of stinks to high heaven of nail glue. Among the various women and nine year olds having their holiday nails done, is a 2 year old, sucking a dummy, having shellac nails done. They’re using the plug-in file on her tiny nails. The mum is here and argued with the salon owner who said she was too young, got really shitty and in her face to have it done, so it’s happening but the poor nail tech doesn’t look happy about it.

AIBU for hoicking my judgy pants and saying toddlers shouldn’t have shellac (damage to tiny nail beds, toxic chemicals, sexualisation of children as reasons off the top of my head)

YABU - it’s fine to shellac babies
YANBU - children should be seen and not shellac’ed

My thoughts exactly. Unless they’re taking acrylics off why would that be happening.

Nail bars with poorly trained staff often seem to teach them to use the electric files for everything, when I've been to such places (when I was younger and didn't know about trafficking etc), I've had them used for 'smoothing' bare natural.nails for a manicure, removing non-shellac nail polish, removing cuticles. I soon learnt but don't doubt this is still going on.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 28/07/2022 00:57

YANBU but I’m more impressed a 2yo would sit still for so long! My 2 would have poked the Shellac into their eye at that age 😂

But YABU about the smell of nail glue. I love that smell! I hate having my nails done so I don’t frequent nail bars but if I go with a friend I sit and just deeply inhale the smell like some snowflake-type junkie 🤣

PinkSyCo · 28/07/2022 02:33

Bad enough that 9 year olds are getting their nails done but a 2 year old?!!! That’s so sad, and just as sad that a grown woman has been bullied into doing this to a tiny child. She should have stood her ground and/or called the police if need be, because this is child abuse as far in my opinion.

ThePoorWeeDonkey · 28/07/2022 05:06

Absolutely hideous situation. Poor kids.

How are you these days @Glitterspy? I remember your other thread ❤️❤️❤️

Eatingsoupwithafork · 28/07/2022 05:49

Definitely wouldn’t let a child have Shellac or Gel but my 3 year old loves all things like this so I agreed for her to have one coat of normal nail varnish on her nails at a salon on a UK holiday and she loved it and sat still for the whole thing as she was excited to have “nails like mummy”. I also do paint her nails at home (again just normal nail varnish, one coat). Difference here though is she wants it done and it can come off with normal nail varnish remover.

Hah! Honestly I have better things to do than make shit up for mumsnet 😂

Like starting a thread about watching a 2 year old have a shellac nail manicure

Soubriquet · 28/07/2022 11:00

and you’ve made The Sun

I'd take pictures, video and report the salon. They'll lose their licence over this, that child us way too young. The mother should have been asked to leave.

What can she take pictures and video of? It was yesterday.

think….

tinkerbellvspredator · 28/07/2022 18:28

Salons have to be registered with the local council who ensure they are being run safely etc. I would report to the council - it's not going to get them closed down but they should get a stern visit and advice about health and safety. After all the mother may take the kids back again so something needs to be done - you could ask the council to remind all the salons in the local area of their responsibilities to stop this happening elsewhere also.

Haven't read whole thread, just OPs posts, sorry if repeating.

Georgyporky · 28/07/2022 18:40

Too late to report to either the Council or the Police.
Stupid fucking mother will be in another county or country by now.

lancsgirl85 · 28/07/2022 19:02

Absolutely appalling. Disgraceful mother allowing this to happen to her baby. 🤬

Just report the shop to the council & give the exact time the incident took place.
Most if these places are CCTV’d up so all the evidence will be there.
If they have chosen to ignore the rules of their rental agreement, business licence & break health & safety policy then that is on them. They have just invalidated their public liability insurance & rental contract in one service!

pollymere · 28/07/2022 19:07

You don't need nails filed for shellac. It could be to be a bridesmaid or something but they really don't need anything other than the polish. I'd have also put suncream on the kids hands to protect them. I'd also probably have just bought quick dry gel polish and done them at home tbh!

niugboo · 28/07/2022 19:09

@Glitterspy you absolutely should want to get the salon into trouble. That’s disgusting.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 28/07/2022 19:14

I was refused a manicure when I was pregnant, as salon said their insurance wouldn’t let them! 2 year old is just awful.

A two year old doesn't need those tiny soft nails filed at all, you just use those baby clippers on them if they look ragged or sharp.
They're always putting their fingers in their mouths, so I don't think any polish is a good idea!

YANBU.

There should be a test you need to pass to procreate.

This........

Why does a 2 year old bridesmaid need polish?

Ridiculous and stupid!

jamdonut · 28/07/2022 19:23

This absolutely astounds me… along with mothers who dye their children’s hair while they are still in primary school - boys and girls! What possesses them?

Lizzy53 · 28/07/2022 19:30

hellotheirsugar · 28/07/2022 19:32

I'm a beautician and I'd refuse personally

But I do paint my little girls nails when I do mine, she's always loved a little pamper at home but nothing stupid like that just the little glitter ones! X

lancsgirl85 · 28/07/2022 19:45

@Georgyporky

Yes, I know. Fucking disgusting, like I said
