To head to the coast on 40 degree days?

twordle · 16/07/2022 17:37

It looks noticeably cooler by the south coast than where we are.. but is everyone going to have same idea? Will we just end up sitting in a traffic jam? Will the roads even melt???!!! Honestly, the fear around the forthcoming heat is real (& genuinely dangerous for the vulnerable I know) but for the rest of us, will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours?! School's shut, I'm not working... what will we do all day at home? It will def be too to enjoy outside locally. DC are young teens. What are your plans??

If I could afford it I would book into an air conditioned hotel nearby 😖

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/07/2022 18:35

Yeah… That ‘bit blowy’ day cost me £700 to repair my roof. People died in my town. Walls of houses fell down. Total overreaction from everyone though…

My school are starting mega early and finishing before the worst of the heat (parents voted for it) and I’m keeping my primary aged child off because I don’t want her getting ill from being stuffed in a mobile all day with 30 other bodies in 40° heat. My children are both going to my parents’ house to splash in a padding pool in the shade and then eat ice cream inside.

Didimum · 16/07/2022 18:36

A red warning means a threat to life for everyone - not just the vulnerable. Your ideal body temperature is 37 degrees, so when the temperature is 40, you have to actively cool your body through your behaviour and not heat it up through activity, exertion, being outside or in cars etc.

I live on the coast and it’s only forecast to be a degree or two cooler - still high amber warning and still dangerous. Kindly, we don’t want you, or any other visitors, here.

FionnulaTheCooler · 16/07/2022 18:36

I live within walking distance of a beach and even then I'm not planning on going anywhere near it in the next 3 days, it will be heaving and as others have said, no shade so unless you're actually in the sea it won't be pleasant. Furthest I'm planning on going is my back garden to peg out the washing. The cinema might have been an idea but I'm not sure if my local small cinema even has air con.

Whammyyammy · 16/07/2022 18:38

I would avoid the uk coast in a heatwave. Traffic will be horrendous, cars overheating, nowhere to park, being ripped off left right and centre, and the beach will.be crammed no thank you.

This is how I like my beach to be, last month in Florida

To head to the coast on 40 degree days?
fyn · 16/07/2022 18:39

@MrsIronfoundersson you have to book for parking at West Wittering in advance if there is a hint of sunshine! Even then you have to queue for ages to get in.

User6286509 · 16/07/2022 18:41

Everyone on the coast will have their pitchforks out, they probably are already out in Cornwall

I’m considering taking a camping chair and my iPad and setting myself up in the ‘Chilled’ aisle in Asda… it’s one of the coldest places I know.

I work in a supermarket and for once I'm actually looking forward to it! Not sure I'll want to leave 🤣.

We are staying at home. We are 10 miles from the coast but won't be leaving the house for 2 days, accept me going to work. I don't even fancy the 10 to 15 min walk to the leisure centre for my daughters swimming lesson on Monday and its only saying 34-35 degrees here.

ReneBumsWombats · 16/07/2022 17:54

You want to be outside, on sand, without shade, in 40 degrees?

Mad dogs and Mumsnetters...

The forecast is currently 39 degrees for my bit of Surrey but 30 degrees for the Sussex coast, not 40 degrees!

whynotwhatknot · 16/07/2022 18:43

weve had warnings not to use trains here (essex into london) as theyre putting on fewer due to the heat and possible fires

i wouldnt go anywhere unfirtunately have a wedding monday or wouldnt go a yard

caringcarer · 16/07/2022 18:43

Honestly I think you must be mad to get in a car when you don't need to. I'm staying in home with blinds drawn but windows open and drinking lots of iced water and eating ice cream with a cool shower mid afternoon. We are walking dogs at 6am before pavement gets too hot and maybe 10pm providing they are not too hot then. Dogs and cats have their cool pads to lie on in kitchen floor. At beach there will be no shade, sun will be overhead and even with cream on you will likely burn. When you drive home your car will be like an oven after being in sun all day. My steering wheel has been nearly too hot to hold this week. Even a dip in sea would not tempt me with weather in high 30's.

I popped into Asda today and it was a positively pleasant temperature inside. Outside felt too hot and it was only 28° so Monday is going to be hell for me.

ancientgran · 16/07/2022 18:46

I live a mile from the beach and I won't be going, well I might at about 7pm when it is quieter and getting cooler and I can admire all the litter that's been left behind.

The roads down to beaches can be narrow and the last mile can be murder, the car parks will be full and expensive, everyone will be crammed together and if the kids want a drink or an icecream be prepared to take out another mortgage.

Spanielsarepainless · 16/07/2022 18:52

We are a couple of miles from the coast but not planning on fighting our way there. Walking dogs very early and then late. It's lovely and cool in the garden shared by a huge parasol, unlimited drinks and ice cream a few feet away.

SweetSakura · 16/07/2022 18:55

The roads will be awful. Even if you don't burn at the beach you will be stuck in interminable traffic jams in both directions.

tedgran · 16/07/2022 18:55

Last time we went to Lyme Regis every single car park was full. I had to drive about a mile out to find a space. The walk back to the car up a steep hill wasn't fun. I'm sure lots of people will go, I would do what others have suggested and stay at home.

ememem84 · 16/07/2022 19:00

I’m in jersey so no more than 15 mins to the beach in any direction. But it was hot today.

tomorrow we’re taking a breakfast picnic. Home by 12 noon. Lunch Naps then might take the kids rockpooling in the evening.

BMW6 · 16/07/2022 19:00

Surely the sand is going to be too hot to walk on?

bearess1978 · 16/07/2022 19:02

Its 3 at most days of extreme heat for this country! Just either stay indoors or go out and have fun. The bbc scaremonger everyone ffs 🙄

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 16/07/2022 19:03

Londonlass139 · 16/07/2022 17:46

Cinema is probably the best place to be-bloody freezing usually!

This is where I am going.

EV117 · 16/07/2022 19:04

It’s one day at home - people are making such a fuss about spending one sunny at home, I don’t get it. You’d think lockdown never occurred.

riesenrad · 16/07/2022 19:15

will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours

I don't know where you live, but it wasn't "a bit blowy for a couple of hours". And then there was another storm 48 hours later (which was actually worse in my area).

I wish people would stop being so dismissive. If you like hot weather (though I very much doubt anyone really likes it when it's close to 40 degrees and particularly when it's too hot to sleep well) fine. But you need weather warnings to get people to cancel/postpone events and be sensible.

riesenrad · 16/07/2022 19:19

MrsIronfoundersson · 16/07/2022 18:21

West Wittering has signs up saying car parks are full, no more allowed.

You'd think West Wittering was the only beach (other than Bournemouth).

Newsflash: the south coast has many many beaches and a lot of them are better than West Wittering and far less busy! But please, not on Monday or Tuesday. Use some common sense.

Thinkingblonde · 16/07/2022 19:25

I wouldn’t, it’ll be packed, no shade, probably no where to park as hundred of others will have had the same idea, if it’s even a tiny bit breezy you’ll get burned even if you find shade, the reflection of the sun off the sea and the wind = wind burn.
I live a mile away from the beach, there is no way I’m going anywhere near it. It’ll be mad busy. So we’re staying in.
