Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Vote to lose freedom of movement and goods, to want hard borders, and this is what you get.

Quite. You can't expect to have strict control over inbound travellers and not to have similar strict controls applied when you travel to their country. Yet a significant proportion of Brexit supporters seem to be incensed by the fact that this cuts both ways and seem to believe that the French are being awkward to "punish" the UK for leaving.

Some of the comments on the Daily Mail site have been hilarious, so much so that I think a lot of them may have been parodies.

notimagain · 25/07/2022 11:11

France has moved on since 2016, i was quite surprised at how Brexit appears to viewed on the continent... no one cares anymore, they've their own issues to sort out.... its all a bit "Conspiracy theory" to suggest its some sort of cunning plot.

Exactly.

Bit of a snapshot but FWIW the five lead items in Le Figaro earlier this AM were:

The recovery from the devastation caused by the fires in the Gironde.
Ukraine War.
Grumbles about EU Regulations on maximum working temperatures.
Kevin Mayer winning decathlon gold in the worlds.
Tour de France summary.

@WillMcAvoy Those are really silly and quite unhelpful comments.
My point was, there was a time, within my living memory, when we did not belong to the EU (because we weren't wanted). Surely "resigning or withdrawing or cancelling our club membership" must take us back to that point?

That only applies if there countries have not altered the way in which they manage borders in the meantime. We can (arguably always could) manage how we process people who come into our country, but it would be a nonsense to expect other countries to maintain the same approach they did 40 odd years ago.

AndreaC74 · 25/07/2022 11:12

@carefullycourageous Cleverly knows as well as any other Tory cheer leader, Brexit was about getting Johnson into power.

The border crap? they all knew that was bollox, red meat to Sun/Mail reading @jannii types on here.

When we were in the EU, we had similar incidents as many posters have pointed out already. Nothing new here. Whether we are in or out, it has always had these types of incidents due to staff shortages.

The point is not that there have always been problems from time to time at Dover. The point is that ON TOP of the issues Dover already had, Brexit has imposed another layer of checks and delays. Without solving the previous problems.

Sorry @JaniieJones I did not mean that to sound dismissive and lots of Brexiteers will be jetting off overseas, but I stand by my point that it must cost a bomb to drive to the continent.

Your point was not many leave voters can afford to fill their car apparently. Why do you think leave voters are less able to fill their car than remainers? Can you clarify please.

LakieLady · 25/07/2022 11:31

How much must it cost in fuel to take your car abroad!

That rather depends where you live, @ToodlePipYouLongHairedGit. I live 7 miles from a channel port, and it's nearer than my nearest Sainsburys, Asda or Morrisons.

When we toured Brittany in a motorhome a few years ago, we used less fuel than we did touring Devon and Cornwall earlier the same year.

countrygirl99 · 25/07/2022 11:34

Well, many argued that people voted Leave because they felt left behind, were unemployed or had their earnings suppressed due to immigration and that Remain voters were primarily affluent, middle class and worried about their holidays/erasmus placings so it would be a logical conclusion from those arguments. Unless of course those arguments were bollocks, which I suspect is the actual truth.

Yeah. We voted to take back control of OUR borders. We didn’t mean other people should control of theirs. The bloody cheek of it.

Lonelycrab · 24/07/2022 21:24

I thought the whole point of Brexit was to take us back to 1970, because it was a golden age to be English

Uncomfortably close to the actual truth.

Ah yes, 1970 - when racial and sex discrimination were legal, few married women worked full-time, the newly-formed National Front was gaining members, and the Beatles were still together.

Golden days ....

Ahh, James Cleverly. Is there a phrase for the opposite of "nominative determinism"?

Plus accommodation, eating out, entry to tourist sites are all a lot cheaper.
Two weeks self catering in a large three bedroom gite with private pool in The Dordogne in August is the same price as one week in a self catering one bedroom cottage in the New Forest!

We usually do the French option (pre covid) but currently undergoing medical investigations so staying in U.K. and it’s so much more expensive!

On the subject of clarifying @JaniieJones can you explain why you think it was reasonable for a 56 year old man to have an illegal birthday party whilst denying the opportunity for the same to millions of children?

Walkaround · 25/07/2022 12:11

Here is what voting leave did: made it harder to trade with and travel to our closest neighbours at precisely the time it was becoming less desirable to trade with and travel to substantial parts of the rest of the world. Climate change and international political tensions were already making it obvious weakening our own continent and pissing off our most genuine allies (you can’t but be allies when so closely tied together) was an absolutely horrendous idea. Putin and Trump, of course, thought the idea was marvellous and we all know what harm they have done to international stability.

The cost of self-catering in the UK was one of the things that made us look into getting a motorhome in the first place (we didn't go abroad much because I missed my dogs when we did!).

When we found out that by joining Britstops we could stay in loads of places for free, it was a no-brainer. It more than paid for itself over the few years we had it, and we went away a lot more, too.

As a proud Brexiteer, I don't care I don't travel to France any way😊. Not my problem just like most of the remainers who are not affected by uncontrolled immigration on their doorstep does not affect them.

Enjoy have a nice day! many like me are still more than happy with out vote!

You might be affected by staffing crises though 🙄

Jeez there are no words are there?

I really question the intellect of someone who posts something like that

Putin supporter too?

Those queues, doubtless funny to you, negatively influence the global view of the UK, damage exports, foreign inward investment, lower GDP yet i dare say you think you are a patriotic Englander too.

No tory leadership contender would Johnson wasn't a liar and dishonest and neither any of them give him any role in their new Govt.

Yet you were taken in by him... bet you bought a time share and lost your pension to fraud?

Outrageous- 40 odd years in a trading bloc with mission creep! Countries manage outside the EU. A period of adjustment is inevitable. I voted remain.

No one was talking to you. We were talking to Stanley Johnson who moved to France to get away from people like you. You are on Golgafrincham Ark B my friend. But at least you'll have a nice haircut and clean phone.
