Just being nosey really, I feel like most of the women on mumsnet are really big earners. I need help managing my money a bit better I think.

What kind of level / qualifications / stress for this kind of salary?

That's quite good for public sector isn't it?

Agree - what an outdated and sexist attitude

if this was dadsnet no-one would doubt the figures

150k - salaried partner in law/professional services

and no that is NOT a lie

I would say the same thing about men. If tons of them claimed to be in big jobs with big salaries, the majority will be lying, because how can so many people on an open forum that isn't aimed at those job types be earning that much? This is the same as life, there is a bell curve, small amount of people at the bottom, small amount at the top. Most in the middle. Yet ask in here and EVERYONE earns a ton of money. Not possible.

It's not being sexist, that's lazy thinking. Surprised you earn so much.

That assumes though that mn is equally used by women in all occupations though and that they are equally likely to post about their salary. I don’t think either is true.

jetadore · 20/07/2022 19:29

Rock star. Millions. (Sorry can’t be more specific for tax reasons)

There probably is quite a widespread range of jobs on this site, this thread is proving that. People in all different industries and sectors. Yet some on here think most of us are extremely well paid. That's just not going to be true. Some will be sure, but not the majority.

People will lie, god knows why when it's anonymous, but they will. They'll have different reasons for that. They've done it plenty of times before, pretending to be ill, pretending they have issues etc. It's not unbelievable that they'd lie about salary too.

@pixie5121 I'm based in the South West of England (not sure if it would be classed as a low cost of living area) and the salary range is average plus it's not inclusive of any potential bonuses.

@ILikeHotWaterBottles

You are surprised I earn so much? I am a salaried partner who specialises in tax consultancy in the big 4 in London (ie one of the biggest 4 accounting practices in the world ) - just see what the equity partners earn ie £600k.. it’s all public info. And I’ve just started as a salaried partner - many salaried partners earn substantially more than me

Oh and that is after me studying law at a top RG university, doing a training contract at a city law firm, being an associate lawyer for 5 years (working until midnight regularly and sometimes all nighters and weekends) before moving to the big 4 then doing a masters in law and then doing my chartered tax advisory exams - so yes really not a surprise I earn that at all - and in the city I have several female friends in finance/banking/private equity funds who earn far more than me

it really is possible

Come on - there is a bell curve but it goes without saying that people who answer will invariably be happy to disclose - and often that will be the higher earners

people who don’t work or earn much may not be as comfortable disclosing

it really isn’t rocket science

There has been published research into MN demographics. It's easily found if you are interested.

MN membership is skewed towards the middle classes, towards higher levels of academic attainment, and towards higher earners on average.

Of the general UK population, over 2% of people earn more that £102k so it's not at all unreasonable to think that could be double on MN. Of any given 1,000 MNers it's very possible that 40-50 of them earn >£100k.

A thread like this might well have thousands of readers. Hundreds will reply and, given the above, even if posters were 'MN average' there'd be many high earners among them. But realistically the higher earners are more likely to reply so there's going to be an even great skew towards high earners posting here.

I'm not sure why you're so determined to dismiss this.
