Port of Dover Critical Incident

1000 replies

AndreaC74 · 22/07/2022 09:27

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

Stamping passports is what happens to 3rd country nationals & that adds time, a lot of it, when dealing with 100s of '000s of passengers, plus having recently been to France, i ve seen UK people arguing with French officials because they don't want their passports stamped!

The UK seems incapable of organising anything at the moment, the numbers travelling across the channel is entirely predictable and delays we are now seeing were talked about pre 2016, i remember seeing the graphs on how long the queues would be for just a few seconds of delay for each passenger.... all Project Fear.

Before Brexit there was no need to stamp passports and there were no customs processes or procedures, so people with EU passports would just be waved through.

Ending freedom of movement is a 2 way system, it doesn't only apply to foreigners.

Well I voted for ending freedom of movement to stop foreigners coming here and taking our jobs and living on benefits. I did not vote to make any changes for me going on holiday.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 22/07/2022 10:32

@fromsurrey I would move to an EU country if I could at the drop of a hat but leave voters took away my right!

@KingOfRockAndRoll there have been plenty of ques before and plenty of boarder points around France closed due to staffing - this is not the first time this has happened at Dover, or elsewhere.

Coming from someone who had to travel the French boarded into Switzerland regularly over the last 20 years - it's really not uncommon for it to happen that boarder points are closed or unmanned due to low staffing levels. Airports experience it too - only they just let the lines build up!

honkeytonkwoman38 · 22/07/2022 10:35

@fromsurrey no a snowflake is defined as:

a young adult who is considered overly emotional, easily offended and dramatic

get it right ffs!

MummyBobbles · 22/07/2022 10:35

Dover was a national embarrassment pre-Brexit. It's been bloody awful for years... The infrastructure is not built for the traffic. We stopped using the ferries from Dover and have since only traveled on the Chunnel and that was many years ago.

Lonelycrab · 22/07/2022 10:36

Precisely. Who do they think they are?

Maybe we should threaten a trade war, that’ll show em which sides their breads buttered, that’ll learn em.

What you saying Lizzy?

How is that working out for you?

Companies cant fill jobs and migration to The Uk is actually up - and the increase is largely from non EU countries

Funny cos snowflake is usually used by people who can't stand being called out for being offensive.

"You can't even call them n***s these days, fucking snowflakes"

As I say, the real snowflakes are those melting down because they can't offend people any more, yet those who are called snowflakes tend to be tolerant, kind, inclusive people.

Cognacsoft · 22/07/2022 10:37

According to the port authorities at Calais its lack of French staff causing the problem.
Nothing to do with Brexit, and I'm a remainer, P&O are putting passengers on the ferries as they come through regardless of which booking you have so that they can clear the port ASAP.

And just to add, anyone daft enough to travel on the first weekend of school holidays must expect this.
Next weekend french roads will be gridlocked as they are every year when french holidays begin and obviously that's nothing to do with Brexit!
Travel on a Sunday night if you don't want to queue.

Bovrilly · 22/07/2022 10:38

theemmadilemma · 22/07/2022 09:46

So it's the French and Covid? There are no covid checks entering France now by plane, why would the port be different?

Shame there can't be a seperate queue for 'I didn't vote for this shit' people.

FYI I flew to France a few days ago and we were covid checked at the boarding gate - one passenger was not allowed to travel because he hadn't had his booster and we were delayed while they found his bag and fished it out of the hold. So yes there are still covid checks for air passengers.

DancingUnderTheLights · 22/07/2022 10:39

It took Hitler 6 weeks to conquer a huge country - who are the wankers?

That makes them cheese-eating surrender monkeys. I am pretty sure we're the wankers.

OliveHenry · 22/07/2022 10:17

And "yes please" to the poster who suggested an "I didn't vote for this shit" queue!

Oh this… so much this …. PLEASE

That is because we are yet to have a brexiteer prime minister. Once Liz Truss is in then it will all be sorted.

Plexie · 22/07/2022 09:42

Why are we blaming the french? they didn't vote for Brexit and aren't responsible for increasing/paying for extra capacity at the French border posts on UK soil.

According to the BBC news report it's because only 6 of the 12 passport booths at Dover operated by French authorities are open - possibly due to Covid illness among their staff. The CEO of Dover Port (or whatever his job title is) said they had notified the French that this would be a busy period because it's the start of the holidays but the French haven't fully staffed the booths.

How is this the fault of Brexit? Or do you just want a dig?

Because before Brexit we didn't need a stamp. Now we do. So the checks take slightly longer, and the queues build up. Predicted a long time ago. Brexit.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 22/07/2022 10:19

Summer holidays, I would imagine. Even accounting for half-term, October is never as busy as late July and August.

People are avoiding airports due to the chaos there, so obviously the ports are going to be much busier.

Rojjahri · 22/07/2022 10:26

Hardly the fault of Brexit - which was a democratic process that was won by the people who voted to Leave.

French understaffing is solely on them - it's not only the ports, recently there were incidents elsewhere too. Ultimately they've had a long time to sort out the staffing crisis and they haven't.

It wasn't a proper democratic process, nothing was won, and The French are just fine with how much staffing they have and don't feel the need to spend more money on staff to deal with the extra paperwork that the British voted for.

what on Earth has Hilter's invasion got to do with anything?

MarshaMelrose · 22/07/2022 10:46

In my opinion Brexit voters didn't find out all the true facts before voting. They voted on long held prejudice.

Similarly, Remain voters havent bothered to find out the true facts before commenting on this story. They're just spouting crap because of their prejudices.

Hence both Brexiters and Remainers are exactly the same in that they are ruled by prejudices and not fact. This same thing of the French not supplying sufficient staff has been happening for years.

A friend flew over from Holland yesterday. They can't get staff at the Dutch airports, all flights delayed because they haven't got enough staff to handle the baggage and refuel the planes. Obviously nothing to do with Brexit. There are shortage of staff problems across Europe.

WillMcAvoy · 22/07/2022 10:46

Its chief executive, Doug Bannister, declared a critical incident, telling the BBC the port had been “badly let down” by French border controls that were “insufficiently resourced” and working slower than normal, causing traffic to queue for miles. The Port of Dover said in a statement: “We are deeply frustrated that the resource at the French border overnight and early this morning has been woefully inadequate to meet our predicted demand and even more deeply regret the consequences that will now be felt by so many.

Has he ever met a french person, or dealt with french bureacracy? If anything would make them go even slower...they'll actually be removing staff!!

JugglingJanuary · 22/07/2022 10:47

Hoppinggreen · 22/07/2022 10:15

Why the Fuck should The French (who didnt vote for Brexit) put on extra staff to deal with the extra admin caused by it?
It would be a Non from me

@Plexie

its a sport, blame Brexit for everything g and blame Brits. Weird it's never the responsibility of the French or whoever.

@Hoppinggreen because they rely on the tourist €€€€

@Arsewangry I'm sorry your stuck in it & with kids!! I hope you've got snacks & drinks at least.
