Mr Smith Ms Jones if it's formal or first time of meeting as anyone else. Most usually then say their first name.
Vicar is a job. ... He is the Vicar of a CofE Parish.
Priests are usually Roman Church, a qualification as in she is an engineer.

Disagree in a hair splitting way. Everyone’s a priest. You then get a post as a vicar chaplain padre.

Therapists scribbling down notes in a therapy session

I don’t know anyone that does

and often we sit for long periods of time in silence or the client/patient would rather make small talk but it wouldn’t make good tv

that mh patients are always aggressive or superficially charming

Not exactly related to my pre retirement role in the NHS but I had to roll my eyes at Corrie when Fiz and Tyrone were in a couples counselling session and someone knocks on the door (Phil) and the counsellor shouts out “ come in”. That should never happen, but of course, why stand in the way of a bit of drama! 🙄

What I found most ridiculous about this stupid storyline is that when Fiz arrived for a couples counselling with Phil, surely in real life the therapist would say something like, "I'm sorry, there's a conflict of interest here and I'm unable to conduct this session". She doesn't have to clarify to Phil what the conflict is but she would not have been able to ethically continue the session.

Pre COVID that's exactly what happened at the Primary school I taught at. At least 8 of us would meet in the staffroom and eat lunch together. No idea if it still happens as I've been out of teaching for a year thank God

We used to do that. Still do a bit although lunch is shorter. Teaching can be a lonely job so it’s nice to see your colleagues and exchange stuff you need to know or do

Are you the model for the Monopoly board? Or a hat maker?

Rarely actually disclose my occupation for various reasons so i'll pick the monopoly one..... never used that one as a white lie yet 😂

Georgyporky · 24/07/2022 11:56

Would a 76 year-old really be a DCI ?

Would a predominantly black island really want a foreign white bloke to solve their murders?

But I do love Vera & DinP.

liveforsummer · 24/07/2022 11:59

I work in a school and the teachers al have their breaks and lunch together in the staff room. They also teach right up to the bell which is annoying as we are expected by SLT to be out in the playground on the dot of the bell going however can't actually do that until the last dc is out and some are better at doing that quickly than others then any meds done eg for the diabetic dc.

Rockbird · 24/07/2022 12:00

I love Motherland but the cowbag in the school office seems to be representative of all school secretaries on TV and we're really not like that at all. We're lovely and love the kids. We don't bark at parents unless they're really arseholes.

This is so interesting, it seems ,most of MN is teachers or barristers.

That accountants have to be good with numbers.

Isn't that why we take our shoes and socks off for the big numbers?

liveforsummer · 23/07/2022 23:12

Ah the neighing 😆. Always neighing and snorting. In reality horses only do this if talking to a friend at a distance. On tv it's constant, trying to communicate with humans/warning if danger etc

Also horses are really noisy breathers and snorters, and most mares fart and queef a lot, but you never hear that, just incessant Lassie /Skippy “lookout humans” whinnying.

I have no idea what sound files they used for the LOTR horses but it sounded like pigs being slaughtered.

liveforsummer · 24/07/2022 12:24

@LaJoconde have you watched heartland? Those horses are always warning of danger. They also neigh whenever they are annoyed or don't want to do something like when they refuse a jump or dont want to walk somewhere specific. In reality they'd just do their best to go the opposite way 😆

Which country are you in? It’s not like that in most schools in the UK; I’m a teacher and at every school I’ve worked in my contractual hours were 8:30 - 4:30. So at my school even though the kids finish at 3 I can’t regularly leave before 4:30, the head might make occasional allowances if there was a reason I needed to leave early one day but for the most part teachers can’t leave when the kids do. In reality I’m usually working at school until at least 5:30/6:00.

I'm in Ireland so teaching hours are different, shorter days and much longer school holidays. 3 months summer holidays for non exam secondary schools and 2 months for primary schools plus all the other school holidays too. I don't think teachers have to do as much admin as they do in the UK.

The teachers have their breaks in the staffroom though in primary if it's fine weather then a few of them will do yard duty to supervise the pupils on a rota basis and get a supervision payment added to their income for this. Some teachers leave the school at lunchtime to eat out occasionally or to go jogging or for a walk or to do some shopping or errand.

That you’re a failure at life if you end up in a retail or hospitality role past about 25.

mall films/shows show really unmotivated people working these jobs like it’s easy and anyone can do it, they don’t show the huge amount of dedication, multitasking, physics energy, self motivation etc that you have to have to actually go in every day and get your job done.

bolleauxnouveau · 24/07/2022 12:28

I've never heard of queefing till now.😶Learning lots about horse here.

SantanaBinLorry · 24/07/2022 12:28

Hospitality & Catering.

You'd totally get the sack if you took your pinny off mid-service scrumple it up and dump it on a table and announced to your colleagues/boss that
'I'm taking my break'

A work acquaintance was once on one being diagnosed with a brain tumour. He’s dead now.

Gosh that's terrible. I've never considered that of course some people will know the individuals featured. 💐

Knew an actor who worked as a paramedic when resting. He appeared on Casualty one Saturday night and was recognised by a 'customer' the following day who refused treatment because he was just 'acting the part'.

SantanaBinLorry · 24/07/2022 12:30

@Pbbananabagel
I wish I could 'like' your post.
So true!

Spanielsarepainless · 24/07/2022 12:57

I was a professional ornithologist. Hearing collared doves calling in the background in period dramas, when they didn't reach the UK till the 1950s

People writing code really quickly and getting no errors when it runs.

I was going to say something like this!
I'm a University researcher and spend a lot of time coding, mostly frowning at the screen and muttering "ffs why are't you working" or "what's the bloody problem now!?"
The Matlab "error" noise haunts my dreams... 😅

This is so interesting, it seems ,most of MN is teachers or barristers.

Lots of other jobs just don't feature. Prior to teaching I worked in HR - we aren't all hippy dippy (as per the woman in Dinnerladies), but there is very little drama involved with all the data entry, record keeping, handling queries (important IRL but not edge of seat drama).

Likewise DH works in payroll. There have been dramas about the occupation of people he pays, but I don't ever recall them calling payroll to dispute their overtime pay.

Did years of bar work. No one ever asked for a glass of lemonade. Maybe blackcurrant and lemonade but never just lemonade. No one ever asked for a pint without pointing to the pump they wanted.

I always get a lemonade dont drink much unless its a special occasion for myself as i usually drive

Doubleraspberry · 24/07/2022 13:49

I did once watch a TV dramatisation of something that happened at my place of work, featuring our very unpopular head of HR. It made him look pleasingly (and accurately) scheming and incompetent. That was fun.

HPVH · 24/07/2022 15:14

Police stations (etc.)
That members of the public, involved parties in the crime/case in question (witnesses, victims, relatives) can just wander willy-nilly into the station and the detectives' offices. UK shows and CSI/NCIS.
Even before the 21stC tightening of security post 9/11 et al this would have been a no no. In the late 90s early 2000s walls were liberally plastered with coloured pics of all sorts of ne'er-do-wells and their details.
If we ever did have visitors we would escort them from and back to the entrance and they would never go to rooms with said pictures!!
