Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

The French are punishing us because we hold all the cards.

DuncinToffee · 25/07/2022 17:06

The joker cards?

LetsGoRound · 25/07/2022 17:09

Well it's not the ruddy ace of spades.
We don't hold any cards. France do

Condolence cards, presumably. "Sorry for your loss.....of Freedom of Movement and access to the Single Market..."

If the Franch authorities read to the end of that Mail article they'll want to tighten up on border checks even more 🤣🤣🤣

Don't worry - no one outside the UK can read English. Or so my leave voting chums assure me. And it's a well established fact that simply adding "end of" to the conclusion of a statement collapses the wave function to always be true. There's even a Feynman diagram for it on the side of a bus.

(I'm hoping to be re-accused of reading fantasy nonsense 😄)

cakeorwine · 25/07/2022 17:31

Just wait till EU entry points start doing proper checks on UK travellers.

Just like we should be doing on people who come here

www.msn.com/en-gb/travel/news/spain-introduces-new-85-rule-for-british-holidaymakers-entering-country/ar-AAZVRVQ?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=dde0bb90bf474bc3ad00ae5097ea7424

Tourists travelling to the country from the UK could now be asked by border control to prove they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of their stay.
Under the rules, holidaymakers must prove, if they are required to do so by border officials, that they have at least 100 euros (£85.22) per person per day, with a minimum of 900 euros or its legal equivalent in foreign currency.

This is what immigration officials can do - and are entitled to do when people enter the EU.

Can you imagine every single traveller being asked this?

Yep!

cakeorwine · 25/07/2022 17:38

I wonder what checks UK Border officials do at Calais and Dunkerque? Maybe we should do enhanced checks on every person wanting to come to the UK?

Of course they have the infrastructure and space

After all, we do refuse entry to EU citizens so maybe they should be checking all our passports in detail to make sure we aren't trying to sneak in for work

Love the hypocrisy of conservatives whining about strict border controls.

THIS.

And they haven't even imposed proper immigration controls yet. This is nothing to what they could do.

cakeorwine · 25/07/2022 18:01

If I were a French immigration officer who was fed up with the media blaming the French, I would do the border controls 'By the book'

Cabin Pressure fans will know the episode where an airport engineer decided to things by the book

Boycott French holidays. Head for one of the many countries that have eased travel restrictions on Brits in the wake of Brexit, including Narnia, Utopia, Middle Earth, Freedonia, La-La Land and Big Rock Candy Mountain.

Riiiiight.

It must be nice (in an odd way) living in your particular dimension.

I will accept Brexit…
When it stops being so catastrophically shite and makes up for all the damage it has caused…
Until then, don’t expect me, or ‘Remoaners’ like me, to accept a bloody thing. For those that want to stick their fingers in the ears and their heads up their arses. Crack on....

The Daily Mail and Express articles are amazing. It seems that it's just Brits who are being punished by the EU. No realisation that we are now 3rd countries

Quia · 26/07/2022 19:39

Clavinova · 24/07/2022 20:46

Quia
So, @ Clavinova, what are your views on Johnson's behaviour with regard to Pincher?

Unfortunate/poor judgment that Pincher was appointed obviously - but I don't know how serious the original allegation was - presumably not serious if an apology was accepted as the solution? LBC's political correspondent reported last week that the Tory whip was suspended from Chris Pincher 24 hours after an official complaint was lodged - that seems an ok timescale.

Also, I suspect that staff at Number 10 bungled the press statements - Boris Johnson was still at the NATO Summit on 30 June (Pincher had the whip suspended on 1 July) - and Johnson said something about being fed up that other people had been speaking on his behalf.

Just "poor judgment" to appoint someone who admitted to being responsible for sexual molestation, particularly when the appointment put him in a position of power vis å vis other people's careers? Something tells me you wouldn't take anything like such a relaxed view if a Labour politician had one the same. The timescale in questoin runs from when Johnson knew about it, not from when a complaint was lodged. And we know that on at least two separate occasions he sought to divert blame to those with Pincher for letting him get pissed.

As for trying to divert the blame for Johnson's lies to staff at No 10, that is beneath you. Do you really believe that over 50 ministers and officers would have resigned because of unauthorised statements by staff?

Ramblingnamechanger · 26/07/2022 20:34

Makes me so angry …people were told what loss of freedom of movement would mean. We were told we were scaremongering. I keep hearing some people who said ,o it won’t affect us, Now saying they are thinking of moving to France or Spain. It is no longer that easy. How dare they?

hatedbythedailymail22 · 26/07/2022 20:44

Today the Daily Mail is outraged because they think Brits are being punished because Spanish immigration (amongst others) are now able to ask them to prove they have accomodation booked and enough money for their stay. You know, those long standing rules for all non-EU citizens that existed long before Brexit and aren't in any way aimed solely at the Brits? Pretty much the same rule that UK immigration also applies to most other nationalities?

But somehow its the mean old EU punishing the poor little Brits for their valiant attempt at freedom?

vera99 · 26/07/2022 21:56

This is a real recent video from the Cabinet Office about how British businesses can export stuff to the EU. IT IS NOT A PARODY. A friend's wife is an artist and sells her work on etsy - lost 35% of her EU business now around 5k a year. Thanks, BREXIT - the gift that just keeps on taking.

BBC Reality check

www.bbc.co.uk/news/62294901

It is so frustrating to hear the lies from politicians. I have been through that border loads of times over the years and I know what used to happen. And we now have more checks. I would love to go face to face to a politician and ask them to explain how increased checks do not lead to things taking longer than before.

I wish someone would ask them that in no uncertain terms. Journalism since Brexit has been utterly lily-livered.

vera99 · 26/07/2022 22:08

They have to keep lying and saying they Got Brexit Done and we can take advantage of the 'opportunities'. There are none, zilch - we committed the greatest act of economic self-harm of an advanced country ever made in peacetime - put sanctions on ourselves. Putin can't believe his luck - as ever JamesOB calls it out.

They do know. They are colluding to fuel the narrative of national self-pity. So dishonest.

Busy weekend coming up soon.

I wonder what will happen?
