My Parents are a bit selfish don't you think?

My Parents live in an area where the water companies have set messages to everyone telling them not to use hosepipes over the coming days due to the extreme heat. When I spoke to my parents earlier they said they are still going to use the hosepipe as they pay a lot of money for water usage and if they are not going to receive a discount for being told not to use water they are going to carry on using it as they like to water their garden most days during the Summer.

Yes.

ElizaJones · 17/07/2022 18:16

Yes, they really are.

cubangal · 17/07/2022 18:17

I have had to use mine as we have two wildlife ponds which would have dried out otherwise.

SunscreenCentral · 17/07/2022 18:18

Are they Brexiteers, just out of curiosity

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 17/07/2022 18:18

Yeah a bit selfish, but loads of people won't adhere to it. Especially as the water companies often lose 100s of millions of gallons of water a year due to broken drains and faulty/cracked pipes. It's understandable that some people say 'like fuck will I let my plants die, when the water company can't be fucked to fix the issues that piss away 100s of millions of gallons of water a year.'

BooksAndHooks · 17/07/2022 18:19

I can see their point though. Having spent hundreds probably thousands and several years getting our garden fully planted I am not in a position to just let it all die. Despite watering we have already suffered a lot of loss of plants. Not watering them will kill a huge amount off.

StoneofDestiny · 17/07/2022 18:19

Yes - if we end up with street pumps like 1976 we will all be pe'ed off.

So - you are 'in a position' to stop using them, you just don't want to because you like your garden.

I've got no particular views on hose pipes, but at least be honest.

Monoandsix · 17/07/2022 18:20

Do your parents still pay rates?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/07/2022 18:20

Meh, I can see their point.

It might be selfish but we're all selfish in our own ways.

mbosnz · 17/07/2022 18:22

Could you suggest to them that a compromise would be using a watering can? I find that there's a very real awareness when you're filling the can and toting it out.

Unfortunately, water shortages are going to become very real issues, potentially. People are going to have to prioritise. Plants over people? Or people over plants?

return your garden to nature and you won’t have this problem!

ThettaReddast · 17/07/2022 18:29

Too late now of course, but anyone so determined to water their garden come what may should really invest in a water butt or two.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 17/07/2022 18:33

Thats climate change all over really isn't it. Industry causing 90% of the problems but lest put the blame & guilt on Brenda because her flowers make her happy, Ken because he has the audacity to drive to work and Anna because she wants to go to another country on holiday once every other year.

Misstes · 17/07/2022 18:34

If it’s anything like around here and the amount of parents filling swimming pools ready for the warm weather. I don’t see why that’s ok but watering a garden isn’t.

MintJulia · 17/07/2022 18:35

Yes, arrogant and selfish.

I hope they end up on a standpipe. That really is miserable.

This. ^ One of my neighbours has around 50 sunflowers that she has been growing and nurturing since mid March. They are essential for the bees and butterflies, but especially the bees, they get great nourishment from the sunflowers. She said no way in hell is she going to let them die, and she has been watering them every evening. It's all right saying 'fuck the plants' but the insects need them. Along with many other flowers, not just the 'wild ones.'

This too. ^

MintJulia · 17/07/2022 18:37

They could invest in a grey water filament system that diverts bath and shower water into an auto watering pipe network for the garden.

Then they could have a green lawn without having to use a hose.

easyday · 17/07/2022 18:38

I haven't had a letter and I'll be using one as I've just spent £7k landscaping! I'm metered I'll be paying for my usage. Not doing the grass though - it's brown but will recover. I'd rather skip a shower or three than see my plants die.

Ontomatopea · 17/07/2022 18:38

Buy them a water butt?

Tbh there are so many people showing off their paddlingpools despite the water people asking people to be careful I can understand why they think they might as well water the plants. But yes, they are all selfish.

ivykaty44 · 17/07/2022 18:40

my non has filled 130 litter pool

dolphinsarentcommon · 17/07/2022 18:40

We've had the same message. Tbh my first thought was 'there's ST covering their arses cos if by some minuscule chance there's a problem in the next 48hrs they'll be able to say 'we warned you ''.

mogsrus · 17/07/2022 18:43

Bet they are not on a water meter. Our neighbour does the same, said he would stop if he was on a meter because it would cost too much . What I think is really the serious thing is,should we get into major water trouble, how do you put fires out, when people just waste it by being absolutely selfish

giraffesaregreat · 17/07/2022 18:45

Maybe they could consider using some of the waste water from their house? We use the washing up water etc to water the plants & it's much less wasteful.
