My Parents are a bit selfish don't you think?

My Parents live in an area where the water companies have set messages to everyone telling them not to use hosepipes over the coming days due to the extreme heat. When I spoke to my parents earlier they said they are still going to use the hosepipe as they pay a lot of money for water usage and if they are not going to receive a discount for being told not to use water they are going to carry on using it as they like to water their garden most days during the Summer.

Are they Brexiteers, just out of curiosity

Keep arguing they are right? Ignore the majority for their own wants? Insist they have a right regardless of any other opinions? Not a Brexiteer!

Fingeronthebutton · 17/07/2022 19:42

The time will come ( with the technology we have now) when each household will be allowed a certain amount of water. When you’ve had your months quotas you will be turned off.

Not considering the younger generation in your decision making?

Funnily enough not everything has to do with Brexit. Strange concept to the obsessed, I know.

If plants and wildlife die, please explain how that is 'considering the younger generation'

FeliciaFancybottom · 17/07/2022 19:43

And yet so many people were actively encouraging filling up pools for kids to play in the other day 🤔

Eeksteek · 17/07/2022 19:44

I wouldn’t let plants die and I’d keep the kid’s pool. Neither of those are wasting water. I wouldn’t wash the car or clean the windows, that can’t wait until it’s not peak demand.

I have two large waterbutts. (I need a third).

I have enough water to last me to Tuesday nights thunderstorms.

Genuinely, there shouldnt be a need for a hosepipe if you plan carefully and conserve water.

that depends on the size of your garden. I have got 7 waterbutts and still can't collect enough water to keep my garden growing. I only water what is actually wilting and the lawn gets none.

Well I guess they are 'considering the younger generation' so get a free pass.

That tedious old bag of bollocks again 🙄. Pretty offensive. And lazy. Although I didn’t see it coming on a hosepipe thread.

I have a small garden, perfect for watering from a water butt. Except I can't have a water butt because there is nowhere to put one that would actually fill with water.

theemmadilemma · 17/07/2022 19:47

We've not been told not too, I'm keeping some plants alive. Hopefully they will help given the huge loss of clover on the lawn that should usually be full of bees, but is dead due to the lack of rain....

This. ^ One of my neighbours has around 50 sunflowers that she has been growing and nurturing since mid March. They are essential for the bees and butterflies, but especially the bees, they get great nourishment from the sunflowers. She said no way in hell is she going to let them die, and she has been watering them every evening. It's all right saying 'fuck the plants' but the insects need them. Along with many other flowers, not just the 'wild ones.'

@MilkTwoSugarsThanks

That's climate change all over really isn't it. Industry causing 90% of the problems but lest put the blame & guilt on Brenda because her flowers make her happy, Ken because he has the audacity to drive to work and Anna because she wants to go to another country on holiday once every other year.

This too. ^

All of this!

mam0918 · 17/07/2022 19:49

I live up a mountain range where (not in the town but surrounding fell areas) get outbreaks of wildfires, usually they try to do controlled burns to the heather etc... in advance but hot weather still brings small fire so to me keeping plants that are in close proximity to buildings wet in extreme heat does not seem selfish it seems logical.

I mean we have sat in the 30s for days so things are DRY and we are forcast tempratures that rival the australian and californian bush fires.

I have also never once encountered a hose pipe ban or warning why do the south seem to get them and we dont?

Is the south spectaculaly dry? if so surely the plants need MORE water.

Also unless they have 100 acre how much water would their hygrangas, pansies and pampas bush require? its hardly going to massively tip the balance a bath or shower likely takes more water, maybe those that wash their hair daily should be warned they are selfish lol.

Gastonia · 17/07/2022 19:51

We are a two-person household with 2 student children here in the holidays. We use water carefully, only shower every other day, wear clothes until they are dirty, have water butts, and save clean water from washing vegetables etc. We received our metered bill today - it said we use the equivalent of a one-person household.

I also water my garden (mainly the vegetables), although only occasionally with a hosepipe. You might be able to see people watering, but what about those who use a lot of water because of other reasons?

cheekychatta · 17/07/2022 19:52

No if it's going to rain in their area in the next few days

Shade17 · 17/07/2022 19:52

My water supplier loses 90 litres per household each day through leakage and makes pre-tax profits of approx £300M. They can fuck right off if they think I’m going out of my way to save water, they’re clearly not that bothered about it!

OooErr · 17/07/2022 19:52

Remember about 10+ years ago when there was a hot spell and people were warned to save water in London?
The public pulled together and managed to reduce usage by a staggering 30% (lots when you consider how many people).

What was their reward?

An increase in water rates because Thames’ Water’s profits went down!

Bigmouthshouthotair · 17/07/2022 19:53

cheekychatta · 17/07/2022 19:52

No if it's going to rain in their area in the next few days

No rain forecast here until next Sat and then only a 12-25% chance

jc12689 · 17/07/2022 19:54

Let them at it. Water companies are releasing sewage into UK’s coastline while charging a fortune for water usage. They are making huge profits and not maintaining the infrastructure.

this. Much easier to demonize the general public for using the water they pay for than blaming the water companies for letting the infrastructure go to shit. There is no shortage of rain or water in this country, the problem is a massive amount of it leaks out of pipes.

Blame the water companies. Blame the government for privatising all the essential utilities. Don't blame some pensioner watering their roses.

MargaretThursday · 17/07/2022 19:55

My parents have one. They've had one more often than not in the last 20 years. They're up north.

HerRoyalNotness · 17/07/2022 19:56

girlmom21 · 17/07/2022 18:54

What's the actual reasoning in the request? "Don't use hosepipes because it's hot" doesn't make sense. "Don't use hosepipes because there could very easily be a water shortage" makes a lot more sense and would make them selfish.

Yes this ^^. Is there risk of a drought happening? There is where I am as we’ve had very little rain for months. That I can understand.

TroysMammy · 17/07/2022 19:57

I hope we don't get a hosepipe ban as I'm growing vegetables but I do have 3 water butts which should suffice over a short period. I wouldn't use my hosepipe if I only had a lawn and flowers though.

SaintHelena · 17/07/2022 19:59

Tell the water company is using drones to see where people have green lawns and gardens so they can prosecute 😂

easyday · 17/07/2022 20:03

Ha a waterbutt would have run dry by now!
But just a bit of googling folks and Yorkshire Water says they have more than the usual reserves this summer (and are working around the clock to fix leaks) and Thames Water has no plans to restrict supply (via bans) this summer. Some more southern regions may, though so far this has just been a request.
So being mindful is good, but trust that the water boards know what they are doing.

Campervangirl · 17/07/2022 20:06

I can see their point but everyone should adhere to the rules.
It won't help now but could they get a water butt that attaches to the downpipe and catches the rain water?
My mum had one as she was on a water meter, it was reasonably cheap and easy to fit

Iliveonahill · 17/07/2022 20:06

In two weeks time it will be raining and we will be back to normal. I have no time for the water companies. Massive profits over the years. I’m on a meter. I pay for what I use. People round here have jacuzzis that they have to fill up. In wealthy areas there are outdoor pools. Stately homes continue to water their gardens. But the poor regular person is made to feel guilty for watering their garden.
