My Parents are a bit selfish don't you think?

My Parents live in an area where the water companies have set messages to everyone telling them not to use hosepipes over the coming days due to the extreme heat. When I spoke to my parents earlier they said they are still going to use the hosepipe as they pay a lot of money for water usage and if they are not going to receive a discount for being told not to use water they are going to carry on using it as they like to water their garden most days during the Summer.

This is very much a baby boomer attitude....I've paid my stamp so I'm entitled to everything.

JinglingHellsBells · 17/07/2022 21:00

The thing is, if you are on a water meter, it can be cheaper to pay for the water than replace dying trees and shrubs that would cost much more.

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 17/07/2022 21:01

Australia have hose pipe bans every year they don’t end up on street pumps. Can we all just calm down please. It’s two days of hot weather.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/07/2022 20:54

Not using hosepipe does not equal not watering plants. Tap and watering can/bucket does the job. But no one needs to water their lawn.

A bucket/watering can is fine if you can physically carry one. Or you don't have a huge garden.

Too late now of course, but anyone so determined to water their garden come what may should really invest in a water butt or two.

Both empty in the middle of last week and they were overflowing at one point not too long ago!

I’m certainly all in favour of reusing water and collecting rain to use but like a PP (and I suspect many others on here) I also have a beautiful garden full of wildlife that will die without water.

I’m more inclined to be angry with inefficient water companies who charge a fortune, fail to fix huge water leaks and also the flood our rivers with human waste.

Going forward all of us will be looking towards dry planting but in the meantime I won’t be watching my plants die. The lawn is already gone but that, unlike most other plants does regenerate after a good rainfall.

This.

Keep arguing they are right? Ignore the majority for their own wants? Insist they have a right regardless of any other opinions? Not a Brexiteer!

😂

BlackberrySky · 17/07/2022 21:14

A hosepipe ban is a very blunt instrument, but I understand the message it puts across. It would clearly be much fairer to limit water to a set amount per household but that's not possible under normal circumstances. So I think using common sense is required. If you prefer to skip a bath and use the equivalent amount hosing your garden then I think that's fine.

Threetulips · 17/07/2022 21:15

Years ago they sent up helicopters and fined people with green lawns!

EntertainingandFactual · 17/07/2022 20:50

I don’t know really. Some families run the dishwasher and washing machine several times a day, run multiple baths and showers, have loads of toilets flushing (why do new houses have so many toilets?)

If your parents are doing none if the above and just want to water the hanging baskets, I’d say fair enough.

I agree. I would also say in the likes of Ireland and having had rain filling the reservoirs and natural waterways up until the 11th of July non stop, the onus is not on the householder but on the infrastructure.

daisychain01 · 17/07/2022 21:18

You must really dislike your parents to pick on one thing and brand them selfish. Shabby.

People dont seem to realise how many thousands of litres of water are used by sprinklers and hoses. We have a large garden,6 water butts, most empty. We have a pond with fish, that needs topping up, it evaporates badly. I have never watered grass. Our garden is our "thing" it's what we spend our money on, we have rhododendrons that are 30 years old have moved with us several times, they need have rain water, its being saved for them. If we run out, they will have tap water. In hosepipe bans, I cut our showers down to twice a week, keep the plug in and scoop the water out for the garden. It's perfectly fine to use grey water on the garden. The veg doesn't need much watering, only the stuff in pots.

No more selfish than the bloody plastic pool and lazy spa brigade. My garden is getting watered with the water I pay for.

banhmi · 17/07/2022 21:25

When the water butt runs out, try using grey water. I've been using minimal bubble bath in my kids' bath recently, leaving it to completely cool then filling a few watering cans and using them to water the pots and other thirsty plants in the garden. Involves a bit of effort but it's quite satisfying. Plus RHS says no issue at all as long as you're not watering edible crops: www.rhs.org.uk/science/gardening-in-a-changing-world/water-use-in-gardens/using-grey-water

You must be stirring with that remark. It's so ridiculous, no-one could write it seriously.

Ageist twaddle.

I agree. I don’t think it’s her baby boomers filling huge puddling pools and running the hose along plastic slides.

Herejustforthisone · 17/07/2022 21:38

It's understandable that some people say 'like fuck will I let my plants die, when the water company can't be fucked to fix the issues that piss away 100s of millions of gallons of water a year.'

yep.

Namerchangerextraordinaire · 17/07/2022 21:42

I have bees & butterflies in my garden as well as small birds.
We've recently seen the return of hedgehogs too.
I'll be watering the plants they live on if they need it & filling up the birdbath - it holds maybe a cup of water.

I never water my lawns, but the important things will be watered.

I'm not filling up a newly purchase swimming pool because it's going to be hot, which would be selfish.

I don't think what I'm doing is selfish.

Thats climate change all over really isn't it. Industry causing 90% of the problems but lest put the blame & guilt on Brenda because her flowers make her happy, Ken because he has the audacity to drive to work and Anna because she wants to go to another country on holiday once every other year.

This.

So those filling paddling pools, having water fights etc are what then

I can guarantee you they won't be baby boomers

It’s not selfish, and I’d have more birdbaths if I were you.

thegcatsmother · 17/07/2022 21:57

I use a hosepipe to fill my watering can as it's easier for me, but use the watering can to water the plants.
