2 year old having shellac

I’m in the nail bar. It’s a hot humid afternoon. This place of stinks to high heaven of nail glue. Among the various women and nine year olds having their holiday nails done, is a 2 year old, sucking a dummy, having shellac nails done. They’re using the plug-in file on her tiny nails. The mum is here and argued with the salon owner who said she was too young, got really shitty and in her face to have it done, so it’s happening but the poor nail tech doesn’t look happy about it.

AIBU for hoicking my judgy pants and saying toddlers shouldn’t have shellac (damage to tiny nail beds, toxic chemicals, sexualisation of children as reasons off the top of my head)

YABU - it’s fine to shellac babies
YANBU - children should be seen and not shellac’ed

@Annoyedwithmyself - that definitely crossed my mind too.

If you're going to the kind of nail bar that will put shellac on a toddler, you really need to find a different nail bar, because no decent salon would do that in a million years.

I did think this but I’m flying at 7.30am and haven’t got time to find an alternative. Not coming back again though, I’ll find another place.

Agree the salon owner should have kicked her out but she was really aggressive and I wouldn’t have wanted to say no to her either!

I remember reading in a magazine some expert or other saying, whatever you do don't have gel manicures because they suffocate the nail bed. So upsetting to think of that happening to a little girl who isn't able to consent to it.

This might actually alert me to the nail bar being a potential people trafficking front. Staff shouldn't be that afraid to refuse service.

Good point there.
I would be reporting but wouldn't want to get the poor nail technician into trouble

Teadrinkingmumofone · 27/07/2022 15:07

Makes you wonder about the rest of their lifestyle :(

Glitterspy · 27/07/2022 15:09

Report to who though, I don’t want the salon to get into trouble.

The woman is now having her 7? year old boy’s done too and sitting right next to him looking about with a triumphant expression. The 2 year old is now strapped back in her buggy with dummy plugged in, watching something on a phone.

It's shit, but the police would laugh in your face if you seriously rang them to say a toddler was having her nails done.

Sounds like a really dodgy salon and yes, probably some people trafficking/modern slavery happening. But hey, you've got an early flight OP so that doesn't matter.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 27/07/2022 15:17

That is a madness. Absolutely should not be allowed in any capacity.

BMW6 · 27/07/2022 15:18

I think babies and toddlers with pierced ears was awful enough, this is another level. Who the fuck does this?

Firstly, a picture and a quick call to Social Services. The salon has her number and can chase them for details.

Second NHBF to report the salon. I don't give a shit how "intimidated" the manager felt. You call the police if you feel that way, you don't give a treatment to a two year old no matter how much some pathetic controlling woman screams at you. I can only imagine if this is her attitude in public how she treats her kids in private.

Glitterspy · 27/07/2022 15:18

They’ve gone.

Even the woman next to me in the pedicure chairs has just leaned over to ask DID YOU JUST SEE THAT in scandalised tones

Or perhaps save them from modern slavery?

I didn’t say I didn’t care, just that I was already sat down and can hardly leave with half-done feet. What would you have had me do, walk out with that blue bobbly stuff all over my feet and toe dividers between my toes?!

FictionalCharacter · 27/07/2022 15:20

The salon owner should have stood up to her. What is wrong with some parents?

Wam90 · 27/07/2022 15:21

Jesus this is awful.

”UVA irradiance or strength emitted by nail lamps whether fluorescent or LED is at least four times stronger than UVA from normal sunlight”

“Based on available data, the carcinogenic risk is low; nonetheless, the use of a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF >30 before UV nail lamp exposure is recommended.”

That poor child! How do these people’s minds even work?!?

Wam90 · 27/07/2022 15:22

I would also never use that nail salon again!

Annoyedwithmyself · 27/07/2022 15:22

If you think it might be a trafficking issue, the Modern Slavery Helpline is 08000 121 700

I've reported a nail bar before. Staff who had no idea what they were doing and spoke no English plus a really aggressive manager breathing down their necks made it seem something was 'off'. It was taken seriously.

If you're worried about getting the individual in trouble then say something like that rather than specifically naming this incident.

KnittingNeedles · 27/07/2022 15:23

They don't work. A percentage of people are just a bit thick. Their thought process is "pretty sparkly nails good" without even thinking about risks or warnings. It's not that they don't care or are well aware of the risks and are doing it anyway, they are just too dim for that to ever cross their minds.

TokyoSushi · 27/07/2022 15:27

Oh my days, I absolutely love shellac but it trashes my nails, goodness knows what it would do to a 2 year old! Yes, I'd consider reporting to the trafficking people too.

Mariposista · 27/07/2022 15:30

I can't believe what I have just read. That poor, poor child.

femfemlicious · 27/07/2022 15:30

Wowsers!. I am so sorry for the poor child having such a mother😭

user1473878824 · 27/07/2022 15:33

What were they using an electric file on? To get her acrylics off first?

I’d have told the salon manager loudly, from across the store, that if she allowed any under 18s a UV treatment I’d be reporting to environmental health.

It actually then gives her more ammo to say no because she can then say she’s not going to lose her licence, and whilst you might get some ire directed towards you, you’re not going to be financially penalised etc by refusing the customer

RampantIvy · 27/07/2022 15:33

Words fail me

cheninblanc · 27/07/2022 15:36

Unbelievable is all I can add. Poor girl when they need to come off
