To head to the coast on 40 degree days?

It looks noticeably cooler by the south coast than where we are.. but is everyone going to have same idea? Will we just end up sitting in a traffic jam? Will the roads even melt???!!! Honestly, the fear around the forthcoming heat is real (& genuinely dangerous for the vulnerable I know) but for the rest of us, will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours?! School's shut, I'm not working... what will we do all day at home? It will def be too to enjoy outside locally. DC are young teens. What are your plans??

It is up to you, OP. I have some friends who must be lizards as they can't wait for it to be nuclear hot out.
Some people love it, and some people fucking hate it. If you like the heat, and can handle it, go out and enjoy it.

We will but we only live 5 mins away and the Northumberland coast is always empty and the sea freezing.

If we lived down south no way would I risk it.

cannotfindanickname · 17/07/2022 01:32

If you live anywhere near an ice rink i recommend that. I never understand why they are empty in the Summer. It's like walking into a fridge!

WisteriaLodge · 17/07/2022 02:35

It's not going to be cooler by the coast OP, down here the forecast is to be between 38-41c (Chichester area) in the next few days....not to mention the roads down South are always gridlocked when we have hot weather so please don't add to the misery!

What Happens if roads melt?

Our drive is not tarmac but something like it?

Will car tyres melt?

Will the cars start sinking into the road?

Don't get it on your shoes as it is very difficult to get off, I trod in some melted tarmac a few weeks ago and it wouldn't come off easily, luckily they were walking trainers so lots of walking got rid of it.

The current forecast for Chichester is 33+32 on Monday and Tuesday?

Went to Broad stairs and a beach near Margate. We were there by 10am both days. Traffic was okay going, and we found parking, but on return, there were queues on the motorway. We drove past the main Margate beach and it was packed (approx midday).

A day out is the last thing on my mind. I shall be doing what sensible people do in Australia (where I used to live) on 40deg days, stay indoors with doors, windows and curtains closed.

Met office says 27 degrees on Monday where i live right on the south coast. It's just 2 days where it's going to be quite hot. If you went to Spain you'd think nothing of going to the beach in 27 degree heat.

yes but it would probably be a 2-5 minute walk/stagger from your hotel!

Not gatekeeping, I just regularly go the opposite way on the M27/M3 on sunny weekends and am astonished anyone wants to spend hours in a traffic jam!

I agree. I see Camber Sands has been packed today with queues of several miles. Surely if you got there and saw the queues you'd turn around and go somewhere else? It's bizarre. But then I thought that during covid as well when everyone was heading to the same places. For me crowds = avoid but for other people crowds seems to = must be good and worth waiting hours for. Oh well.

50mg · 17/07/2022 17:53

I'm not going anywhere. I really hope those saying it's a fuss over nothing are right, but I can see absolutle chaos on the roads. The volume of traffic alone will do it, but older cars won't cope well with heat and it will only take one or two breakdowns enroute. Plus, if it's really as bad as some people think, we just don't know how our infrastructure will cope. It seems irresponsible to me.

DogsAndGin · 17/07/2022 18:29

I would spend the day not taking risks and staying as safe as possible if I were you. The NHS is going to be at absolute breaking point this week - there will be a huge peak in hospital admissions and, sadly, deaths. Why risk adding to that burden by going on a long journey and risking road problems?

I’m dreading my short commute tomorrow - not sure how I’m going to sit in the car for 30 mins crawling home, so no air blast from opening the windows, and no air con in 38C.
