Port of Dover Critical Incident

1000 replies

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

They’ll blame everyone apart from themselves and those who voted for it will lap it up.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 22/07/2022 09:30

Because we always blame the french, it's tradition.

The real problem is why everything has to be given a ridiculous category now "critical incident" let's go to the blue bulb on the emergency warning system then! It's a queue, big queue.

Arsewangry · 22/07/2022 09:32

Can confirm first hand that it's absolute gridlock. Haven't moved in ages and the kids are climbing the walls. It's going to be a very very long day.

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2022 09:37

Taking back control isn't.......

With this government it is always someone else to blame.

newnamethanks · 22/07/2022 09:38

It was the idiot Brits that demanded passports be stamped. Thanks Brexiters, everyone feels so much safer now.

Plexie · 22/07/2022 09:42

According to the BBC news report it's because only 6 of the 12 passport booths at Dover operated by French authorities are open - possibly due to Covid illness among their staff. The CEO of Dover Port (or whatever his job title is) said they had notified the French that this would be a busy period because it's the start of the holidays but the French haven't fully staffed the booths.

How is this the fault of Brexit? Or do you just want a dig?

araiwa · 22/07/2022 09:43

Big queues=critical incident?

Well, it's what we voted for. Plus the long queues when arriving in EU countries

Lonelycrab · 22/07/2022 09:43

Vote to end freedom of movement results in…. not being able to move freely anymore. Shocking I tell thee!

What did people expect?

Unhomme · 22/07/2022 09:43

It appears the French border control hasn't staffed up enough to cover the traffic going via Dover today (which is where they operate). So it's the French control causing the issue, not because of the time taken to stamp each passport but because they haven't put enough people in to do it.

The UK Border Force and ferry firms all confirm their processes are free flowing.

Grin

It's almost like people didn't understand what they were voting for and yet such an important decision was in the hands of the clueless.

theemmadilemma · 22/07/2022 09:46

So it's the French and Covid? There are no covid checks entering France now by plane, why would the port be different?

Shame there can't be a seperate queue for 'I didn't vote for this shit' people.

According to radio reports, only 3 of the passport booths for cars, and 2 for lorries, on the French side being operated by the UK were open yesterday.

greatblueheron · 22/07/2022 09:47

I think anyone who voted for Brexit shouldn't be allowed dual passports. Make them wait in long lines with the rest of their fellow citizens.

PuckeredArseFace · 22/07/2022 09:48

What absolute bollocks, the French have done this for years and years. Nothing to do with brexit
Plus there's a problem with two of P & O ferries apparently

Amazing, isn't it? Classic exceptionalism.

I daresay there'll be Brexiteers saying the French should put on extra staff at Dover now that the UK has left the EU.

FixTheBone · 22/07/2022 09:56

We knew what we were voting for.

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2022 09:56

Before Brexit there was no need to stamp passports and there were no customs processes or procedures, so people with EU passports would just be waved through.

Ending freedom of movement is a 2 way system, it doesn't only apply to foreigners.

ChitChatChatter · 22/07/2022 09:59

Yet another ‘Brexit bonus’ 🙄

DancingUnderTheLights · 22/07/2022 09:59

I naively thought that after Brexit we'd start taking responsibility but no. It's amazing people voted for Brexit but still don't know what it means. I have a relative who was going on about how they had to wait in a long queue to get passports stamped and how it was just the Spanish doing it on purpose because they now hate British people or something like that. And he does it for anything negative that's come from Brexit - blaming the Europeans for doing it. How do they not understand!

Lockheart · 22/07/2022 10:02

It's not just a "big queue" though.

The gridlock means essential services like ambulances, fire crews, police etc can't move about like they should. Buses are stymied. People can't get to the school, the doctors, or work - and lots of these people will be fairly essential staff e.g. care home staff.

In the queues themselves, hundreds / thousands of people are stuck, probably for many hours, without access to toilets, and potentially food and water. At least it's not a hot day. But lots of people will go to the toilet on the roadside - I'll let you imagine the cleanup. And if people stuck in the queues need medical help, it will be difficult to get to them.

The queues will also contain refrigerated lorries with time-sensitive cargo. This will cost a lot of money if the cargo has to be wasted.

So yes, a critical incident.

How do they not understand!

Because they've been hoodwinked for over 40 years by an increasingly dominant political and media machine that has the vast majority of the money and power.

Cheeserton · 22/07/2022 10:05

You'll see people arguing about not getting stamps, because many Brits SHOULDN'T get stamps. Those who live elsewhere in the EU or are EU family members for example, yet often they get stamped anyway by French.

Indeed. They have “sovereignty”, though (wtf that is) so all is well.

🙄 East Kent is gridlocked
Let's hope there's not an accident or incident in the tunnel or on the motorway
Locals are quite good at handing supplies out to HGV drivers

honkeytonkwoman38 · 22/07/2022 10:09

If I was French I wouldn't let us in either. We are a nation of wankers ruled by wankers. We got the government we deserved!
