2 year old having shellac

I’m in the nail bar. It’s a hot humid afternoon. This place of stinks to high heaven of nail glue. Among the various women and nine year olds having their holiday nails done, is a 2 year old, sucking a dummy, having shellac nails done. They’re using the plug-in file on her tiny nails. The mum is here and argued with the salon owner who said she was too young, got really shitty and in her face to have it done, so it’s happening but the poor nail tech doesn’t look happy about it.

AIBU for hoicking my judgy pants and saying toddlers shouldn’t have shellac (damage to tiny nail beds, toxic chemicals, sexualisation of children as reasons off the top of my head)

YABU - it’s fine to shellac babies
YANBU - children should be seen and not shellac’ed

Oh for goodness sake, really, a 2 year old? Who likes to investigate, crawl, feel. Not only is it unkind to have this done but it limits what she can do and the filth that gets under them os just ridiculous. Really just can't believe how a parent would want this on any level at all. All I've got to say is FFS, get a grip! X

WTAF!

Is that legal? Probably is but seems like it shouldn’t be. You aren’t allowed to sell fake eyelashes to under 18s because of the glue!

PurpleTiger110 · 28/07/2022 20:36

I'm surprised this is even legal? 😯

I agree but then piercing babies ears is legal!

Vile but legal!

My little boy (5) often accompanies me to the nail salon as we struggle as a family with childcare due to both kids having SN. He sometimes chooses to have them painted and others he sits and watches because he’s fascinated with the techniques used, they use regular nail varnish and then they put them under a blower to dry them when he has his painted. There’s no way that I’d let them put any other kind of chemicals on his delicate nails. This salon OP goes to wants reporting! Nail varnish can be removed in seconds whereas shellac takes an age and is a silly idea for a toddler.

Ortega888 · 28/07/2022 21:33

I would have called the police and social services whilst the child was getting the nails done. what whack job nut job parent thinks it’s ok for a 2 year old to have their nails forcibly done. Is the child being groomed or trafficked. What a sick world we live in so sad 😢

Vodkafairy99 · 28/07/2022 21:37

FFS, some people really don't deserve to have children. Poor wee poppet.
The nail bar should have refused to do it.

MindfulBear · 28/07/2022 21:49

Madness. My 6yo came to the nail place with me yesterday when I had a pedicure and they painted her nails and shaped them gently / ever so slightly but there was never a question of her having the gel nails!!!!

HarryBlaster · 28/07/2022 22:28

That’s awful, I hate to think what the mother was thinking. Has the child got pierced ears and a tattoo as well?!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/07/2022 09:37

I haven't RTFT so it might've been covered but -
are people mixing up shellac and nail extensions ?

I've never had my nails done (ever) but I thought shellav was a long lasting polish cured by the light lamp
Not the acrylic extension.

Some comments about her damaging herself or the manky debris under the nail unless she had long nails to bein with ?

Maireas · 29/07/2022 09:52

I don't know what the difference is either, I've never had my nails done, nor been in a nail bar. However, 2 yrs old is exceptionally young for anything of this sort, even if it's just regular polish.
The electric nail file thing sounds horrendous.

Gemcat1 · 29/07/2022 19:59

I don't agree with little girls being sexualised and, sadly, that is what is happening here. In America they have beauty pageants for 5 year old girls, where does it end?

1HappyTraveller · 30/07/2022 11:26

The mother is a disgrace.

The salon should be reported!

purplehair1 · 30/07/2022 11:38

Too many chemicals! Poor little thing! And I bet still at the age when they suck their thumb. Horrible idea, horrible parenting.

Electric files damage nails and should not be used - it’s a time saving money making thing, any good nail tech/beautician uses a hand file.

Curing the polish is either via infra red or UV lamp - UV is associated with an increased risk of melanoma.

the child is 2!

Marvellousmadness · 30/07/2022 15:30

Nail salon workee should have said no and kicked them out.

user1493559472 · 30/07/2022 22:57

OMG THAT IS CHILD ABUSE. The nail salon may get into trouble for doing the treatment. The salon should have said no and if the mum kicked off they should have told her to leave.

No they don't. It's a small emery board. It does exactly what an emery board does. The reason you shouldn't use one on a two year old is because it requires precision and steadiness to use. Toddlers are rarely steady with nails that are much thinner than adult nails leaving no room for error. Please don't misinform people. It's perfectly safe for a nail tech to remove shine and cuticle from the adult nail with an emery board or an e file.

Sometimeswinning · 31/07/2022 01:17

I think people need to read the news to understand abuse. This is completely stupid at best.

I don't get it. It's very embarrassing. But that's the worse of it. Having your nails done is pretty much 1:1. You actually didn't ask? I'm guessing it wasn't quite as distressing as you would make out.

E17Stowmum · 31/07/2022 20:45

The salon should have a licence from the council. If they do, it will almost certainly specify consent and age limits for 'special treatments', being the technical term.
If you can be bothered or think it's your business, you can report it to environmental health. However, it's the owner of the salon who will get into trouble (either for permitting the treatment or for being unlicensed), not the parent. But if the salon gets a visit, word will spread pretty quick and they'll know better.
