McDonalds price increase

Sally090807 · 27/07/2022 08:55

I see that McDonalds are increasing their prices so from today their cheeseburgers are going up from 99p to £.1.19, a 20% increase.
I don’t eat there often but as the company made $12.58B last year, a 29% increase from the previous year, then I think it’s sheer greed to put their prices up.

YABU - the cost of living has gone up and therefore they should increase their prices
YANBU - they make massive profits therefore they should keep their prices on hold.

It's not a charity. Why do people in the UK feel so entitled to have everyone else's money so much? It's basic capitalism, maybe not in line with the general communist MN view but it's how the world works.

itchychin · 27/07/2022 10:43

Not the point but I had McDonald’s this week. It was delicious! (apart from strawberry milkshake which was too sweet - don’t think I’ve ever had one before and I’m nearly 50). I was a bit surprised it cost £13/£14 for 2 meals but I did add a McFlurry for DD. I’m my head meals are the £2.88 a pp mentioned above 😂.

@ReviewingTheSituation I don't know why you're lecturing me or taking this so seriously. If you read the post you've quote I made it very clear I'll happily pay for the convenience. Calm down. It's just a burger.

I'm not lecturing anyone! Yes, you say you'll pay, but you also say that "a £4 delivery charge is neither reasonable nor rational". My point is that it is entirely reasonable AND rational. As you say yourself, it's the price of convenience.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 27/07/2022 12:06

itchychin I paid £12 for two cakes and two drinks in a museum cafe yesterday so that for two meals and ice cream sounds like bargain. Wish id gone to maccies instead😂😂

Antarcticant · 27/07/2022 12:14

Keep some buns and burgers in the freezer and you can make your own hamburgers much more cheaply.

hamstersarse · 27/07/2022 12:16

getting a delivery of McDonalds to your door really gives me the shivers. I’m not sure how you could be lazier

MacDonald's the company is a completely separate entity from MacDonald's the restaurants...

The company is essentially a property management and real-estate company, hence the huge profits from leasing and franchising rights.

The restaurants are largely franchised, pay loads of money to the company and make a bit of profit off the food margins after the staff are paid.

balalake · 27/07/2022 12:25

Tax the massive profits, perhaps use it to subsidise energy prices, or the NHS who have more people to treat because of the obesity which they contribute towards.

Cornettoninja · 27/07/2022 09:11

Ok. So do you want the government to step in or something?

😂😂

Theluggage15 · 27/07/2022 12:46

Set up your own business if you want and make a small profit and charge ‘nice’ prices. Literally nothing stopping you.

MongoOnlyPawnInGameOfLife · 27/07/2022 13:06

Lot’s of idiots here I see saying things like 99p burgers are unsustainable, glad the price of junk food is going up, etc as if this price increase is going to do anything about either of those two things, rather than just being about McDonalds maintaining their profits. Just the usual snobbery pretending to be environmental concern.

As other more reasonable people have said, this is just capitalism in action. If you don’t like it then vote with your money and don’t go there, or go there less often. These corporations only care about their bottom line - anything else is window dressing.

lightand · 27/07/2022 13:08

Hardly go there now.
Prices too high and range on offer too small.

Ontomatopea · 27/07/2022 13:11

Seems fair enough. I hope they ensure their cows are happy

Crucible · 27/07/2022 13:13

Just to add to this thread and anyone thinking of going to Macdonald's (whatever the cost of a burger) please donate anything you can to the Ronald Macdonald Houses Charity. There is usually a tin at the counter or I think you can round up. They are an excellent charity and an absolute godsend when you have a child sick in hospital. The house in the grounds of St George's Hospital needs all the help it can get.

EllenWaiteourkid · 27/07/2022 13:14

At the end of the day, they have shareholders to consider.

They are a business not a charity.

We are about to invest a lump sum, I would be pissed off if our IFA came back and said that our portfolio wasn't performing because people think certain companies should not increase their price and subsidise Joe Public.

You get some tosh on here these days, but this takes the biscuit. burger.

Celeryfavour · 27/07/2022 13:26

I think the prices are okay but portions are tiny. It's not like that in USA! But at least you can get a kids meal for the same price as a drink in Starbucks etc.

925XX · 27/07/2022 13:31

They are horrible anyway, so I am not bothered.

HannahSternDefoe · 27/07/2022 13:37

The first price rise in 14 years and people moan about an extra 20p?!

£1 in 2002 would be equivalent to nearly £1.50 today, so you're still getting a bargain.

Skethylita · 27/07/2022 13:37

Welfare standards for animals bought by McD are no different from those of many supermarket chains.

McD have been under scrutiny for the "healthiness" of their foods for absolute ages, so their foods and food sources will be far more sound than those of the (comparatively) unregulated kebab shop down the road.

There is a reason that their cheeseburgers only have just over 250kcal - the meat patty is so thin that you barely get any meat - add into that the (sugared) bun and a cheesy slice and you can work out just how little actual meat it contains.

Now compare that to the same amount of minced meat from a supermarket and suddenly the burgers are not actually as cheap as they sound, 99p or £1.19.

Back to the OP, I am not surprised. Most businesses' expenses are rates/ land and employees rather than material costs, so all of those will feature in that increase, which makes the 20% uplift look rather small.

It's not though. The Happy Meal has increased at least 3 times in that time frame.

mogsrus · 27/07/2022 13:52

It's food,as with the weekly shop it goes up,plenty of other places to eat, the restaurant prices where I work have had 3 increases in 4 months...You only borrow food,no matter what you pay

mindutopia · 27/07/2022 13:56

I mean 4 pints of milk at my Tesco has gone from £1.09 to £1.45 in the past couple months. I think McDonald's is quite a luxury item. We earn quite well, but I wouldn't eat there more than maybe twice a year as it's already expensive for what it is.

^ I agree with this.

What McDonald’s should do is put that increase towards improving animal welfare. I don’t eat meat, but if I did I wouldn’t eat McDonald’s meat.

Mamamia7962 · 27/07/2022 13:59

I bought a big Macl for my daughter the other week, and it seemed a lot smaller. Have they shrunk?

TheGoogleMum · 27/07/2022 14:00

I think if companies are making good profits they should do their bit for cost of living/ inflation and not put their prices up. McDonald's could surely afford to not increase their prices
