Port of Dover Critical Incident

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Cleverly seems to be suggesting that the French should just stop checking passports Confused

On the radio earlier,Simon Calder was saying that when we were EU members and the queues built up around Dover, French border officers were able to use their discretion to wave cars through. Not possible with 3rd country status.

New Zealand and Australia also have pretty good border controls. And yet are members of a trading bloc. So clearly it can be done, it's just that the UK is a bit shit at it.

It probably helps that New Zealand and Australia are a long way from any other substantial landmasses and have far, far smaller populations, so fewer goods and people going in and out in the first place.

LetsGoRound · 25/07/2022 14:31

Well I don't know why all those in the queue don't just buy a dinghy and row themselves to France.
It seems to work well going the other way.

RockandRollsuicide · 25/07/2022 14:39

What is it like today? Any updates?

Seems to be clear around Dover but jammed at the tunnel still??

Because those in the queue lack initiative. It is one of the reasons that Rwanda is so lucky to have us sending them the dinghy people.

That's not an excuse for the UK not to do its homework in terms of tracking who comes in and goes out. Many EU countries have simple ID card systems which support entitlement to various things and act as a register for who is in the country. They aren't perfect, but they work a hell of a lot better than having nothing. The UK could always have introduced something like this, but instead has chosen the nuclear option of leaving its nearest trading neighbours and then whinging when there's consequences. They aren't even unforeseen consequences.

The Dover backlog fixed apparently. If it was BOB wouldn't it continue throughout summer not just last 2 days? It's almost as if a tech glitch combined with not enough staff and the start of the school holidays caused a bottleneck!

It must be disappointing I bet a few on here were hoping for a summer of gridlock just so they could carry on shouting 'Gammony Brexity Sun Reading Scum'. Sorry not scum that's the Tories..thickos I meant.

Nice try, but its not "fixed". The critical incident remains in place with long queues still present.

Mark Simmonds, director of the British Ports Association, said tougher border checks were a “reality of life” after Brexit, which created an external border with France. “There are going to be queues now because it takes longer to get through,” he said

SueSaid · 25/07/2022 15:03

'Nice try, but its not "fixed". The critical incident remains in place with long queues still present.'

But it says traffic flowing freely and there are no long queues on the telly.

Not really sure I understand your logic (or "BOB") but anyhow...

It's Monday, a generally slack day for travel...as you rightly say last weekend was the start of the UK holidays. What we need to see now is how Dover copes over the next few changeover weekends and keep our fingers crossed.

Don't go upsetting the remainers on here 😉

If they find out its clearing up they will have to go back to the pound shop with all their new crayons and big fat felt tip pens and chuck away the placard's until the next band wagon comes along where they can blame Brexit.

The echo chamber always goes quiet from these fanatics, when their made up rants and facts are proved to one again be proved hollow. Funny how the rowdy remainers never seem to have voters on their side though, its almost as if the silent majority just smile smugly and move along 😂

According to ITV news the problem has just relocated to other ports and the Tunnel as people have changed plans.

SirChenjins · 25/07/2022 15:24

Excellent news - 3 days of queuing to do something that took a tiny fraction of the time to do before Brexit. Huzzah for blue passports!

Let's hope all of the drivers with blue badges don't get caught out when they reach their destinations.

Notice how much money the Tories spend on getting a dozen people in a queue to go to Rwanda (£37 billion) compared to how much they have spent ensuring UK citizens can go abroad comfortably (-£5 million and counting [down])

SleeplessInEngland · 25/07/2022 15:59

Love the hypocrisy of conservatives whining about strict border controls.

HarrietPierce · 25/07/2022 16:10

Brexiteers whining and frothing about spiteful France. You couldn't make it up. We're a 3rd country. Get over it.

JangolinaPitt · 25/07/2022 16:13

Easy passage through Dover today to France -travel on a Monday!

Now passport delays are all France's fault too.

If the Franch authorities read to the end of that Mail article they'll want to tighten up on border checks even more 🤣🤣🤣

Not surprising really, bexit was designed to be a political vibe rather than a reachable endpoint. It can never, nor will it ever, be 'done'.

It said on a bus that there would be £350million a week for the NHS.
A poster on here said it was fine and necessary for a 56year old to have a birthday party during lockdown...

What, so ports have busy times? Who knew. Perhaps travellers should be advised of this when booking weekend travel at the start of the summer hols. I mean I thought it was brexiteers who were thick but they can't afford the fuel to go abroad so it can't be them.

countrygirl99 · 25/07/2022 16:46

Well I've travelled at this time of the year in the past with no problems when DC were school age. The times I have had problems have been in bad weather late November/ early December so 🤷‍♀️

pointythings · 25/07/2022 16:49

There have always been problems at Dover - due to bad weather, due to strikes, due to technical problems, due to the number of passengers.

There have never been self inflicted problems at Dover due to an appalling lack of planning and an unwillingess to identify and resolve potential problems. The first weekend of the holidays after a pandemic was always going to be bad.

Brexit made it infinitely worse.
