Port of Dover Critical Incident

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Your point was not many leave voters can afford to fill their car apparently. Why do you think leave voters are less able to fill their car than remainers? Can you clarify please.

Ok @JaniieJones I will try my best to explain. Most people on MN state that only thick, gammon, uneducated types voted for Brexit. This means they will be low IQ, not much money, maybe on benefits or poorly paid and my comment was to say in that case not many in the Dover queue fit that narrative. They would not be able to afford the fuel if they are so thick and low down the chain.

The way it is portrayed is all these thickos who voted to leave are now lined up in a queue and they are angry they cannot be allowed into France quickly, perplexed at having to show a passport and are jumping up and down berating the French as incompetents. Yet most of the outrage is from remainers.

For clarification, the name calling above is not my view, I am repeating what I read. I am aware that there are many leavers who can afford the crossing to France.

Perhaps I did not phrase it well, but I see both sides of the argument. It will die down and a plan put in place to deal with the busy times.

Outrageous- 40 odd years in a trading bloc with mission creep! Countries manage outside the EU. A period of adjustment is inevitable. I voted remain.

Of course you did...

Countries operate in trading blocs these days. There are very few that operate fully standalone.

For 'adjustment' read 'economic deterioration'. And then of course you can brag about your % growth, which is easy to achieve if you're starting from a very low base.

HarrietPierce · 25/07/2022 13:13

Yeah Sure you did.. . rather I should have said Brexiteers are content to see our country destroyed , by the crooked cabal that currently form the Government.

Putin supporter too?

Those queues, doubtless funny to you, negatively influence the global view of the UK, damage exports, foreign inward investment, lower GDP yet i dare say you think you are a patriotic Englander too.

No tory leadership contender would Johnson wasn't a liar and dishonest and neither any of them give him any role in their new Govt.

Yet you were taken in by him... bet you bought a time share and lost your pension to fraud?

😂Thanks for the post but as usual, your reply is in typical of a remainer. Make a load of assumptions and make out they are fact.

Well FYI I have financially never been at a better place in my life and quite capable of making my own decisions for what is best for myself and my family. I also work in the UK and no I have a wonderful pension pot. Enjoy your bleating 🐏

I for one refute that vigorously. Intelligent, well educated and understanding people also voted for Brexit. Hundreds, maybe thousands.

It's just they don't post here.

Not at all true. It's perfectly obvious that a lot of leave voters are middle class and above,. plenty of money types. That doesn't make them any less stupid for voting for such a massively backwards and idiotic step such as Brexit.

Calling me a liar?

I'm just able to take a balanced view! Unlike many who voted the same way.

No one was talking to you. We were talking to Stanley Johnson who moved to France to get away from people like you. You are on Golgafrincham Ark B my friend. But at least you'll have a nice haircut and clean phone.

May be you should learn that Mumsnet is a forum for any one, so the "No one is talking to you" statement is hilarious and speaks volumes about your Illusions of grandeur on here 😂.

Keep reading your weird fantasy novels, it seems you are taking your cosplay a bit to far into real life.

Hundreds, or even thousands, is a pretty small percentage of leave voters, though. I think there were over 17m of them.

I hear North Korea is doing well of late.
And Albania did fabulously until about 1989 when it sadly opened up its borders to the rest of the world, and now look at the state it is in.

What novels are you accusing me of reading ? (I already note that the suggestion of being able to read needed to be nipped in the bud, eh ? Laying the ground for a liberal elite angle of attack).

I'll be accused of being an expert next. Perish the thought !

I read the Mail Daily for my fantasy novel entertainment.

Well, yes, 6 years ago there were. But 6 years of Tory rule, a global pandemic and the final season of Neighbours will have slimmed that down. And then they keep emigrating ...

SerendipityJane · 25/07/2022 13:31

I'm trying to save soap.

wigywhoo · 25/07/2022 13:37

@jgw1 pathetic! You're embarrassing yourself! why mention Albania and North Korea, why not South Korea? Norway? Singapore, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada? I didn't vote for Brexit but I'm not so down on my own country, honestly some reasoners are becoming like a fifth column!

HarrietPierce · 25/07/2022 13:41

wigywhoo Do you not realise that @jgw1 is being ironic?

pointythings · 25/07/2022 13:43

Norway is in the EEA and so benefits from EU rules. Switzerland has a bespoke but similar arrangement. Australia, Singapore and New Zealand are in RCEP, which is another trading bloc. Canada is a member of CPTPP, which is another trading bloc. South Korea is currently not a member of any bloc but is aspiring to one being implemented at present.

Countries which are part of trade blocs do better economically.

@wigywhoo I was giving examples of countries that are most detached from the rest of the world. I thought that was what you were after?
I understand that North Korea has particularly good control of its borders, after an upgrade of the fence on its northern border with China in 2015, resulted in much reduced smuggling.

I most certainly was not. I was providing a couple of excellent examples of countries that tried very hard to keep near perfect control of their borders.

pointythings · 25/07/2022 13:58

New Zealand and Australia also have pretty good border controls. And yet are members of a trading bloc. So clearly it can be done, it's just that the UK is a bit shit at it.

Ah, but the difference is they are islands, that makes things much easier.

How many comparable European countries are outside the EU ? how many regional trading blocs are there? and how many of their members decided to just leave.... starting again from zero?

We were a leading member of the EU, part and parcel of change and reform, with many vetos and opt outs, you are talking as if we were some passive member unable to resist the march of change.

What i find hilarious is that both Truss and Sunak (both brexitiers) want to crown themselves as Thatcher mk2 "Forgetting" she was a leading proponent of the Single Market.... perhaps the biggest change to the way the EU operates.
