HMO had two people who constantly drink

I live in a not so great area of town but the streets around me are generally ok.

The house two doors down (about 20 metres away) is a HMO (house of multiple occupants, single rooms let to adults).

it used to be young professionals etc, but recently it’s had two people who are 30/40s and just spend their days drinking at the front of the house.

if I leave the house they are looking in my direction. It’s a six bedroom house - no one decent will want to live with them, so it’s going to become a doss house full of other people like them. They have a back garden. The street is full of children and in my opinion I don’t want them to see this.

the two people sit on the wall adjoining the other house, I would hate to live next to them.

AIBU for thinking that it’s acceptable behaviour and should I call the property manager?

You can't stop people drinking on their own property!

RedWingBoots · 17/07/2022 17:14

If the drunks aren't fighting each other and otherwise causing a nuisance then they are actually a great advert to the children on why drinking is a waste of time.

HuntingoftheSnark · 17/07/2022 17:15

I don't think that you can prevent people from looking in the direction of your house or from drinking on their own property. What do you want to happen to them?

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 17/07/2022 17:19

What are you going to call and say? You don’t like to see folks drinking outside? It lowers the tone? This isn’t illegal op, and it’s up to the parents to decide what their kids see, not you.

report if you want but unless they are being disorderly then they are technically not doing anything wrong.

AbreathofFrenchair · 17/07/2022 17:19

Why are people so uptight about others using their front gardens?

I'm assuming their house has a front garden, in which case they are allowed to use it. As long as they aren't disrupting others with loud music, fighting shouting and swearing and being overly loud, then you can't really do anything.

Is it their children playing in the street?

And what do you think will happen if children see them drinking? It's hardly going to influence them to take their pocket money to the Outdoor is it?!

They are sitting on the brick fence of the front garden, with Tins.

I leave my house to go shopping - they are looking in my direction. it makes me feel uncomfortable.

Are they loud? Do they cause problems? Or are they just sat having a tin on their front garden wall? For you to notice them looking at you are you also looking at them?

Me looking at them? Yes it quite normal to drive down my street and look for dangers. That also includes when I’m crossing the road and exiting my house etc.

So the two behaviours that you object to are 1) looking in your direction when you are outside your home, in a public space, and 2) drinking alcohol on their own property.

You don't have a leg to stand on on either count.

Odrama456 · 17/07/2022 17:41

They don’t have a tin.

They have been drinking since at least 12.40 when I left my house today. Yesterday was earlier and they were still out there at 8.30.

How do you look? Could they have a problem with your clothing, have you an unusual haircut, or are you an unusual size or shape?

If so, they may not be comfortable at you living near them.

Greenday49 · 17/07/2022 17:43

It's not how I'd choose to spend my days (well maybe sometimes Grin ) but they're not actually doing anything wrong, are they?

It’s a HMO. Not their own home, they don’t have exclusive rights to the property.

i Guess a lot of people on this site seem to like others to live in low class areas whereby it’s ok to sit outside and drink all day.

of course their darling children crossing two drunk people is of no concern or leading a bad example…..

Unless they are being aggressive there isn't much you can do. People drink more booze in the sun.

Would you be ok with your neighbour sitting outside drinking all day and looking at you when you enter or leave your property?

Good first impressions…. And we all know people drinking constantly throughout the day are model citizens and don’t cause any trouble….

Greenday49 · 17/07/2022 17:45

I'm about to go sit outside and have a glass of wine. I must be a right low life. Whatever will the neighbours think. 🙄

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 17/07/2022 17:45

But op. What have they actually done? Just because they don't own their property doesn't mean they can't have a drink in the garden. Ffs.

In your front garden? Why don’t you start at midday and continue to early evening?

Front, back... It's still their garden and it sounds like they're not causing any trouble whatsoever apart from glancing in your direction.

"low class areas" - there it is. You're a common or garden snob Grin

Are they problematically drunk - aggressive, shouty, leering, rowdy? Or are they just drinking on their own property? Because if the latter, I would expect my children to mind their own business, tbh.

It’s a HmO and yes they have less rights.

issue is now that class of resident lives there, other people won’t want to move in.

so soon I’ll have 6 people living in a House, all not working….

You ok with them approaching your children? Because only that side of the road is accessible so it’s what they see….

Have you tried saying hello?

luxxlisbon · 17/07/2022 17:48

People are allowed to use their front gardens even if you don’t like them. They aren’t actually doing anything wrong, just stop looking at them.
