I've been working overtime today, exhausted, feel like shit.

My 3 year old had a plate of corned beef, cheese and sweetcorn for his tea.

Did I just win the award for most 'that'll do' tea?

He quite enjoyed it tbf! He asked for more.

Ready for today to be done 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Not me, but my mother. She had really bad food poisoning or a stomach bug or something. Never seen her ill before, to be fair she really should have gone to hospital. I was about 6, and it was just her, me and my older sister. She was asleep on the sofa, dinner time came and went and I was starving. My sister was out, and I didn't want to wake Mam. So I ate the cat biscuits that had been out since the day before... and drank the cats water.
She woke up, looked absolutely horrified, vomited, and went back to sleep... I may or may not have finished the cat biscuits off.

Wallawallakoala · 26/07/2022 00:14

Barney bear cake thing for breakfast here 🙈

Splicebaked · 26/07/2022 00:20

I guess corned beef is sold everywhere I just don't look out for it so am clearly blind to it Grin

Nevertheless I've never eaten it or been around anyone who has

I'm now slightly curious to find out which of my friends eat it or have ever eaten it especially my northern friends. Hopefully Leeds is sufficiently north enough and the surrounding cities Grin

I blame my DM for my clearly lack of variety in the meat department

Rainingagaininseattle · 26/07/2022 00:30

I can't believe this thread. I've found my tribe. I love corned beef. I had some with sweetcorn and mayonnaise for lunch.

Not from this country, I have never had corned beef. What does the “corned” mean?

Going by some of the descriptions, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, served on carbs (potatoes) with onion gravy….that’s not so different from sliced foie gras, fried or seared, served on a mini toast with onion chutney/caramelised onions!!

It's usually in a tin or sliced
Think it's salt cured brisket from what I remember! Eat it cold in sandwiches or cook with it

Momtotwokids · 26/07/2022 03:21

My daughter, son in law and two granddaughter's are at Disneyland. My 13 granddaughter asked for chocolate funnel cake with ice cream for dinner. She got it. With the heat nothing wrong with ice cream.

HappyNannie · 26/07/2022 03:54

When our kids were small we called these type of meals surprise or party teas depending what was in and edible. always went down a treat 😂

supersop60 · 26/07/2022 05:18

My favourite cba tea is called " you know where the fridge is". (DC 21 and 18)

Tiani4 · 26/07/2022 05:41

We had nachos one evening last week (teenage DDs) as we were too hot to want much

Literally emptied a bag of nacho crisps onto a tray, few dollops of salsa sauce from a jar, grated cheese on top - 8 mins in the oven

DDs asked if she can have it again another night!

My DDs on occasion ignore what I've cooked for tea (proper meal) and instead make themselves plain pasta that they stir ketchup into 😬

Haveatakeaway · 26/07/2022 05:52

Pp

Tiani4 · 26/07/2022 06:01

I do cook a lot honestly ...

But other quick crap meals that have been seen on occasion on our table are

Tuna mayonnaise on cold pasta (tin tuna+ Mayo+ leftover that pasta from fridge cooked day before)... - my teenage DD makes it and says "but mum it's a tuna pasta salad"... (Without the salad!!) if I huff enough she'll dig out a tin of sweetcorn hidden at back of tin cupboard and stir a bit of that in it.. Grin

19 yo DS has a few cheap very quick student meals I've spotted him make - for eg -

He microwaves a 2 min rice packet ; Chucks it into a wok with couple spoonfuls of oil and breaks two eggs in and stir fries it all with torn up ham slices and some chilli flakes. If there's leftover cooked chicken in fridge he'll cut that up instead of ham. He claims it's an egg fried rice meal Grin

His version of quick"vegetable casserole" 1 Tin of vegetable soup and 1/2 drained tin of chick peas, some paprika / chill herbs and heats it up all in a small saucepan, eats it with bread and butter..

Galvantula · 26/07/2022 06:13

Mine love it if we get back late from somewhere, everything's fucked and I say "Ok you can have cereal for dinner." 🤣🤣

Ohmydayssilleople · 26/07/2022 06:47

I am definitely going to have corned beef hash tonight!! Annoyingly my granddaughter is vegetarian so I can’t introduce it too her !!
Corned beef will be the next food shortage after this thread 😂
My CBA tea when my lot were little were Smiley Faces ,Chicken Nuggets and Beans !
Guaranteed empty plates !

I’m just here for the posters saying “I know what you mean! Last week I was so lazy I just gave the children a 3 course supper of smoked salmon roulade, beef wellington with slow cooked duck fat potatoes, and a tarte tatin. Shamed to admit I bought the potatoes from the shop although everything else was homemade including sourcing the duck fat from our ladies in the garden. Feeling so ashamed of cutting corners instead of our usual 8 course tudor banquet! Lol!”

A Tudor banquet?

Darling you really should progress to the Edwardians, they knew about matching cutlery, pairing wines and best of all had lamb chops for breakfast.

Tarquin was quite put out when we stayed in a 3 star hotel and they only had a buffet! We had to convince him it was a 'peasant experience'.

Not from this country, I have never had corned beef. What does the “corned” mean?

The 'corned' refers to the beef having been cured with large 'corns' of salt. It's chopped up and compressed, so a different texture to pastrami.
Being preserved by salting and then canned as well, it's possibly the most durable meat product possible and so was/is used for feeding the army. I'm pretty sure it's what the children in the Swallows and Amazons are while camping under their name of pemmican.

I'll dispute that it's the most CBA tea possible if it was from a can though. They are usually slightly trapezoidal tins so you can get the block out whole, and open with a key which takes a certain amount of concentration and skill to open properly, My left-handed DH has sometimes managed to make a complete hash (ho ho) of this operation.

BeyondMyWits · 26/07/2022 08:32

In 2007 floods we were stuck overnight on the M5 in a mondeo, with me, dh, kids 7 and 5, and my aged mother that we had just picked up from Birmingham airport.

Do the kids remember the sheer horror of it?

Nope... that was the day we had biscuits for tea.

It was sandwich slices just pulled apart 😂

Looks vile, tastes lovely

I shall be cooking corned beef hash very soon I love it (recipe is from my friends mum who was known to make the best corned beef hash - fry onions, add cubed potatoes, cubbed cb, rice (cooked before) and beans towards the end you have to rinse the tomatoes sauce off before adding, tomato purée and oregano) a 70’s delight

ds loved tinned ham when he was given it in a sandwich it wasn’t spam and tasted like luncheon meat. Spam is very very popular in Hawaii

Elevenerifebruv · 26/07/2022 08:47

Marmite pasta is my all time favourite lazy dinner/ comfort food. Pasta, marmite, butter, grated cheese and some black pepper. So good.

shinynewapple22 · 25/07/2022 21:44

But you made it into a picture for them! That's the opposite of CBA

Sounds like something out of big cook little cook, anyone remember them?

They used to make this kind of thing almost every day.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 26/07/2022 08:50

Mine is tuna fish pie, my Nana used to make it all the time. A tin of tuna, crushed up plain crisps sprinkled on top, topped with grated cheese baked in the oven for 10. For the kids I do pasta, peas, cheese and chopped up ham. Their favourite.
