To think it’s perfectly possible to assemble a lasagne in my half hour lunch break?

I did this yesterday and my husband says I didn’t. He thinks I couldn’t possibly have had time, and therefore I must have used working time (I was working from home). I have explained but he’s not listening.

To be clear:
I had the meat sauce in the freezer, so I defrosted and heated it up a bit in the microwave.
I used no-cook lasagne sheets.
So all I had to do was make white sauce and put it all together.
I left it to settle and put it in the oven later.

Perfectly possible, right? I’m kind of flabbergasted that he thinks it isn’t. And very pissed off that therefore I must be lying.

I can make a lasagne from scratch in 15 minutes ready for the oven.

Impossible.

How??? You have to peel and chop onions, garlic, celery and whatever other veg you're using. Fry them off, brown the mince, season with herbs, add tomatoes/passata/stock/ wine and reduce. Granted the chopping is the labour intensive bit but that whole process takes me about an hour and a half. Then you still need to assemble ragu and pasta sheets in layers, make white sauce and apply it. I'm not getting 15 mins at all unless your ragu is just raw mince with no veg!

I use a base mix from Asda for mine;it saves so much time;If your turn using jarred sauces it takes takes little time to assemble.

"I believe the words you meant to use, dear husband, were 'thank you so much darling for using your lunch break to make us all a lovely dinner'."

Efficient use of lunch half hour for the benefit of the family, OP. Sorry your husband was such an arse about it (plus if he arranged the day out, he should have made an arrangement he could fulfil, not assume you would leave work early).

NanaNelly · 21/07/2022 16:13

Op, could you stop cooking in your lunch hour given that if you were working out of an office you wouldn’t be able to cook dinner during your lunch break.

Apart from that he sounds like a nasty Pig.

On the very off chance it could be done, Hydrangeatea isn’t wrong though.

I was wondering if he was arguing because when he does it the job takes 5 x as long. My DH and I have clashed a few times when I've said that a particular task is simple and takes minimal prep time and he then tries to do it, but adds in 35 steps that are completely unnecessary. Like rearranging the freezer so that next time the item he wants is in a better spot. Which is funny because these 'discussions' usually mean he will avoid doing the task ever again. He also has adhd so can easily tune out for a time when if he was focussed the job would already be over.

Having read further I'm not sure your DH actually ever been in the kitchen to know how long any food prep takes.

He's being an arse.

And if you work from home and your hours are not flexible I'm not sure why he made the arrangement for your shared child on the assumption that your time is your own. Sounds like he doesn't think you are working the hours you are.

Of course you can assemble a lasagne in that time.

I'm much more concerned about your abusive husband though.

Lol

IncompleteSenten · 21/07/2022 16:18

Make one in front of him while he stands there with a stop watch then shove it up his arse.

Meraas · 21/07/2022 16:20

And I still had to leave early to collect DD.

Why did you reward his shitty behaviour by leaving work early?

SillySausage81 · 21/07/2022 16:25

I know it's a massive stereotype, but I have found that my husband and ex boyfriends have been woefully bad at multi-tasking.

So for example, if I was assembling that lasagne, I'd have put the meat in the microwave to defrost, and then be whipping up the white sauce while the meat defrosted in the microwave, then once the sauce was at the simmering stage I'd be grating cheese in between stirring the sauce. Whereas my husband would put the meat in to defrost, stand there watching it until it was done, then do the sauce, stand there stirring it until it was done then grate the cheese, meaning it would all take about 3 times as long. Could this be the case for your husband?

If it really comes to it, you could offer to give him a demonstration next week.

I had protested about having to finish work early but had then stupidly caved in, earlier in the day.

The accusations about the lasagne came later.

DH often makes lasagne, he could do that easily in less an half an hour.

NiqueNique · 21/07/2022 16:32

Well he’s a dick isn’t he.

Why on earth did you cave?? And then he still gave you grief for it. What a Prince among men.

NiqueNique · 21/07/2022 16:33

If DH had treated me like this (and he never would), he’d never get to eat my homemade lasagne again! And I’m deadly serious about that.

Cervinia · 21/07/2022 16:38

If course it is, I prepare a meal like that most days

Ridiculous. It only takes 5 minutes, are you just lazing about for the other 10?

Bunty55 · 21/07/2022 15:46

It is perfectly possible to wrap a homemade lasagne round the back of his head in a lot less time than it would for him to clean it off

😂😂😂 I love that! I can see it now

Too right.

Why are women having children with men who treat them with so little respect and call them liars.

OP, so he bullied you into agreeing?

Have a think, the lasagne is the least of it.

I would much rather be single and childless than live the lives of so many women on here.

So sad.

Ariela · 21/07/2022 16:48

He so obviously rarely does the cooking.
Dare you to show him this thread!

Am pleased you suggested Lasgane, we can have that for tea tonight, I have 20 mins to assemble and I've only got dried sheets of lasagne and frozen mince.

That does sound like a recipe for food poisoning though. Your pre-made frozen meat sauce was heated up a bit and in the bacteria multiplying "danger zone" temp for too long - presumably all afternoon.
It should have been either kept cold by defrosting in the fridge, assembling lasagne with cold components and kept refrigerated until ready to cook, or microwave the sauce as you assembled the lasagne and immediately cook to get to a safe temperature. ie over approx 75 degrees.
Perfectly possible to assemble in your lunch break though.

I read that in the voice of Doc Martin for some reason 😂

5 minutes?? Surely in five minutes you should be able to make a lasagne from scratch, bake and assemble a couple of pavlovas and batch-cook three or four other meals. Plus at least begin preparing a selection of canapés.

CallOnMe · 21/07/2022 17:04

Is he normally such an arse?
