McDonalds price increase

Sally090807 · 27/07/2022 08:55

I see that McDonalds are increasing their prices so from today their cheeseburgers are going up from 99p to £.1.19, a 20% increase.
I don’t eat there often but as the company made $12.58B last year, a 29% increase from the previous year, then I think it’s sheer greed to put their prices up.

YABU - the cost of living has gone up and therefore they should increase their prices
YANBU - they make massive profits therefore they should keep their prices on hold.

It's a business, their primary aim is to make money. They're entitled to put their prices up as much as they want, if people are willing to pay it then they will make more profit. If people aren't willing to pay it they'll probably put them down again. It's not unethical in my view, because it's not an essential item, people can choose whether to buy it or not.

Glittertwins · 27/07/2022 09:17

All food prices are going up as is everything in the supply chain. How can it be unexpected that any kind of restaurant is putting up prices?

SeasonalNamechange · 27/07/2022 09:18

Everything is increasing

Only on mumsnet would someone moan about a fast food outlet putting up their prices at beginning of school holidays!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/07/2022 09:19

I haven't bought anything from McDonalds for ages except coffee when I bought stuff for my DS

I'd imagine their ventures into Plant Based would cost them IF they're doing it correctly and using a separate grill plus utensils (I don't know if they are )

Givemeallthegin8 · 27/07/2022 09:23

Their prices are very affordable anyway so don’t see the issue . It costs more for me to make a lasagna then it does to buy 2 happy meals and 2 adult meals through the app

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2022 09:37

if you don't like the price increase - boycott them?

bluelavender · 27/07/2022 09:44

McDonalds sells high volumes at low prices. They can bulk purchase ingredients (which keeps costs down) but costs of raw ingredients, transport and staff have all increased. So frankly its surprising that they were able to hold the price at 99p for so long.

fukkit · 27/07/2022 09:48

Imagine what animal welfare standard are when their bodies are so cheap to feed and grow. Not all the money goes on staff costs, you know. Frankly I'd be ashamed to eat at MCd in the first place

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2022 09:51

girlmom21 · 27/07/2022 09:03

You think that's bad? Order on Uber Eats. They'll charge £4 deliveries plus add 20-50p to each item.

Well if you want your food brought to your door by taxi, then it costs money to do that.

Yes McDonalds food has gone up in price, but it's still relatively cheap and their costs (wages, fuel, energy and ingredients) will have gone up and they're a business, they exist to make money, not provide cheap food which isn't that cheap anyway.

If you don't want to pay for prepared food, you can take a packed lunch or cook similar food at home for a fraction of the cost. Aldi have a whole freezer full of McDonalds dupes if you don't want to make it yourself for a start.

Does it bollocks like cost more to make a lasagna than buy four McDonalds meals. That would be £15-20, and it doesn't cost anywhere near that amount to make a lasagna.

Good!

They need to make junk food more expensive

Yes, good

Make it unaffordable for basically everyone. This cheap junk food culture needs to stop and they are a big part of it. Take a look around and see the health of our nation in tatters in no small part because of the cheap junk food availability

Eatthecake80 · 27/07/2022 09:55

We have stopped having McDonald’s,they just aren’t worth the money, takeaway’s in general are shit now!

girlmom21 · 27/07/2022 09:57

People get pretty snippy when they feel you're insulting something they like, don't they Grin

No £4 for a 1 mile delivery plus price increases on all products is not reasonable or rational.

Does that mean I won't pay it if I don't want to go out in the rain? Course not.

I don't get this, people always say similar stuff about Center Parcs. It's a business, its sole purpose is to make money. Yes there are some CSR requirements but at the end of the day businesses only do those because it ensures they can carry on making money.

Unfortunately, although you might hope companies will keep prices down for good PR, you can't expect a business to willingly volunteer to make less money for some benevolent purpose. The price will be dictated by market conditions, by supply and demand. If they can charge £3k for a week at center parcs in August, and people will pay it, then they will. And if McDonald's can get away with charging an extra 20p for a burger they definitely will.

Hit the nail on the head!
They are a business. They will charge what they can/need to in order to stay in business and continue employing thousands of people world wide.

comealongponds · 27/07/2022 09:17

Capitalism will always put profits before consumers. It’s not just McDonalds, look at the energy and fuel companies etc (and unlike cheeseburgers, we all need energy!)

it’s absolutely shit but unfortunately is the way of the world, and is wholeheartedly supported by the Tories. Remember they told workers not to demand pay rises but didn’t tell companies to limit profit or shareholder dividends.

So, do you think McDonald’s should be nationalised then? Should that be in Labour’s manifesto?

Butteryflakycrust83 · 27/07/2022 10:19

I got a large quarter pounder meal a few Fridays ago and it was over £7.

Still worth it IMO, Maccas is an itch nothing else can scratch!

I completely agree.

It's got so expensive recently, I remember when an extra value meal was £2.88.

BarbaraofSeville · 27/07/2022 10:27

But that must have been years ago @Florenz, they've been just under a fiver for as long as I can remember, not that I've had one for a while.

Last time I went to McDs was about 2-3 months ago and I was shocked that it was about £7 for whatever special limited time chicken burger they had on and a strawberry lemonade. I didn't even get any fries.

Sally090807 · 27/07/2022 10:28

Maybe if they didn’t add cheap tat toys made in China to their Happy Meals then they could keep prices down.

OP posts:
TrickorTreacle · 27/07/2022 10:35

I remember McD as a student back in the mid 1990s costing about £3.20. The same today in 2022 is about £4.20.

Conversely, Wetherspoon's coffee that was 99p for donkey's years also went up to £1.19 this year.

It's inflation.

Shrinkflation on the other hand is a tad more annoying. That's where packets stay the same price but packet size goes down gradually. This is in hope that the customer doesn't notice it, but I did (for example) look on the back of Walkers crisps and see it sneak down from 34.5g to 32.5g.

The £4 isn't just for a 1 mile delivery though, is it?

It's for the convenience of being able to sit at home and order through an app, and then do nothing before someone delivers it to your door.

The alternative is getting ready to go out (shoes on, find keys/bag/phone), get kids ready (if there are young kids involved too who you can't leave at home), TV off, windows closed, doors locked, get in the car, drive to McDs, park the car, queue for your order, back into car, drive home and park up, shoes off, keys/bag/coat put away and then you can eat. That's what you're paying £4 for. It's not their issue that you're 'only' a mile away (I'm assuming it would be the same if you were 5 miles away, I don't know how UE works).

Frazzled2207 · 27/07/2022 10:36

Yabu
The cost of everything is going up
they are there to make money not feed you cheaply
they also need to pay their staff, and hopefully increase their wages

some McDonald’s food has always been ridiculously cheap. I really wouldn’t want k buy a burger where the meat is sourced suspiciously cheaply.

i’m not a huge fan of McDonald’s or how they run their business but on a very basic level by increasing their prices across the board there is more change of being able to pay their suppliers (many of these will be british suppliers) a fair price for their produce

yabu and very naive

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 27/07/2022 10:37

Meh. At least maccies treat their staff relatively well and pay above minimum wage. Unlike a lot of places. And those places arent charging 99p for a burger.

My friends son took a job there to see him through uni, ended up on their graduate scheme so bombed off his course he's building up towards a good career with no debt.

girlmom21 · 27/07/2022 10:39

@ReviewingTheSituation I don't know why you're lecturing me or taking this so seriously. If you read the post you've quote I made it very clear I'll happily pay for the convenience. Calm down. It's just a burger.
